Arcdura EP 160 Functional High-Build Epoxy Powder

Higher build thermosetting epoxy powder for functional service, where the film provides corrosion protection or electrical insulation rather than decoration. It is formulated to gel and cure on a part heated before the powder reaches it, and is built to 200 to 400 microns in a single pass.

1. Product description

A higher build epoxy for functional service rather than decoration, where the film is doing corrosion or electrical insulation work. It is formulated to gel and cure on a part that has been heated before the powder reaches it, which suits reinforcing bar, valve bodies, fittings and busbar components that are induction or oven heated in line. Chemical resistance and edge coverage are higher than EP 120, and the film is built well above conventional spray thickness.

2. Features

  • Gels and cures on the retained heat of a preheated or induction-heated part
  • 200 to 400 microns dry film in a single pass
  • Higher chemical resistance and edge coverage than EP 120
  • Oven cure also possible on lighter sections
  • Adhesion assessed by pull-off at this build

3. Recommended uses

Reinforcing bar, valve bodies, fittings and busbar components that are induction or oven heated in line, where the coating does corrosion or electrical insulation work.

Substrates. Blast-cleaned steel to an agreed preparation grade to ISO 8501-1 and a stated surface profile, reinforcing bar, ductile iron and cast steel fittings.

4. Typical properties

PropertyTypical valueMethod
TechnologyThermosetting epoxy powder, short gel for heated-part application, solvent-freeFormulation
Appearance and finishFine, free-flowing powder; cures to a functional film, colour to orderVisual, against the agreed colour standard
Particle size distribution, d5030 to 45 micronsISO 8130-13, laser diffraction
Gel time at 180 degrees C25 to 40 s, at the short end of the range for heated-part applicationISO 8130-6
Inclined plate flow15 to 25 mm, at the lower end of the range for high-build gradesISO 8130-11
Dry film thickness200 to 400 microns in a single passISO 2178 magnetic method on steel and iron, ISO 2360 eddy current on non-ferrous busbar
AdhesionPull-off 5 MPa and above, depending on surface preparation; cross-cut is outside its scope at this buildISO 4624
Bend flexibilityNo cracking of the coating when bent over the mandrel set in the customer or project specification at the applied build; flexibility falls as film build risesCustomer or supplier protocol
Neutral salt spray on prepared steel500 to 1000 h, rated for rusting and blistering; surface preparation governs the resultISO 9227, rated to ISO 4628-2 for blistering and ISO 4628-3 for rusting
Electric strengthStated against the customer specification at the applied buildIEC 60243-1

Typical values, not a specification. Values for each batch are given on its Certificate of Analysis.

5. Application

ParameterGuidance
Application methodElectrostatic spray onto a preheated or induction-heated part
Surface preparationBlast clean to the agreed preparation grade to ISO 8501-1 and the stated surface profile; remove dust and coat before flash rusting develops. Non-ferrous busbar is prepared to customer or supplier protocol
Part temperatureSet against section, mass and line speed so that the part's retained heat gels and cures the film; confirmed by measuring object temperature
Dilution or thinnerNone; applied as supplied, solvent-free
Dry film thickness200 to 400 microns in a single pass, checked to ISO 2178 on steel and iron and ISO 2360 on non-ferrous busbar
Cure scheduleOn the part's retained heat. Where lighter sections are oven cured, 10 to 20 min at 180 to 200 degrees C object temperature, confirmed by profiling
InspectionAdhesion by pull-off to ISO 4624, not by cross-cut; film continuity to customer or supplier protocol

Process. Electrostatic spray onto a preheated or induction-heated part, 200 to 400 microns in a single pass, gelled and cured on the part’s retained heat. Oven cure is also possible on lighter sections. At this build, adhesion is assessed by pull-off, not by cross-cut.

6. Storage and handling

Store sealed in the original packaging in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat sources, and let cartons reach workshop temperature before opening so that condensation does not form on the powder. Shelf life is stated on the label and Certificate of Analysis. Handle and use the product in line with its Safety Data Sheet.

7. Safety and regulatory information

Read the Safety Data Sheet before use. Safety Data Sheets and regulatory declarations are issued by our technical centre against the product and batch supplied, so they are sent on request rather than published. Request a Safety Data Sheet or declaration.

The information is given in good faith from laboratory and application experience and describes typical values; it is not a specification and does not replace a trial on your own substrate and line.
