1. Product description

A single-component UV-curable acrylate hardcoat for transparent and decorated plastic parts on high throughput lines. It crosslinks in seconds under a mercury or LED source, so parts can be handled, inspected and packed immediately instead of occupying oven and rack space. UV 310 is the standard build grade for scratch protection over printed, metallised and pigmented surfaces.

2. Features

  • Crosslinks in seconds under UV with no bake or rack hold; solvent thinned versions need a short heated flash first
  • Photoinitiator package specified for the source in use, mercury or LED
  • Standard build of 10 to 15 microns for scratch protection
  • Applied over printed, metallised and pigmented surfaces
  • Spray, flow coat, dip or roller application

3. Recommended uses

Protective clear over printed, metallised and pigmented plastic parts and over transparent polycarbonate, PMMA, ABS, PET and PETG parts, where scratch protection is needed at line speed.

Substrates. Polycarbonate, PMMA, ABS, PET and PETG, primed polyolefin, and decorated or metallised layers needing a protective clear.

4. Typical properties

PropertyTypical valueMethod
TechnologySingle-component UV-curable acrylate, supplied solvent free or solvent thinnedFormulation
AppearanceClear liquidVisual
Non-volatile contentSolvent thinned versions 30 to 60 per cent by weight; solvent free versions carry no added solventASTM D5403, Test Method B, on solvent thinned versions; non-volatile content by difference

5. Application

ParameterGuidance
Application methodSpray, flow coat or dip; roller on flat parts
Surface preparationClean, dust free and free of release agents; polyolefin primed. On polycarbonate and ABS, solvent balance and flash are set against stress cracking
Applied film thickness10 to 15 microns
FlashSolvent thinned versions flash 3 to 5 minutes at 50 to 60 degrees C before cure, since retained solvent leaves a soft film after cure
CureUV, mercury or LED as specified for the photoinitiator package, at the UV dose and peak irradiance issued by Arctic for the grade and the source in use; a change of source is re-qualified rather than the belt speed copied across
After cureParts can be handled, inspected and packed immediately after cure

Process. Spray, flow coat or dip applied at 10 to 15 microns, or roller applied on flat parts. Solvent thinned versions flash 3 to 5 minutes at 50 to 60 degrees C before cure, since retained solvent leaves a soft film after cure. Cured under UV at the dose stated for the source in use, with belt speed set against in-line radiometry rather than by lamp hours. The photoinitiator package is specified for the source, mercury or LED, because the two do not emit the same spectrum.

6. Storage and handling

Store in the original closed, opaque containers away from sunlight and other UV sources, direct heat and frost, and keep lids closed between uses. Shelf life is stated on the label and Certificate of Analysis; refer to the Safety Data Sheet, issued on request, for handling. Handle and use the product in line with its Safety Data Sheet.

7. Safety and regulatory information

Read the Safety Data Sheet before use. Safety Data Sheets and regulatory declarations are issued by our technical centre against the product and batch supplied, so they are sent on request rather than published. Request a Safety Data Sheet or declaration.

This Technical Data Sheet is published for on-screen reference. The information is given in good faith from laboratory and application experience and describes typical values; it is not a specification and does not replace a trial on your own substrate and line.
