Arcplast PR 110 Chlorinated Polyolefin Adhesion Primer
A thin-film, solvent-borne adhesion primer based on chlorinated polyolefin resin for polypropylene, TPO and filled polyolefin mouldings. It swells into the polyolefin surface and presents a polar film that conventional basecoats and topcoats can wet and bond to.

1. Product description
A thin-film, solvent-borne adhesion primer based on chlorinated polyolefin resin for polypropylene, TPO and filled polyolefin mouldings. The chlorinated polyolefin swells into the polyolefin surface and presents a polar film that conventional basecoats and topcoats can wet and bond to. PR 110 is the lower build of the pair and is used where the primer only has to solve adhesion, with colour, gloss and durability carried by the coats above it.
2. Features
- Chlorinated polyolefin adhesion route that anchors by swelling into the polyolefin surface rather than by oxidising it
- Thin film of 5 to 8 microns dry; colour, gloss and durability are carried by the coats above
- Wider process margin on flame, corona or plasma treated polyolefin; usable on untreated polyolefin with a narrower window
- Wet on wet or wet on dry routes into the basecoat
- Not intended as a standalone finish
3. Recommended uses
Adhesion primer on polypropylene, TPO, EPDM modified polyolefin and talc or glass filled PP mouldings that are to carry a decorative basecoat and topcoat or a soft-feel finish, including lines where flame, corona or plasma treatment is not available.
Substrates. Polypropylene, TPO, EPDM modified polyolefin, talc filled and glass filled PP. Flame, corona or plasma treatment is preferred and gives the widest process margin; on untreated polyolefin the primer carries the whole adhesion mechanism and the window is narrower. Not intended as a standalone finish.
4. Typical properties
| Property | Typical value | Method |
|---|---|---|
| Technology | Solvent-borne chlorinated polyolefin resin solution | Formulation |
| Appearance | Clear to slightly hazy liquid, colourless to pale yellow | Visual |
| Carrier | Organic solvent blend | Formulation |
| Non-volatile content | 5 to 15 per cent by weight, as supplied | ISO 3251 |
| Flow time at 23 degrees C | 35 to 60 s, ISO 3 mm cup | ISO 2431 |
| Density at 23 degrees C | 0.85 to 0.95 g/cm³ | ISO 2811-1 |
| Dry film thickness | 5 to 8 microns | ISO 2808 |
| Substrate wetting tension before priming, treated polyolefin | 38 mN/m minimum, checked within the validated interval after treatment | ASTM D2578, a method written for polyolefin film and used here as a wetting tension check on mouldings |
| Cross-cut adhesion | Class 0 to class 1, before and after humidity exposure, tested on the complete primer, basecoat and topcoat system | ISO 2409, 2 mm cut spacing on plastic substrates |
| Condensation water resistance | 240 to 500 h with no blistering and no adhesion loss, tested on the complete system | ISO 6270-2 |
Typical values, not a specification. Values for each batch are given on its Certificate of Analysis.
5. Application
| Parameter | Guidance |
|---|---|
| Application method | Spray, on rotating spindles or reciprocators |
| Surface preparation | Mouldings free of silicone and stearate release agents and handling contamination; flame, corona or plasma treated where the line allows, and coated within the validated interval after treatment, with parts past that interval re-treated rather than coated |
| Dilution | Adjusted only with the thinner specified by Arctic for the grade, to the spray viscosity set for the line |
| Applied film thickness | 5 to 8 microns dry, checked as dry film thickness rather than judged from wet appearance |
| Wet on wet route | Flash 5 to 10 minutes at ambient, then apply the basecoat while the primer is dry to touch but uncured; the topcoat bake completes the cure of both layers |
| Wet on dry route | Force dry 20 to 30 minutes at 60 to 70 degrees C, cool, then apply the basecoat |
| Next coat | Decorative basecoat and topcoat, or Arcplast SF 210 or SF 240 soft-feel topcoat |
Process. Spray applied at 5 to 8 microns dry. Two routes. Wet on wet: flash 5 to 10 minutes at ambient, then apply the basecoat while the primer is dry to touch but uncured, and let the topcoat bake complete the cure of both layers. Wet on dry: force dry the primer 20 to 30 minutes at 60 to 70 degrees C, cool, then basecoat. Coat within the validated interval after pre-treatment, since treatment level decays with time.
6. Storage and handling
Store in the original closed containers in a cool, dry place away from direct heat, sunlight and frost, and reclose containers after use. Shelf life is stated on the label and Certificate of Analysis; refer to the Safety Data Sheet, issued on request, for handling. Handle and use the product in line with its Safety Data Sheet.
7. Safety and regulatory information
Read the Safety Data Sheet before use. Safety Data Sheets and regulatory declarations are issued by our technical centre against the product and batch supplied, so they are sent on request rather than published. Request a Safety Data Sheet or declaration.
This Technical Data Sheet is published for on-screen reference. The information is given in good faith from laboratory and application experience and describes typical values; it is not a specification and does not replace a trial on your own substrate and line.
