1. Product description
The standard slip coating of the range, holding the surface friction of a printed or overprinted web in the middle of the working range. The web feeds, forms and seals cleanly while the finished pack keeps its stability in stacking and transport.
2. Features
- Friction held in the middle window for feeding, forming and pack stability
- Runs in line on flexo and gravure presses over inks and varnishes
- For BOPP, PET and PE films and paper-based substrates
- Kept clear of glue flaps, seal panels and areas to be laminated or overprinted
- Friction confirmed on aged, conditioned samples of the couple the machine presents
3. Recommended uses
Printed film and paper packs run on form, fill and seal, wrapping and cartoning lines, where the web has to feed and form cleanly and the finished packs must stack and travel without sliding.
4. Typical properties
| Property | Typical value | Method |
|---|---|---|
| Technology | Clear slip coating with wax-type additives, solvent-borne or water-based | Formulation |
| Appearance | Clear to slightly hazy liquid, drying to a clear film | visual |
| Carrier | Organic solvent blend or water, stated for the grade supplied and matched to the ink system | formulation |
| Non-volatile content | 10 to 30 per cent by weight | ISO 3251 |
| Supply viscosity, ISO flow cup 3 mm at 23 degrees Celsius | 50 to 100 s as supplied | ISO 2431 |
| Density at 23 degrees Celsius | 0.90 to 1.10 g/cm3, depending on carrier | ISO 2811-1 |
| Coefficient of friction, static and kinetic | Middle of the working range; target range agreed with the converter for the stated couple and confirmed on the finished print or laminate, not published as a single catalogue value | ASTM D1894 on film; on paper and board, TAPPI T 815 for the static value and customer or supplier protocol for the kinetic value |
| Friction after ageing | Checked on retained samples after the agreed storage time and conditioning, since slip additives migrate with time and temperature | ASTM D1894 on film; on paper and board, TAPPI T 815 for the static value and customer or supplier protocol for the kinetic value |
Typical values, not a specification. Values for each batch are given on its Certificate of Analysis.
5. Application
| Parameter | Guidance |
|---|---|
| Application method | Gravure coating cylinder for full-web coating at consistent weight, or flexo coating station; inline over clean film |
| Surface preparation | Ink and varnish fully dried; keep glue flaps, seal panels and areas to be laminated or overprinted uncoated |
| Dilution | Supplied at or near application strength; reduce only with the diluent specified by Arctic for the grade, check flow time to ISO 2431 at fixed intervals recorded against temperature, and confirm any correction against a measured coat weight |
| Applied dry coat weight | 0.5 to 1.5 g/m2, held even across the web, since coat weight drift moves friction |
| Drying | Dryer air typically 50 to 80 degrees Celsius, limited by the heat tolerance of the substrate, set so the web leaves dry, free of retained solvent and cool at the rewind; water-based grades need more drying energy and dwell than solvent-borne grades at the same coat weight. Under-dried coating moves friction away from the level seen at the press |
| Reel handling | Controlled wind tension, cooled reels and conditioned storage; friction is measured on aged samples before the specification is fixed |
6. Storage and handling
Store in the original containers, kept closed, in a cool, dry, covered area away from direct sunlight and sources of heat, within the temperature range given on the label, and protect water-based grades from frost. Shelf life is stated on the label and on the Certificate of Analysis. Handle and use the product in line with its Safety Data Sheet.
7. Safety and regulatory information
Read the Safety Data Sheet before use. Safety Data Sheets and regulatory declarations are issued by our technical centre against the product and batch supplied, so they are sent on request rather than published. Request a Safety Data Sheet or declaration.
This Technical Data Sheet is published for on-screen reference. The information is given in good faith from laboratory and application experience and describes typical values; it is not a specification and does not replace a trial on your own substrate and line.
