1. Product description

High-build two-pack epoxy for the external surface of buried and exposed steel pipe, girth welds and fittings, applied at the heavy thickness needed to survive backfill and handling. Formulated for adhesion retention under cathodic protection, which is the property that separates a pipe coating from a general industrial epoxy. Available in a plural-component grade for line application and a hand-applied grade for field joints and repairs.

2. Features

  • Adhesion retention under cathodic protection
  • Heavy build of 400 to 700 micrometres per coat
  • Plural-component grade for line application
  • Hand-applied grade for field joints, bends and repairs
  • Fast set, with holiday detection over the full surface

3. Recommended uses

External corrosion protection of buried and exposed steel pipe, bends and fittings, and coating of girth weld field joints and repairs on factory-coated pipe.

Substrates. Blast-cleaned carbon steel pipe, bends and fittings, factory-coated pipe at the cutback for field joint work

4. Typical properties

PropertyTypical valueMethod
TechnologyHigh-build two-pack epoxy, plural-component and hand-applied gradesFormulation
AppearanceSmooth, uniform high-build filmVisual
Volume solids90 to 100 per cent, set by gradeISO 3233-1
Dry film thickness per coat400 to 700 micrometresISO 2808
Adhesion, pull-off from blast-cleaned steelTypically 5 to 15 MPa, cohesive failure preferred over adhesiveISO 4624 or ASTM D4541
Cathodic disbondmentTypically 5 to 12 mm radial disbondment at the potential, temperature and test period named in the pipeline specificationASTM G42 at elevated temperature, or the method named in the pipeline specification
Holiday detectionNo detected discontinuity at a DC voltage setting matched to the specified film thicknessASTM G62
Impact resistanceNo holiday or disbondment at the energy set by the pipeline specification, commonly 3 to 5 JCustomer or supplier protocol, falling weight test named in the pipeline specification
Solvent resistance, fully cured film50 to 100 MEK double rubs without softeningASTM D5402

Typical values, not a specification. Values for each batch are given on its Certificate of Analysis.

5. Application

ParameterGuidance
Application methodPlural-component heated airless spray on the coating line; hand mixed and brush applied at field joints and repairs.
Surface preparationBlast-cleaned to Sa 2.5 to ISO 8501-1 with a grit profile of typically 60 to 100 micrometres Ry5 to ISO 8503-2, matched to the heavy build. Soluble salts held below the tighter limit set for buried service. Factory coating at the cutback abraded for field joint work.
Pipe temperaturePipe heated where the line process requires it and held at least 3 degrees Celsius above the dew point.
Film thickness400 to 700 micrometres dry per coat, verified to ISO 2808, with cutbacks masked so the girth weld stays clean.
InspectionHoliday detection over the full surface at a voltage matched to the build.
Cure and handlingFast set; stacking, slinging and backfill only after the stated cure is reached.

Process. Plural-component heated airless spray on the coating line, or hand mixed and brush applied at field joints. Fast set, holiday detection over the full surface at a voltage matched to the build, cutbacks masked so the girth weld stays clean. Stacking, slinging and backfill only after the stated cure is reached

6. Storage and handling

Store in the original closed containers under cover, dry and out of direct sun, at 5 to 35 degrees Celsius; stir the base to redisperse any settlement before mixing. Shelf life is stated on the label and the Certificate of Analysis. Handle and use the product in line with its Safety Data Sheet.

7. Safety and regulatory information

Read the Safety Data Sheet before use. Safety Data Sheets and regulatory declarations are issued by our technical centre against the product and batch supplied, so they are sent on request rather than published. Request a Safety Data Sheet or declaration.

This Technical Data Sheet is published for on-screen reference. The information is given in good faith from laboratory and application experience and describes typical values; it is not a specification and does not replace a trial on your own substrate and line.
