Arcmotive IN 290 Soft-Feel Interior Coating

A two-component soft-feel polyurethane for armrests, grab handles, instrument panel tops and centre console lids. The tactile effect is developed by the film itself, so it is applied at a heavier film build than IN 210 and IN 250.

1. Product description

A two-component soft-feel polyurethane for armrests, grab handles, instrument panel tops and centre console lids, applied at the highest film build in the interior group because the tactile effect is developed by the film itself. It combines a warm, dry, low-slip touch with abrasion resistance at high-contact points. Where the protocol includes extended heat and humidity ageing it is supplied on polycarbonate or polyether polyols rather than polyester, because polyester-based soft-feel films can hydrolyse and turn tacky, and this is the grade to specify when a touch requirement is combined with a full chemical and ageing list.

2. Features

  • Warm, dry, low-slip touch combined with abrasion resistance at high-contact points
  • Heavier film build than IN 210 and IN 250, 35 to 50 micrometres dry
  • On polycarbonate or polyether polyols for heat and humidity ageing, avoiding polyester hydrolysis and tack
  • Applied wet on wet over a matched primer
  • Specified where a touch requirement is combined with a full chemical and ageing list

3. Recommended uses

Armrests, grab handles, instrument panel tops and centre console lids on primed ABS, PC/ABS and polyamide, and on treated polypropylene over an adhesion promoter.

Substrates. ABS, PC/ABS and polyamide, primed. Treated polypropylene over a chlorinated polyolefin adhesion promoter.

TechnologyTwo-component soft-feel polyurethane, on polycarbonate or polyether polyols for heat and humidity ageing protocolsFormulation
Appearance and finishLow-gloss soft-feel film in the agreed colour with a warm, dry, low-slip touchCustomer or supplier protocol, visual and tactile assessment against the approved master panel
Specular gloss at 60 degreesHeld to the approved master panel, typically within plus or minus 1.5 units at 60 degrees, and also read at 85 degrees, as ISO 2813 provides for low-gloss films below 10 units at 60 degreesISO 2813
Dry film thickness35 to 50 micrometresISO 2808
Cross-cut adhesion, initial and after ageingClassification 0 to 1 with no flaking at the cut intersections, held after humidity, thermal cycling and chemical exposureISO 2409
Chemical spot resistance, sun cream, insect repellent, cosmetics and interior cleaners1 to 24 hours contact at 23 to 80 degrees Celsius with no staining, softening, gloss change or adhesion loss, reagent list as set in the customer protocolISO 2812-4
Condensation humidity resistance240 to 504 hours at 40 degrees Celsius with no blistering, softening, tack or adhesion loss, assessed after 1 to 2 hours recoveryISO 6270-2
Abrasion resistance at high-contact pointsTo the cycle count and assessment set in the customer protocolCustomer or supplier protocol

5. Application

ParameterGuidance
MixingMix at the stated ratio, allow the stated induction time and use within 2 to 4 hours at 25 degrees Celsius. Never return mixed material to the pot.
Surface preparationABS, PC/ABS and polyamide, primed with the matched primer. Treated polypropylene over a chlorinated polyolefin adhesion promoter. Parts clean, dry and destaticised.
Application methodSpray, wet on wet over the matched primer.
Dry film thickness35 to 50 micrometres. The touch depends on film build, so build is checked wet and dry.
Flash off and cureFlash off 10 to 15 minutes, then cure typically 40 minutes at 80 degrees Celsius part temperature, measured with a data logger travelling with the part.
Quality controlAssess touch, colour and gloss against the approved master panel, and check adhesion on a witness panel run with the parts.
Safety and handlingRefer to the Safety Data Sheet, issued on request against the product supplied.

Process. Two-component mix, pot life 2 to 4 hours at 25 degrees Celsius. Applied wet on wet over a matched primer at 35 to 50 micrometres dry, flash off 10 to 15 minutes, cure 40 minutes at 80 degrees Celsius part temperature.

6. Storage and handling

Store base and hardener in their original closed containers in a cool, dry, well-ventilated store, out of direct sunlight and away from sources of heat, and keep the hardener tightly sealed because it reacts with atmospheric moisture. Shelf life is stated on the label and the Certificate of Analysis. Handle and use the product in line with its Safety Data Sheet.

7. Safety and regulatory information

Read the Safety Data Sheet before use. Safety Data Sheets and regulatory declarations are issued by our technical centre against the product and batch supplied, so they are sent on request rather than published. Request a Safety Data Sheet or declaration.
