1. Product description

An oil and grease-resistant coating laid over the print so that oil from filling spillage, handling and case transit does not readily wet or penetrate the printed face. It is used on BOPP, PET and paper-based structures for fried snacks, nuts, bakery and ready meals.

2. Features

  • Surface that oil does not readily wet or penetrate
  • Protects the printed face from darkening, ink lift and translucent staining
  • For BOPP, PET and paper-based structures
  • On paper the result depends heavily on the base sheet
  • External coating only; does not control oil migrating from the product side

3. Recommended uses

External printed face of packs for fried snacks, nuts, bakery products and ready meals, where oil reaches the outside of the pack through filling spillage, handling and case transit.

Adhesion over ink on filmNo coating or ink removed in the tape test on the printed filmASTM F2252

Typical values, not a specification. Values for each batch are given on its Certificate of Analysis.

5. Application

ParameterGuidance
Application methodFlexo or gravure coating station, or a separate coater for heavier films on paper
Surface preparationInk fully dried. On paper, the base sheet is qualified first, since an open or poorly formed sheet will wick oil whatever sits on top
DilutionSupplied at or near application strength; reduce only with the diluent specified by Arctic for the grade, check flow time to ISO 2431 at fixed intervals recorded against temperature, and confirm any correction against a measured coat weight
Applied dry coat weight1.5 to 3.0 g/m2 on film; 3 to 6 g/m2 on paper and board
DryingDryer air temperature, air volume and dwell set for the carrier, coat weight and substrate: typically 50 to 80 degrees Celsius on heat-sensitive polyolefin films, and higher on PET, aluminium foil, paper and board, which tolerate hotter air; water-based grades need more drying energy and dwell than solvent-borne grades at the same coat weight. The web leaves dry, free of retained solvent and cooled below the blocking temperature of the coating before rewind
Next stepQualify the coated sheet or film on the finished structure with the actual product before release

6. Storage and handling

Store in the original containers, kept closed, in a cool, dry, covered area away from direct sunlight and sources of heat, within the temperature range given on the label, and protect water-based grades from frost. Shelf life is stated on the label and on the Certificate of Analysis. Handle and use the product in line with its Safety Data Sheet.

7. Safety and regulatory information

Read the Safety Data Sheet before use. Safety Data Sheets and regulatory declarations are issued by our technical centre against the product and batch supplied, so they are sent on request rather than published. Request a Safety Data Sheet or declaration.

This Technical Data Sheet is published for on-screen reference. The information is given in good faith from laboratory and application experience and describes typical values; it is not a specification and does not replace a trial on your own substrate and line.
