Arcdom SA 110 Low Bake Small Appliance Finish

Arcdom SA 110 is a single pack low bake liquid finish for small appliance housings and trims. It is written for force dry ovens and heat sensitive mouldings alongside light gauge metal, so that a moulded housing and a metal trim can be coated with the same grade and match in colour.

1. Product description

A single pack low bake liquid finish for small appliance housings and trims: kettles, mixers, food processors, fans, air purifiers and extractor hood panels. It is the base tier of the small appliance subfamily and exists because these parts often cannot take a stoving schedule, so it is written for force dry ovens and for heat sensitive mouldings alongside light gauge metal. Where one product mixes a moulded housing with a metal trim, both are coated with the same grade so the colour matches across the two substrates.

2. Features

  • Single pack, with no mixing on the line
  • Force dry schedule for plastics and a low stoving schedule for metal only assemblies
  • One grade across moulded and metal parts, so the colour matches across both substrates
  • ABS, PC and PC/ABS with the nominated adhesion promoter; polyolefins only after flame or plasma treatment and a trial

3. Recommended uses

Kettles, mixers, food processors, fans, air purifiers and extractor hood panels, including housings that combine a moulding with a metal trim.

Substrates. Light gauge steel and aluminium, and moulded ABS, PC and PC/ABS with the adhesion promoter stated on the Technical Data Sheet. Polyolefin mouldings need a separate flame or plasma treatment and a trial, since the treatment decays and has to be coated within a stated interval.

4. Typical properties

PropertyTypical valueMethod
TechnologySingle pack solvent-borne low bake finishFormulation
AppearanceLiquid; cured film in the agreed colour and glossVisual
Non-volatile contentTypically 40 to 55 per cent by weightISO 3251
Dry film thicknessTypically 30 to 40 µmISO 2808
Specular glossAgreed level within the range window: matt 15 to 30, semi-gloss 40 to 60 or high gloss 80 to 95 GU at 60°, held within about 5 GU of the retained master panelISO 2813
Colour difference across substratesTypically dE below 1.0 between the moulded and metal parts of one product, with the tolerance, measuring geometry and illuminant agreed in writing before supplyASTM D2244
Cross-cut adhesionClassification 0 to 1 on metal and on promoted plastic, dry and after the exposures in the specification, at 1 mm cut spacing on metal and 2 mm on plastic mouldingsISO 2409
Pencil hardnessTypically H to 2HASTM D3363
Resistance to household staining agents16 to 24 hour covered spot test at 23 °C with mustard, tomato, tea, coffee, vinegar, cooking oil and a common surface spray: no blistering, softening or permanent gloss change; a slight residual mark from strongly coloured agents on light colours is acceptedASTM D1308

Typical values, not a specification. Values for each batch are given on its Certificate of Analysis.

5. Application

ParameterGuidance
Application methodConventional or HVLP spray; applied to the part after forming, and not for sheet that is formed after coating
Surface preparationLight gauge steel and aluminium cleaned, conversion coated and dried off; the adhesion and resistance windows in this sheet assume a pretreated metal surface. ABS, PC and PC/ABS with the nominated adhesion promoter. Polyolefin mouldings flame or plasma treated and coated within the interval confirmed at trial, since the treatment decays
ThinningOnly with the thinner specified for the grade, to the spray viscosity set for the equipment at line trial
Film thicknessTypically 30 to 40 µm dry
Flash off5 to 10 minutes
Drying scheduleForce dried 30 minutes at 70 to 80 °C for plastics, or stoved 20 minutes at 120 °C metal temperature for metal only assemblies
Moulding checkThe force dry temperature is set below the heat distortion temperature of the moulding, confirmed before the first run

Process. Conventional or HVLP spray, flash off 5 to 10 minutes, force dried 30 minutes at 70 to 80 degrees C for plastics or stoved 20 minutes at 120 degrees C metal temperature for metal only assemblies. The force dry temperature is set below the heat distortion temperature of the moulding, which is confirmed before the first run.

6. Storage and handling

Store in the original tightly closed containers in a cool, dry, covered area away from heat sources and direct sunlight, and stir thoroughly before use. Shelf life is stated on the label and on the Certificate of Analysis. Handle and use the product in line with its Safety Data Sheet.

7. Safety and regulatory information

Read the Safety Data Sheet before use. Safety Data Sheets and regulatory declarations are issued by our technical centre against the product and batch supplied, so they are sent on request rather than published. Request a Safety Data Sheet or declaration.

This Technical Data Sheet is published for on-screen reference. The information is given in good faith from laboratory and application experience and describes typical values; it is not a specification and does not replace a trial on your own substrate and line.
