Arcray OW 510 Flexo Opaque White
An opaque white for a conventional narrow-web flexo station, run through a higher-volume anilox than the colours around it and used as the first-down opacity layer under process work on clear filmic facestock. It is the lower film build of the two Arcray OW whites.

1. Product description
An opaque white for a conventional flexo station, carrying the highest pigment loading and the highest viscosity of any Arcray grade laid from an anilox at a colour station, normally through a higher-volume anilox than the colours around it. White is the most demanding ink on a narrow-web press because opacity and cure pull in opposite directions: titanium dioxide scatters and absorbs the UV that has to reach the base of the film, so cure energy has to rise as film build rises. OW 510 is the lower film build of the two whites and is used as the first-down opacity layer under process work on clear filmic facestock.
2. Features
- First-down opacity layer under process and line colours on clear film
- Highest pigment loading and viscosity of any anilox-fed colour-station grade
- Runs on 6.0 to 12.0 cm³/m² anilox
- Cure energy raised against the colour stations
- Dual cure under mercury-arc or LED at 395 nm
3. Recommended uses
Opaque white backing under process and spot colours on clear PP, PE and PET filmic labels, metallised film and cast or calendered vinyl, where opacity is built at a flexo station rather than by rotary screen.
Substrates. Clear corona-treated or top-coated PP, PE and PET filmic facestock, metallised film, cast and calendered vinyl.
4. Typical properties
| Property | Typical value | Method |
|---|---|---|
| Technology | Dual-cure UV and LED-UV reactive system pigmented with titanium dioxide; no solvent or water | Formulation |
| Appearance | Opaque white viscous liquid | Visual |
| Carrier | None. A reactive system with no solvent or water, converted to film by photopolymerisation; nothing evaporates in print | Formulation |
| Viscosity at 25 °C, cone and plate | 2.0 to 4.0 Pa.s | ISO 2884-1 |
| Fineness of grind | 10 to 20 micrometres | ISO 1524 |
| Density at 20 °C | 1.30 to 1.45 g/cm³ | ISO 2811-1 |
| Cure energy at the web, UV-A | 200 to 400 mJ/cm², raised against the colour stations and rising with film build | In-house, band-calibrated radiometer read at the web |
| Applied film weight, cured | 4 to 7 g/m² | In-house, gravimetric |
| Opacity | Target agreed at enquiry and assessed on the production film at the agreed film weight | Customer or supplier protocol |
| Adhesion of the cured film at 24 hours | No removal in a tape pull over a printed solid | Tape pull over a printed solid, customer or supplier protocol; ISO 2409 cross-cut only where the substrate is stiff enough to be cut cleanly |
Typical values, not a specification. Values for each batch are given on its Certificate of Analysis.
5. Application
| Parameter | Guidance |
|---|---|
| Application method | Narrow-web UV flexo, first down under the colours, on 6.0 to 12.0 cm³/m² anilox |
| Surface preparation | Filmic facestock at 38 mN/m or above at the point of printing, not at the point of manufacture (ISO 8296 on PE and PP; equivalent wetting tension test on PET and vinyl). In-line corona on PP and PE; PET normally top-coated or primed |
| Dilution | Supplied at press viscosity. No solvent or water. Any viscosity adjustment only with a reactive thinner approved by Arctic for the grade, within the limit on the confirmed Technical Data Sheet |
| Film build | Set anilox volume and cure dose together; titanium dioxide scatters and absorbs UV, so energy has to rise as film build rises |
| Cure | Mercury-arc or LED at 395 nm at a higher dose than the colour stations; check the white station separately with a radiometer at the web |
| Next step | Process and line colours printed over the cured white; check tape adhesion at 24 hours and confirm opacity and cure at a press trial on the production film |
Process. Narrow-web UV flexo, 6.0 to 12.0 cm3/m2 anilox, dual cure under mercury-arc or LED at 395 nm, cure energy raised against the colour stations.
6. Storage and handling
Store in the closed, opaque original container in a cool, dry place away from daylight, UV sources and heat, stir before use to take up any settlement, and return press ink to a covered, light-proof container after the run. Shelf life is stated on the label and Certificate of Analysis, and handling information is given in the Safety Data Sheet, issued on request. Handle and use the product in line with its Safety Data Sheet.
7. Safety and regulatory information
Read the Safety Data Sheet before use. Safety Data Sheets and regulatory declarations are issued by our technical centre against the product and batch supplied, so they are sent on request rather than published. Request a Safety Data Sheet or declaration.
This Technical Data Sheet is published for on-screen reference. The information is given in good faith from laboratory and application experience and describes typical values; it is not a specification and does not replace a trial on your own substrate and line.
