Arcplast PR 140 Two-Component Polyurethane Tie Coat
A two-component polyurethane primer and tie coat carrying a chlorinated polyolefin adhesion package, formulated for higher film build and for parts that see chemical contact or humid service. The isocyanate crosslink gives the primer layer its own solvent and humidity resistance instead of leaving that to the topcoat.

1. Product description
PR 140 also levels minor moulding texture and flow lines that a thin primer would telegraph.
2. Features
- Isocyanate crosslinked primer layer with its own solvent and humidity resistance
- Chlorinated polyolefin adhesion package for treated and untreated polypropylene and TPO
- One common primer across polyolefin, ABS and ABS/PC mouldings in a mixed set
- 15 to 25 microns dry, levelling minor moulding texture and flow lines
- Topcoated wet on wet into a single bake, or force dried and recoated wet on dry
3. Recommended uses
Primer and tie coat under decorative topcoats and soft-feel finishes on polyolefin and mixed plastic mouldings that meet chemical contact or humid service, or where moulding texture and flow lines would telegraph through a thin primer.
Substrates. Treated and untreated polypropylene and TPO, polyolefin blends, ABS and ABS/PC where one common primer is wanted across a mixed set of mouldings.
4. Typical properties
| Property | Typical value | Method |
|---|---|---|
| Technology | Two-component polyurethane, polyol base with isocyanate hardener, carrying a chlorinated polyolefin adhesion package, in organic solvent | Formulation |
| Appearance | Two-component liquid, base and isocyanate hardener; shade to specification | Visual |
| Non-volatile content, mixed | 40 to 55 per cent by weight | ISO 3251 |
| Flow time at 23 degrees C, mixed and ready for spray | 30 to 55 s, ISO 4 mm cup | ISO 2431 |
| Density at 23 degrees C, mixed | 1.00 to 1.30 g/cm³, depending on shade | ISO 2811-1 |
| Dry film thickness, tie coat build | 15 to 25 microns, in one or two passes, applied direct to the substrate; a higher build than the 5 to 8 micron thin adhesion primer | ISO 2808 |
| Substrate wetting tension before priming, treated polyolefin | 38 mN/m minimum, checked within the validated interval after treatment | ASTM D2578, a method written for polyolefin film and used here as a wetting tension check on mouldings |
| Cross-cut adhesion | Class 0 to class 1, before and after humidity exposure, on treated and untreated polyolefin | ISO 2409, 2 mm cut spacing on plastic substrates |
| Condensation water resistance | 240 to 500 h with no blistering and no adhesion loss, tested on the complete system | ISO 6270-2 |
| Impact resistance, falling weight | No cracking or detachment at the drop height agreed for the substrate and film build | ISO 6272-1 |
Typical values, not a specification. Values for each batch are given on its Certificate of Analysis.
5. Application
| Parameter | Guidance |
|---|---|
| Application method | Two-component spray, on rotating spindles or reciprocators |
| Surface preparation | Mouldings free of release agents and handling contamination; treated polyolefin coated within the validated interval after treatment. ABS and ABS/PC need no treatment, but solvent balance and flash are set against stress cracking at gates and bosses |
| Mixing and pot life | Base and hardener mixed at the ratio stated on the label and used inside the stated pot life; mixed material is timed and discarded at the end of pot life, not thinned and reused |
| Applied film thickness | 15 to 25 microns dry in one or two passes, with an intercoat flash between passes |
| Wet on wet route | Flash 10 minutes, then apply the topcoat wet on wet and cure both layers in a single bake |
| Wet on dry route | Force dry 30 minutes at 70 to 80 degrees C part temperature, then recoat |
| Next coat | Decorative basecoat and topcoat, or Arcplast SF 210 or SF 240 soft-feel topcoat |
Process. Two-component spray, mixed at the stated ratio and used inside the pot life. Applied at 15 to 25 microns dry in one or two passes with an intercoat flash. Either flash 10 minutes and take the topcoat wet on wet into a single bake, or force dry 30 minutes at 70 to 80 degrees C and recoat wet on dry.
6. Storage and handling
Store base and hardener in the original closed containers in a cool, dry place away from direct heat, sunlight and frost, and keep the hardener tightly sealed between uses, since it reacts with atmospheric moisture. Shelf life is stated on the label and Certificate of Analysis; refer to the Safety Data Sheet, issued on request, for handling. Handle and use the product in line with its Safety Data Sheet.
7. Safety and regulatory information
Read the Safety Data Sheet before use. Safety Data Sheets and regulatory declarations are issued by our technical centre against the product and batch supplied, so they are sent on request rather than published. Request a Safety Data Sheet or declaration.
This Technical Data Sheet is published for on-screen reference. The information is given in good faith from laboratory and application experience and describes typical values; it is not a specification and does not replace a trial on your own substrate and line.
