Arcmotive WH 510 Wheel Primer and Basecoat

A primer and basecoat for cast and forged aluminium wheels, wheel covers and hub caps, applied over a chromate-free pretreatment. It provides adhesion to the aluminium, the corrosion barrier that limits filiform creep at the rim flange, and the flexibility that governs the stone chip rating of the finished system.

1. Product description

A primer and basecoat for cast and forged aluminium wheels, wheel covers and hub caps, applied over a chromate-free pretreatment. Its job is adhesion to the aluminium and the corrosion barrier that decides how far filiform corrosion travels from a stone strike or a scribe at the rim flange, and it carries the flexibility that governs the stone chip rating of the finished system. It is supplied as a stoving grade for aluminium wheels and as a two-component grade for plastic wheel covers and for lines without a high-temperature oven, in solid, silver and machined-face compatible shades.

2. Features

  • Adhesion to aluminium and a corrosion barrier against filiform creep from a stone strike or scribe
  • Flexible layer that carries the stone chip performance of the finished wheel system
  • Stoving grade for aluminium wheels and two-component grade for plastic wheel covers and lines without a high-temperature oven
  • Solid, silver and machined-face compatible shades

3. Recommended uses

Cast, forged and flow-formed aluminium wheels, and polyamide and ABS wheel covers and hub caps on the two-component grade, overcoated with Arcmotive WH 560 clearcoat.

Substrates. Cast, forged and flow-formed aluminium after degrease, etch and chromate-free conversion coating. Also polyamide and ABS wheel covers, on the two-component grade.

5. Application

ParameterGuidance
Surface preparationAluminium degreased, etched and given a chromate-free conversion coating; pretreatment bath concentration and rinse quality are controlled because they govern filiform corrosion at the rim. Polyamide and ABS covers clean, dry and destaticised.
Application methodElectrostatic spray on aluminium wheels. On polyamide and ABS wheel covers, electrostatic only where a conductive primer or a conductive moulding provides the earth path; otherwise conventional spray.
Dry film thickness25 to 40 micrometres.
Stoving grade, aluminiumFlash off 10 minutes, then stove 20 to 30 minutes at 140 to 160 degrees Celsius metal temperature, measured with a data logger travelling with the wheel.
Two-component grade, plastic coversMix at the stated ratio and use within the pot life, typically 4 hours at 25 degrees Celsius. Flash off 10 minutes, then cure typically 30 minutes at 80 degrees Celsius part temperature.
Next coatOvercoat with Arcmotive WH 560 wheel clearcoat to complete the system, on the schedule agreed for the line.
Safety and handlingRefer to the Safety Data Sheet, issued on request against the product supplied.

Process. Electrostatic spray at 25 to 40 micrometres dry. Aluminium, stoving grade: flash off 10 minutes, stove 20 to 30 minutes at 140 to 160 degrees Celsius metal temperature. Plastic covers, two-component grade: pot life 4 hours at 25 degrees Celsius, flash off 10 minutes, cure 30 minutes at 80 degrees Celsius part temperature.

6. Storage and handling

Store in the original closed containers in a cool, dry, well-ventilated store, out of direct sunlight and away from sources of heat; on the two-component grade keep the hardener tightly sealed because it reacts with atmospheric moisture. Shelf life is stated on the label and the Certificate of Analysis. Handle and use the product in line with its Safety Data Sheet.

7. Safety and regulatory information

Read the Safety Data Sheet before use. Safety Data Sheets and regulatory declarations are issued by our technical centre against the product and batch supplied, so they are sent on request rather than published. Request a Safety Data Sheet or declaration.
