1. Product description
The highest weathering grade in the range, for high ultraviolet, coastal and industrial atmospheres where SD 420 is not enough. It is formulated for extended gloss and colour retention on exposed facade work and is normally specified at a higher minimum film build, over an anticorrosive powder primer on aluminium in marine locations. Metallic and bonded metallic shades in this subfamily are sprayed to waste rather than reclaimed, because flake separates from the resin particles in the recovery system and is damaged in the cyclone and cartridges, so reclaim returns at a different flake to resin ratio and the shade drifts as it is fed back.
2. Features
- Extended gloss and colour retention for high ultraviolet, coastal and industrial exposure
- Specified at a higher minimum film build than SD 420
- Applied over an anticorrosive powder primer on aluminium in marine locations
- Metallic and bonded metallic shades sprayed to waste to hold the shade
3. Recommended uses
Exposed architectural facade work on aluminium in high ultraviolet, coastal and industrial atmospheres, over a powder primer in marine locations.
Substrates. Chromate-free pretreated aluminium extrusion and sheet, with a powder primer where the exposure calls for it.
4. Typical properties
| Property | Typical value | Method |
|---|---|---|
| Technology | Thermosetting superdurable polyester powder, high-durability grade, solvent-free | Formulation |
| Appearance and finish | Fine, free-flowing powder; colour and gloss to order, including metallic and bonded metallic shades | Visual, against the agreed colour standard |
| Particle size distribution, d50 | 30 to 45 microns | ISO 8130-13, laser diffraction |
| Specific gravity | 1.2 to 1.8 g/cm3, set by pigment and filler loading | ISO 8130-2 or ISO 8130-3 |
| Gel time at 180 degrees C | 25 to 120 s | ISO 8130-6 |
| Inclined plate flow | 15 to 40 mm | ISO 8130-11 |
| Specular gloss | 5 to 95 gloss units at 60 degrees, to order; matt finishes read at 85 degrees and high gloss at 20 degrees | ISO 2813 |
| Dry film thickness | 60 to 90 microns topcoat, at the higher minimum build stated in the specification; primer build additional | ISO 2360 eddy current on aluminium |
| Adhesion | Cross-cut classification 0, no detachment, at conventional spray build; on the full primer and topcoat system, cross-cut is run with the cut spacing ISO 2409 sets for the total film thickness and assessed to customer or supplier protocol | ISO 2409 |
| Accelerated weathering, gloss retention | Quoted at 2000 h exposure and above, as a superdurable polyester | ISO 16474-3 fluorescent UV, or ISO 16474-2 where a xenon cycle is specified |
Typical values, not a specification. Values for each batch are given on its Certificate of Analysis.
5. Application
| Parameter | Guidance |
|---|---|
| Application method | Electrostatic corona or tribostatic spray |
| Surface preparation | Chromate-free pretreated aluminium extrusion and sheet, clean and dry |
| Primer | Anticorrosive powder primer on aluminium where the exposure calls for it, as in marine locations, gelled or part cured to its own data sheet before the topcoat is applied; the system then receives the full topcoat schedule |
| Dilution or thinner | None; applied as supplied, solvent-free |
| Dry film thickness | 60 to 90 microns topcoat, not below the minimum build stated in the specification; where a powder primer is used, its build is additional and stated separately; checked to ISO 2360 on aluminium |
| Cure schedule | 10 to 15 min at 190 to 200 degrees C object temperature, confirmed with a data-logging oven profiler; oven air temperature is not the cure figure |
| Overspray | Metallic and bonded metallic shades are sprayed to waste: flake separates from the resin in the recovery system and is damaged in the cyclone and cartridges, so reclaim would shift the shade |
Process. Electrostatic corona or tribostatic spray, 60 to 100 microns dry film over primer where specified. Typical cure 10 to 15 minutes at 190 to 200 degrees C object temperature.
6. Storage and handling
Store sealed in the original packaging in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat sources, and let cartons reach workshop temperature before opening so that condensation does not form on the powder. Shelf life is stated on the label and Certificate of Analysis. Handle and use the product in line with its Safety Data Sheet.
7. Safety and regulatory information
Read the Safety Data Sheet before use. Safety Data Sheets and regulatory declarations are issued by our technical centre against the product and batch supplied, so they are sent on request rather than published. Request a Safety Data Sheet or declaration.
This Technical Data Sheet is published for on-screen reference. The information is given in good faith from laboratory and application experience and describes typical values; it is not a specification and does not replace a trial on your own substrate and line.
