Arcplast GL 510 Organic Glass Container Coating
A two-component polyurethane coating for glass bottles, jars and cosmetic containers, carrying a silane adhesion promoter that couples the organic film to the silica surface. It cures at 140 to 160 degrees C, a fraction of the temperature a ceramic frit needs, and reaches colour, matt, frost and gradient effects that are difficult or costly by firing.

1. Product description
A two-component polyurethane coating for glass bottles, jars and cosmetic containers, carrying a silane adhesion promoter that couples the organic film to the silica surface. It cures at a fraction of the temperature a ceramic frit needs and reaches colour, matt, frost and gradient effects that are difficult or costly by firing. GL 510 is the standard grade for decoration and handling protection.
2. Features
- Silane adhesion promoter couples the film to the glass surface
- Cures 20 to 30 minutes at 140 to 160 degrees C in a tunnel or box oven
- Colour, matt, frost and gradient effects
- Spindle spray on containers or curtain coat on flat glass
- Standard grade for decoration and handling protection
3. Recommended uses
Decoration and handling protection of flint, amber and green container glass, glass bottles, jars and cosmetic components, and flat glass. Packs that meet alkaline washing, perfume and oil contact and repeated wet and dry cycling are specified in Arcplast GL 540.
Substrates. Flint, amber and green container glass, flat glass and glass cosmetic components. The cold-end coating, which is the organic wax lubricant, must be removed from the decorated zone by washing or burn-off. The hot-end tin oxide layer is permanent and is allowed for in silane selection rather than removed.
4. Typical properties
| Property | Typical value | Method |
|---|---|---|
| Technology | Two-component polyurethane with silane adhesion promoter, in organic solvent | Formulation |
| Appearance | Two-component liquid; shade and effect to specification | Visual |
| Non-volatile content, mixed | 35 to 50 per cent by weight | ISO 3251 |
| Flow time at 23 degrees C, mixed and ready for spray | 30 to 55 s, ISO 4 mm cup | ISO 2431 |
| Density at 23 degrees C, mixed | 1.00 to 1.35 g/cm³, depending on shade and effect | ISO 2811-1 |
| Dry film thickness | 25 to 30 microns | ISO 2808 |
| Cure | 20 to 30 minutes at 140 to 160 degrees C glass temperature | Part temperature logged through the oven |
| Cross-cut adhesion | Class 0 to class 1, before and after humidity exposure, on glass | ISO 2409, 1 mm cut spacing on glass |
| Alkali immersion | 0.1 N sodium hydroxide, 24 h at 23 degrees C, no edge lift and no blush | ISO 2812-1 |
| Condensation water resistance | 240 to 500 h with no blistering and no adhesion loss | ISO 6270-2 |
Typical values, not a specification. Values for each batch are given on its Certificate of Analysis.
5. Application
| Parameter | Guidance |
|---|---|
| Application method | Spray on a rotating spindle for containers; curtain coat for flat work |
| Surface preparation | Cold-end coating, the organic wax lubricant, removed from the decorated zone by washing or burn-off; the hot-end tin oxide layer is permanent and is allowed for in silane selection rather than removed |
| Glass condition at coating | Clean and above dew point: condensed water disrupts wetting and film formation, while the trace moisture on a clean glass surface is what the silane needs to bond |
| Mixing and pot life | Base and hardener mixed at the ratio stated on the label and used inside the stated pot life; mixed material is timed and discarded at the end of pot life, not thinned and reused |
| Applied film thickness | 25 to 30 microns dry |
| Flash and cure | Flash 5 to 10 minutes, then cure 20 to 30 minutes at 140 to 160 degrees C in a tunnel or box oven; a decorating lehr runs at ceramic firing temperature and is not used for this grade |
| Testing after cure | Adhesion and resistance tested on the cured pack after it has cooled to ambient |
Process. Spray applied on a rotating spindle at 15 to 30 microns dry, or curtain applied on flat work. Flash 5 to 10 minutes, then cure 20 to 30 minutes at 140 to 160 degrees C in a tunnel or box oven. A decorating lehr runs at ceramic firing temperature and is not used for this grade. The glass must be clean and above dew point at the moment of coating: condensed water disrupts wetting and film formation, while the trace moisture held on a clean glass surface is what the alkoxysilane needs in order to hydrolyse and condense with the surface silanols.
6. Storage and handling
Store base and hardener in the original closed containers in a cool, dry place away from direct heat, sunlight and frost, and keep the hardener tightly sealed between uses, since it reacts with atmospheric moisture. Shelf life is stated on the label and Certificate of Analysis; refer to the Safety Data Sheet, issued on request, for handling. Handle and use the product in line with its Safety Data Sheet.
7. Safety and regulatory information
Read the Safety Data Sheet before use. Safety Data Sheets and regulatory declarations are issued by our technical centre against the product and batch supplied, so they are sent on request rather than published. Request a Safety Data Sheet or declaration.
This Technical Data Sheet is published for on-screen reference. The information is given in good faith from laboratory and application experience and describes typical values; it is not a specification and does not replace a trial on your own substrate and line.
