Arcdom SA 220 High Build Mar-Resistant Housing Finish

Arcdom SA 220 is a two component polyurethane finish for visible small appliance housings that are handled, gripped and wiped daily. It is applied at a higher film build than Arcdom SA 110 and is specified where pencil hardness, mar resistance and resistance to household cleaning agents govern the choice.

1. Product description

A two component polyurethane finish for visible small appliance housings that are handled, gripped and wiped daily, including worktop appliance bodies, hood fronts and control housings. It is the higher tier of the small appliance subfamily, applied at a higher film build than SA 110 and specified where pencil hardness, mar resistance and resistance to household cleaning agents govern the choice. Textured and soft feel versions are available on the same binder, so a product family can share one colour across different surface effects.

2. Features

  • Two component polyurethane for force dry lines
  • Higher film build than Arcdom SA 110
  • Gloss, textured and soft feel versions on the same binder, so one colour can run across different surface effects
  • For light gauge steel, aluminium, zinc die castings and primed engineering plastics
  • Full hardness and chemical resistance develop over several days after force dry

3. Recommended uses

Worktop appliance bodies, hood fronts and control housings that are handled, gripped and wiped daily.

Substrates. Light gauge steel, aluminium, zinc die castings, and ABS, PC/ABS and glass filled polyamide with the primer stated on the Technical Data Sheet.

4. Typical properties

PropertyTypical valueMethod
TechnologyTwo component solvent-borne polyurethane, polyol base cured with a polyisocyanate hardenerFormulation
AppearanceGloss, textured or soft feel finish in the agreed colourVisual
Non-volatile content, mixedTypically 45 to 60 per cent by weightISO 3251
Dry film thicknessTypically 40 to 50 µmISO 2808
Specular glossSmooth versions at an agreed level within the range window (matt 15 to 30, semi-gloss 40 to 60 or high gloss 80 to 95 GU at 60°), held within about 5 GU of the retained master panel; textured and soft feel versions judged against the master panel for that effectISO 2813
Pencil hardnessTypically 2H to 3H on smooth versionsASTM D3363
Abrasion and mar resistanceCS-10 wheels, 1 kg load, 1000 cycles: mass loss typically below 50 mg on smooth versions; textured and soft feel versions are assessed against the master panel for that effectISO 7784-2
Resistance to household staining agents16 to 24 hour covered spot test at 23 °C with mustard, tomato, tea, coffee, vinegar, cooking oil and a common surface spray: no blistering, softening or permanent gloss change; a slight residual mark from strongly coloured agents on light colours is acceptedASTM D1308
Cross-cut adhesionClassification 0 to 1, dry and after the exposures in the specification. Cut spacing 1 mm on metal and 2 mm on primed plastic, and 2 mm on either where the total film build including primer exceeds 60 µmISO 2409
Cure confirmationTypically 50 to 100 MEK double rubs without break-through to the substrate, once full cure is reachedASTM D5402

Typical values, not a specification. Values for each batch are given on its Certificate of Analysis.

5. Application

ParameterGuidance
MixingBase and hardener combined at the ratio printed on the labels of the matched pack supplied, and mixed thoroughly before use
Pot lifeAs printed on the label for the batch supplied. Mixed material past its pot life is discarded and not thinned back
Application methodTwo component spray, by hand gun or metering equipment; applied to the part after forming, and not for sheet that is formed after coating
Surface preparationLight gauge steel, aluminium and zinc die castings cleaned, conversion coated and dried off; the adhesion and resistance windows in this sheet assume a pretreated metal surface. ABS, PC/ABS and glass filled polyamide with the nominated primer
Film thicknessTypically 40 to 50 µm dry
Drying scheduleFlash off 10 minutes, then force dried 30 minutes at 60 to 80 °C. On moulded parts the force dry temperature is set below the heat distortion temperature of the moulding, confirmed before the first run
Full cureFull hardness and chemical resistance develop over several days after force dry, and final testing is timed accordingly

Process. Two component spray at the mixing ratio and pot life stated on the Technical Data Sheet, flash off 10 minutes, force dried 30 minutes at 60 to 80 degrees C. Mixed material past its pot life is discarded and not thinned back, and the film reaches full hardness and chemical resistance over several days after force dry.

6. Storage and handling

Store base and hardener in their original tightly closed containers in a cool, dry, covered area away from heat sources and direct sunlight, and reseal the hardener promptly after use to keep out moisture. Shelf life is stated on the label and on the Certificate of Analysis. Handle and use the product in line with its Safety Data Sheet.

7. Safety and regulatory information

Read the Safety Data Sheet before use. Safety Data Sheets and regulatory declarations are issued by our technical centre against the product and batch supplied, so they are sent on request rather than published. Request a Safety Data Sheet or declaration.

This Technical Data Sheet is published for on-screen reference. The information is given in good faith from laboratory and application experience and describes typical values; it is not a specification and does not replace a trial on your own substrate and line.
