Arcplast GL 540 Chemical-Resistant Cosmetic Container Coating

A high crosslink density two-component coating for glass cosmetic containers that meet alkaline wash, condensation, perfume and oil contact through filling and consumer use. It is built against edge lift and blush at the shoulder and base after repeated wet and dry cycling, and is the higher build, higher resistance grade above GL 510.

1. Product description

A high crosslink density two-component coating for glass cosmetic containers that meet alkaline wash, condensation, perfume and oil contact through filling and consumer use. It is built against the failure that matters on a filled pack, which is edge lift and blush at the shoulder and base after repeated wet and dry cycling. GL 540 is the higher build, higher resistance grade above GL 510.

2. Features

  • High crosslink density for alkaline wash, perfume and oil contact
  • Built against edge lift and blush at shoulder and base under repeated wet and dry cycling
  • 25 to 40 microns dry in two passes
  • Glass cure of 30 minutes at 150 degrees C or 20 minutes at 160 degrees C
  • Low temperature cycle of 70 to 80 degrees C for plastic closures and caps decorated in the same set

3. Recommended uses

Decoration and protection of glass cosmetic jars, compacts and containers, together with the plastic closures and caps decorated in the same set, where the filled pack meets alkaline washing, condensation, perfume and oil.

Substrates. Container and flat glass, glass cosmetic jars and compacts. Heat sensitive components decorated in the same set, such as plastic closures and caps, are run on the low temperature cycle below.

5. Application

ParameterGuidance
Application methodTwo-component spray in two passes with an intercoat flash
Surface preparationCold-end coating removed from the decorated zone; glass clean and above dew point at the moment of coating
Mixing and pot lifeBase and hardener mixed at the ratio stated on the label and used inside the stated pot life; mixed material is timed and discarded at the end of pot life, not thinned and reused
Applied film thickness25 to 40 microns dry
Cure on glassFlash 10 minutes, then cure 30 minutes at 150 degrees C or 20 minutes at 160 degrees C
Cure on plastic closures and heat sensitive parts30 to 40 minutes at 70 to 80 degrees C, since 150 degrees C is above what most closure polymers survive, then held 7 days at ambient before resistance testing
Resistance testingRun on the cured pack after the ambient hold, not on parts taken straight off the oven

Process. Two-component spray at 25 to 40 microns dry in two passes with an intercoat flash. On glass, flash 10 minutes then cure 30 minutes at 150 degrees C or 20 minutes at 160 degrees C. Plastic closures and other heat sensitive parts are cured 30 to 40 minutes at 70 to 80 degrees C, since 150 degrees C is above what most closure polymers survive, and they are held 7 days at ambient before resistance testing. Resistance testing is run on the cured pack after that ambient hold, not on parts taken straight off the oven.

6. Storage and handling

Store base and hardener in the original closed containers in a cool, dry place away from direct heat, sunlight and frost, and keep the hardener tightly sealed between uses, since it reacts with atmospheric moisture. Shelf life is stated on the label and Certificate of Analysis; refer to the Safety Data Sheet, issued on request, for handling. Handle and use the product in line with its Safety Data Sheet.

7. Safety and regulatory information

Read the Safety Data Sheet before use. Safety Data Sheets and regulatory declarations are issued by our technical centre against the product and batch supplied, so they are sent on request rather than published. Request a Safety Data Sheet or declaration.

This Technical Data Sheet is published for on-screen reference. The information is given in good faith from laboratory and application experience and describes typical values; it is not a specification and does not replace a trial on your own substrate and line.
