1. Product description

Heat-seal coatings that let a web bond to itself or to a second surface when heat, pressure and dwell are applied at the jaws, removing the need for a separate sealant film in many lidding and sachet formats. Each grade is matched to the surface it seals to and anchors to the face it is coated on.

2. Features

  • Seals to itself or to a matched second surface under heat, pressure and dwell
  • Grades differ by seal partner, such as PET, polypropylene film or coated board
  • Anchors to print and to lacquered foil on the coated face
  • Seal strength and hot tack qualified on the finished structure

3. Recommended uses

Lidding and sachet formats and other packs where a coated seal layer replaces a separate sealant film.

4. Typical properties

PropertyTypical valueMethod
TechnologyThermoplastic heat-seal coating, binder selected for the seal partner, solvent-borne or water-basedFormulation
AppearanceClear to hazy liquid, drying to a clear to translucent filmvisual
CarrierOrganic solvent blend or water, stated for the grade supplied and matched to the ink systemformulation
Non-volatile content20 to 45 per cent by weightISO 3251
Supply viscosity, ISO flow cup 4 mm at 23 degrees Celsius30 to 60 s as suppliedISO 2431
Seal strengthConfirmed on the finished structure at the customer's jaw conditions; not published as a single catalogue valueASTM F88 on seals made on the packing line; laboratory seal curves prepared to ASTM F2029
Hot tackConfirmed where the pack is filled before the seal has cooledASTM F1921
BlockingBlocking point above the reel and warehouse storage temperature; no blocking in the reel or stackASTM D1146 for the coated layer; ASTM D3354 for blocking load on film
Pick-off at the jawNo coating transferred to the sealing jaw at the converter's conditionscustomer or supplier protocol

Typical values, not a specification. Values for each batch are given on its Certificate of Analysis.

5. Application

ParameterGuidance
Application methodGravure or roller coating, preferably on a separate coater for heavier films
Surface preparationClean, dry coated face; anchorage to the print, lacquer or film beneath is confirmed before the run
DilutionSupplied at or near application strength; reduce only with the diluent specified by Arctic for the grade, check flow time to ISO 2431 at fixed intervals recorded against temperature, and confirm any correction against a measured coat weight
Applied dry coat weight3 to 8 g/m2, set against the seal partner and format
DryingDryer air temperature, air volume and dwell set for the carrier, coat weight and substrate: typically 50 to 80 degrees Celsius on heat-sensitive polyolefin films, and higher on PET, aluminium foil, paper and board, which tolerate hotter air; water-based grades need more drying energy and dwell than solvent-borne grades at the same coat weight. The web leaves dry, free of retained solvent and cooled below the blocking temperature of the coating before rewind
Sealing conditionsJaw temperature, dwell and pressure set by the converter from a matrix run on the packing machine

6. Storage and handling

Store in the original containers, kept closed, in a cool, dry, covered area away from direct sunlight and sources of heat, within the temperature range given on the label, and protect water-based grades from frost. Shelf life is stated on the label and on the Certificate of Analysis. Handle and use the product in line with its Safety Data Sheet.

7. Safety and regulatory information

Read the Safety Data Sheet before use. Safety Data Sheets and regulatory declarations are issued by our technical centre against the product and batch supplied, so they are sent on request rather than published. Request a Safety Data Sheet or declaration.

This Technical Data Sheet is published for on-screen reference. The information is given in good faith from laboratory and application experience and describes typical values; it is not a specification and does not replace a trial on your own substrate and line.
