1. Product description
Peelable coatings that let a seal open by controlled failure at a chosen point, either at the interface with the sealing surface or within the coating layer, rather than by tearing the web, delaminating the structure or picking fibre from board.
2. Features
- Controlled opening at the interface or within the coating layer
- Peel balanced against seal integrity through filling, distribution and storage
- Opens at a force a consumer can apply
- Qualified against the specific tray or film and the seal conditions of the line
3. Recommended uses
Lidding for trays and pots, and flow-wrap that has to be opened by hand.
4. Typical properties
| Property | Typical value | Method |
|---|---|---|
| Technology | Peelable heat-seal coating, thermoplastic blend formulated for controlled seal failure, solvent-borne or water-based | Formulation |
| Appearance | Clear to hazy liquid, drying to a clear to translucent film | visual |
| Carrier | Organic solvent blend or water, stated for the grade supplied and matched to the ink system | formulation |
| Non-volatile content | 20 to 45 per cent by weight | ISO 3251 |
| Supply viscosity, ISO flow cup 4 mm at 23 degrees Celsius | 30 to 60 s as supplied | ISO 2431 |
| Peel force | Defined peel range agreed with the brand owner and confirmed on the finished structure; not published as a single catalogue value | ASTM F88 |
| Failure mode | Interfacial or cohesive peel as specified, without tearing, delamination or fibre pick | visual examination of ASTM F88 specimens |
| Seal integrity | Confirmed after filling, distribution and storage conditions | ASTM F2096 for gross leaks and ASTM F1140 for burst or creep resistance, on packs taken after filling, distribution and storage; or customer or supplier protocol |
| Blocking | Blocking point above the reel and warehouse storage temperature; no blocking in the reel or stack | ASTM D1146 for the coated layer; ASTM D3354 for blocking load on film, customer or supplier protocol on foil or board |
Typical values, not a specification. Values for each batch are given on its Certificate of Analysis.
5. Application
| Parameter | Guidance |
|---|---|
| Application method | Gravure or roller coating, preferably on a separate coater |
| Surface preparation | Clean, dry coated face; anchorage to the web beneath confirmed before the run |
| Dilution | Supplied at or near application strength; reduce only with the diluent specified by Arctic for the grade, check flow time to ISO 2431 at fixed intervals recorded against temperature, and confirm any correction against a measured coat weight |
| Applied dry coat weight | 3 to 8 g/m2, set against the tray or film partner |
| Drying | Dryer air temperature, air volume and dwell set for the carrier, coat weight and substrate: typically 50 to 80 degrees Celsius on heat-sensitive polyolefin films, and higher on PET, aluminium foil, paper and board, which tolerate hotter air; water-based grades need more drying energy and dwell than solvent-borne grades at the same coat weight. The web leaves dry, free of retained solvent and cooled below the blocking temperature of the coating before rewind |
| Sealing conditions | Jaw temperature, dwell and pressure set by the converter from a matrix run against the specific tray or film |
6. Storage and handling
Store in the original containers, kept closed, in a cool, dry, covered area away from direct sunlight and sources of heat, within the temperature range given on the label, and protect water-based grades from frost. Shelf life is stated on the label and on the Certificate of Analysis. Handle and use the product in line with its Safety Data Sheet.
7. Safety and regulatory information
Read the Safety Data Sheet before use. Safety Data Sheets and regulatory declarations are issued by our technical centre against the product and batch supplied, so they are sent on request rather than published. Request a Safety Data Sheet or declaration.
This Technical Data Sheet is published for on-screen reference. The information is given in good faith from laboratory and application experience and describes typical values; it is not a specification and does not replace a trial on your own substrate and line.
