Arcrefin PR 230 Two-Component Epoxy Primer

A two-component epoxy primer cured with an amine-functional hardener, used as the foundation coat on bare and mixed metal repairs. It carries the corrosion duty of the refinish system and takes the place of a separate one-component wash or etch primer.

1. Product description

A two-component epoxy primer cured with an amine-functional hardener, used as the foundation coat on bare and mixed metal repairs. It takes the place of a separate one-component wash or etch primer: the epoxy binder wets and protects bare metal without free acid, so it can be applied where cured polyester filler and bare metal meet on the same panel, and it can be sanded or overcoated wet-on-wet, where a wash primer is too thin to sand and has to be overcoated inside a fixed window. It carries the corrosion duty of the system, so it is the grade specified where a repair exposes bare steel, abraded aluminium and galvanised sheet together.

2. Features

  • Adheres to bare steel, galvanised sheet and abraded aluminium in the same repair
  • No free acid, so it can span bare metal and cured polyester filler on one panel
  • Sanded after cure, or overcoated wet-on-wet inside the stated window
  • Cured with its own amine-functional hardener, not with the Arcrefin AN 220 range
  • 25 to 40 µm dry in two coats

3. Recommended uses

Bare and mixed metal repairs where a repair exposes cold-rolled steel, galvanised sheet and aluminium together, including panels where cured, sanded polyester filler and bare metal meet. It is applied over the metal and the filler together and is the base for Arcrefin PS 450 surfacer or Arcrefin PS 220 sealer.

Substrates. Bare and abraded cold-rolled steel, electro-galvanised and hot-dip galvanised sheet, abraded aluminium and aluminium alloy panels, cured and sanded polyester filler, and sound aged paint feathered back at the repair edge.

5. Application

ParameterGuidance
Surface preparationDegrease, abrade bare metal to clean sound substrate, feather the aged paint edge back, degrease again and dry
Mixing and reductionMix by volume with the matched amine-functional epoxy hardener, then reduce to spray viscosity as stated on the label
MethodGravity-feed spray gun, 1.4 to 1.6 mm fluid tip, two coats
Applied film25 to 40 µm dry over two coats, with 10 min flash between coats at 20 °C
DryingOvercoat wet-on-wet inside the stated window, or dry 4 to 6 h at 20 °C or 30 to 40 min at 60 °C metal temperature
Next stepSand the cured primer and apply Arcrefin PS 450 surfacer, or apply Arcrefin PS 220 sealer over the cured primer; polyester filler is applied, cured and sanded before this primer

Process. Mix by volume with the matched epoxy hardener and reduce to spray viscosity. Apply two coats by gravity gun with a 1.4 to 1.6 mm tip to 25 to 40 µm dry, flashing 10 min between coats at 20 °C. Overcoat wet-on-wet inside the stated window, or allow 4 to 6 h at 20 °C, or 30 min at 60 °C metal temperature, and sand before surfacer.

6. Storage and handling

Store base and hardener in their original, tightly closed containers in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight and away from heat. Shelf life is stated on the label and Certificate of Analysis. Handle and use the product in line with its Safety Data Sheet.

7. Safety and regulatory information

Read the Safety Data Sheet before use. Safety Data Sheets and regulatory declarations are issued by our technical centre against the product and batch supplied, so they are sent on request rather than published. Request a Safety Data Sheet or declaration.
