1. Product description

A heat-resistant coating for print that passes under a sealing jaw, through a shrink tunnel or over a hot roller. It gives the jaw a harder, more thermally stable surface so the ink does not soften, pick off or transfer to hot metal.

2. Features

  • Stops ink softening, pick-off and transfer to hot tooling
  • Keeps sealing jaws clean through a long run
  • Matched to the ink system, the substrate and the dwell and pressure at the jaw
  • Fully dried, and on cross-linking grades fully cured, before the web meets heat

3. Recommended uses

Printed flow-wrap, sachet, pouch and sleeve work that runs under heat-seal jaws, through shrink tunnels or over hot rollers.

4. Typical properties

PropertyTypical valueMethod
TechnologyClear heat-resistant overprint coating on a thermally stable binder, single-component or cross-linking, solvent-borne or water-basedFormulation
AppearanceClear liquid, drying to a clear, hard filmvisual
CarrierOrganic solvent blend or water, stated for the grade supplied and matched to the ink systemformulation
Non-volatile content20 to 40 per cent by weightISO 3251
Supply viscosity, ISO flow cup 4 mm at 23 degrees Celsius30 to 50 s as suppliedISO 2431
Heat resistance of the printed faceNo softening, pick-off or transfer to the jaw at the converter's sealing temperature, dwell and pressure; tested at or just above the production jaw temperature, typically 120 to 160 degrees Celsius on BOPP and PE structures and up to 200 degrees Celsius on PET and foil structurescustomer or supplier protocol, printed face against a hot jaw on a laboratory heat sealer
Retained solventMeasured on the finished reel against a limit agreed with the convertercustomer or supplier protocol, headspace gas chromatography
Rub resistanceStroke count and load agreed per pack; tested on the intended substrate after drying and conditioningASTM D5264
Adhesion over ink on filmNo coating or ink removed in the tape test on the printed filmASTM F2252

Typical values, not a specification. Values for each batch are given on its Certificate of Analysis.

5. Application

ParameterGuidance
Application methodFlexo or gravure coating station, inline or offline
Surface preparationInk fully dried before coating. On polyolefin film, check wetting tension on the reel to be coated with the test solutions of ASTM D2578. Trial over the printed areas, not on the unprinted edge of the web
DilutionSupplied at or near application strength; reduce only with the diluent specified by Arctic for the grade, check flow time to ISO 2431 at fixed intervals recorded against temperature, and confirm any correction against a measured coat weight
Applied dry coat weight1.0 to 2.5 g/m2
Drying and cureDryer air typically 50 to 80 degrees Celsius, limited by the heat tolerance of the substrate, set so the web leaves dry, free of retained solvent and cool at the rewind; water-based grades need more drying energy and dwell than solvent-borne grades at the same coat weight. Cross-linking grades are allowed their full cure before the web meets heat
Next stepConfirm on the packing line at the actual jaw temperature, dwell and pressure before release; on shrink sleeves, confirm that the coating follows the film through the shrink tunnel at the design shrink ratio without cracking, whitening or loss of adhesion

6. Storage and handling

Store in the original containers, kept closed, in a cool, dry, covered area away from direct sunlight and sources of heat, within the temperature range given on the label, and protect water-based grades from frost. Shelf life is stated on the label and on the Certificate of Analysis. Handle and use the product in line with its Safety Data Sheet.

7. Safety and regulatory information

Read the Safety Data Sheet before use. Safety Data Sheets and regulatory declarations are issued by our technical centre against the product and batch supplied, so they are sent on request rather than published. Request a Safety Data Sheet or declaration.

This Technical Data Sheet is published for on-screen reference. The information is given in good faith from laboratory and application experience and describes typical values; it is not a specification and does not replace a trial on your own substrate and line.
