1. Product description
A heat and fluid resistant coating for engine-bay brackets, covers, housings, heat shields and fasteners. It holds adhesion and film integrity under continuous elevated temperature with thermal cycling, and it resists splash contact and the soak times set in the customer protocol from engine oil, coolant, diesel, petrol and brake fluid. It is supplied in two cure routes, a silicone-modified stoving route for steel and aluminium and a lower-temperature two-component route for high-temperature polyamide, in matt black and in signal colours where a part has to be identified during assembly or service.
2. Features
- Silicone-modified stoving route for steel and aluminium, with continuous service typically up to 200 degrees Celsius
- Lower-temperature two-component route for high-temperature polyamide, including glass-filled grades
- Resists splash contact and the soak times set in the customer protocol from engine oil, coolant, diesel, petrol and brake fluid
- Matt black and signal colours for part identification during assembly or service
3. Recommended uses
Engine-bay brackets, covers, housings, heat shields and fasteners in steel, aluminium and high-temperature polyamide.
Substrates. Steel and aluminium after degrease and phosphate or chromate-free pretreatment, on the stoving route. High-temperature polyamide, including glass-filled grades, on the two-component route.
4. Typical properties
| Property | Typical value | Method |
|---|---|---|
| Technology | Silicone-modified stoving coating for metal; two-component coating for high-temperature polyamide | Formulation |
| Appearance and finish | Matt black or signal colour | Customer or supplier protocol, visual assessment against the approved master panel |
| Dry film thickness | 20 to 35 micrometres | ISO 2808 |
| Cross-cut adhesion, initial and after ageing | Classification 0 to 1 with no flaking at the cut intersections, held after humidity, thermal cycling and chemical exposure | ISO 2409 |
| Continuous service temperature | Stoving route typically up to 200 degrees Celsius; two-component route set by the moulding, typically 130 to 150 degrees Celsius | Customer or supplier protocol |
| Temperature cycling | 10 cycles from minus 40 degrees Celsius to 150 degrees Celsius or above on the stoving route, as the protocol sets; on the polyamide route the upper temperature is capped by the moulding's service limit, with adhesion held and no blistering, cracking or flaking | Customer protocol cycle, assessed to ISO 2409 and ISO 4628-1 to ISO 4628-5 |
| Fluid resistance, engine oil, coolant, diesel, petrol and brake fluid | Spot contact within 1 to 24 hours at 23 to 80 degrees Celsius, time and temperature per fluid as set in the customer protocol, with petrol and diesel spotted at 23 degrees Celsius and covered to limit evaporation; no staining, softening or adhesion loss; soak times as set in the customer protocol | ISO 2812-4 for spot contact, ISO 2812-1 for immersion |
| Neutral salt spray, metal parts | 240 to 1000 hours depending on the customer protocol, with corrosion creep from the scribe within 2 millimetres | ISO 9227, assessed to ISO 4628-8 |
| Condensation humidity resistance | 240 to 504 hours at 40 degrees Celsius with no blistering, softening or adhesion loss, assessed after 1 to 2 hours recovery | ISO 6270-2 |
Typical values, not a specification. Values for each batch are given on its Certificate of Analysis.
5. Application
| Parameter | Guidance |
|---|---|
| Surface preparation | Steel and aluminium degreased and given a phosphate or chromate-free pretreatment for the stoving route. High-temperature polyamide, including glass-filled grades, cleaned of release agent and dried of absorbed moisture for the two-component route. |
| Application method | Spray. |
| Dry film thickness | 20 to 35 micrometres. |
| Stoving route, steel and aluminium | Flash off 10 minutes, then cure 20 to 30 minutes at 180 to 200 degrees Celsius metal temperature, measured with a data logger travelling with the part. |
| Two-component route, polyamide | Mix at the stated ratio and use inside the pot life stated for the batch. Flash off 10 minutes, then cure typically 30 minutes at 120 degrees Celsius. |
| Quality control | Check film build and adhesion on a witness panel run with the parts. |
| Safety and handling | Refer to the Safety Data Sheet, issued on request against the product supplied. |
Process. Spray applied at 20 to 35 micrometres dry. Stoving route: flash off 10 minutes, cure 20 to 30 minutes at 180 to 200 degrees Celsius metal temperature, with continuous service typically to 200 degrees Celsius. Two-component route on polyamide: flash off 10 minutes, cure 30 minutes at 120 degrees Celsius, with continuous service set by the moulding rather than the coating, typically 130 to 150 degrees Celsius.
6. Storage and handling
Store in the original closed containers in a cool, dry, well-ventilated store, out of direct sunlight and away from sources of heat; on the two-component route keep the hardener tightly sealed because it reacts with atmospheric moisture. Shelf life is stated on the label and the Certificate of Analysis. Handle and use the product in line with its Safety Data Sheet.
7. Safety and regulatory information
Read the Safety Data Sheet before use. Safety Data Sheets and regulatory declarations are issued by our technical centre against the product and batch supplied, so they are sent on request rather than published. Request a Safety Data Sheet or declaration.
This Technical Data Sheet is published for on-screen reference. The information is given in good faith from laboratory and application experience and describes typical values; it is not a specification and does not replace a trial on your own substrate and line.
