Arcwood EX 210 Microporous Exterior Basecoat
A penetrating, vapour-permeable basecoat for external joinery, supplied translucent and opaque, designed to wet into the timber rather than sit on it. It is dipped or flow coated so that end grain, rebates and tenon shoulders take up coating before assembly, which is where exterior systems normally fail.

1. Product description
A penetrating, vapour-permeable basecoat for external joinery, supplied translucent and opaque, designed to wet into the timber rather than sit on it. It is applied by dipping or flow coating so that end grain, rebates and tenon shoulders take up coating before assembly, which is where exterior systems normally fail. It is the penetrating member of the EX family and is always overcoated by Arcwood EX 460.
2. Features
- Wets into the timber rather than sitting on it
- Translucent and opaque versions
- Dip or flow coat before assembly to seal end grain, rebates and tenon shoulders
- Microporous system with a water vapour transmission rate of 15 to 150 g/m2 per day
- Always overcoated by Arcwood EX 460
3. Recommended uses
Basecoat for window frames and sashes, external doors, cladding and garden furniture in solid timber, and for sealing tenon ends, sill undersides, drainage cut-outs and site-made cuts.
Substrates. Exterior solid timber joinery, window frames and sashes, external doors, cladding and garden furniture, at the moisture content stated in the specification table.
4. Typical properties
| Property | Typical value | Method |
|---|---|---|
| Technology | Penetrating microporous exterior wood basecoat | Formulation |
| Appearance | Translucent or opaque; penetrates the timber surface | Visual |
| Dry film thickness per coat | 20 to 30 microns | ISO 2808 |
| Dry film thickness, complete system with Arcwood EX 460 | 100 to 150 microns | ISO 2808 |
| Water vapour transmission rate, complete system | 15 to 150 g/m2 per day, medium permeability class | EN ISO 7783 |
| Timber moisture content at application | 12 to 15 per cent | EN 13183-2, electrical resistance method |
| Drying before de-nibbing at 30 degrees C | 4 to 6 hours | customer or supplier protocol |
Typical values, not a specification. Values for each batch are given on its Certificate of Analysis.
5. Application
| Parameter | Guidance |
|---|---|
| Application method | Dip, flow coat or brush |
| Surface preparation | Timber at 12 to 15 per cent moisture content measured to EN 13183-2, sanded with the grain to 120 to 180 grit and free of dust. Finer sanding closes the surface and reduces penetration of the basecoat. |
| End grain | Seal all end grain, tenon ends, glazing rebates and machined cut-outs before assembly, and every site-made cut immediately after cutting |
| Film build | 1 to 2 coats at 20 to 30 microns dry |
| Drying and de-nibbing | Dry 4 to 6 hours, then de-nib with 240 to 320 grit |
| Conditions | Do not apply below 10 degrees C, above 80 per cent relative humidity, or when the timber surface is less than 3 degrees C above the dew point |
| Overcoat | Arcwood EX 460, within the recoat window confirmed for the grade supplied |
Process. Dip, flow coat or brush 1 to 2 coats at 20 to 30 microns dry. Seal all end grain and machined cut-outs before assembly. Dry 4 to 6 hours, de-nib with 240 to 320 grit, overcoat within the stated recoat window.
6. Storage and handling
Store in the original, tightly closed container in a cool, dry, covered area, out of direct sunlight and protected from frost and heat. Shelf life is stated on the label and Certificate of Analysis. Handle and use the product in line with its Safety Data Sheet.
7. Safety and regulatory information
Read the Safety Data Sheet before use. Safety Data Sheets and regulatory declarations are issued by our technical centre against the product and batch supplied, so they are sent on request rather than published. Request a Safety Data Sheet or declaration.
This Technical Data Sheet is published for on-screen reference. The information is given in good faith from laboratory and application experience and describes typical values; it is not a specification and does not replace a trial on your own substrate and line.
