Arcray PR 110 Process Extender and Tint Base
An unpigmented extender built on the same resin, monomer and photoinitiator system as the Arcray PR process colours, used to reduce colour strength without shifting cure response or rheology. It is also the base for on-press tinting and for correcting an LC 310 scheme blend that has come out too strong.

1. Product description
An unpigmented extender built on the same resin, monomer and photoinitiator system as the PR process colours, so strength can be reduced without shifting cure response or rheology. It is used to let a process colour down for light tints, for large low-density solids and for controlling ink film density on fine anilox. It is the only PR grade with no pigment, which also makes it the base for on-press tinting and for correcting an LC scheme blend that has come out too strong.
2. Features
- Unpigmented, on the same vehicle as the PR process colours
- Reduces strength without shifting cure response or rheology
- Base for on-press tinting and for correcting a strong LC scheme blend
- Controls ink film density on fine anilox and on large low-density solids
- Dual cure under mercury-arc or LED at 395 nm
3. Recommended uses
Letting down process colours for light tints and large low-density solids, and controlling ink film density on fine anilox. Blended into PR and LC colours at the mixing station for labels on self-adhesive paper, filmic and vinyl facestock.
Substrates. As for the colour it is blended with: self-adhesive paper, corona-treated or top-coated PP, PE and PET filmic facestock, cast and calendered vinyl.
4. Typical properties
| Property | Typical value | Method |
|---|---|---|
| Technology | Dual-cure UV and LED-UV reactive resin, monomer and photoinitiator vehicle, unpigmented; no solvent or water | Formulation |
| Appearance | Clear to translucent, near-colourless liquid, unpigmented | Visual |
| Carrier | None. A reactive system with no solvent or water, converted to film by photopolymerisation; nothing evaporates in print | Formulation |
| Viscosity at 25 °C, cone and plate | 0.6 to 1.8 Pa.s, set to match the PR process colours | ISO 2884-1 |
| Density at 20 °C | 1.02 to 1.12 g/cm³ | ISO 2811-1 |
| Cure energy at the web, UV-A | As for the colour it is blended into: 60 to 140 mJ/cm² under mercury-arc; 40 to 120 mJ/cm² under LED at 395 nm and 8 to 16 W/cm² | In-house, band-calibrated radiometer read at the web |
| Applied film weight, cured | 1.0 to 2.5 g/m², as for the process or line colour it is blended into | In-house, gravimetric |
| Gloss at 60 degrees | 60 to 90 gloss units over gloss filmic stock, measured on the blend | ISO 2813 |
| Adhesion of the cured film at 24 hours | No removal in a tape pull over a printed solid of the blend | Tape pull over a printed solid, customer or supplier protocol; ISO 2409 cross-cut only where the substrate is stiff enough to be cut cleanly |
| Light fastness | Not rated on its own. Letting a colour down lowers the light fastness of the tint against the full-strength colour, so the blend is assessed | ISO 12040, on the blend |
Typical values, not a specification. Values for each batch are given on its Certificate of Analysis.
5. Application
| Parameter | Guidance |
|---|---|
| Application method | Blended by weight into PR process or LC scheme colours at the mixing station before printing, then run on a narrow-web UV flexo press; not intended as a print layer on its own |
| Blending | Record the ratio of extender to colour for every blend and measure the blend by spectrophotometer to ISO 13655 before the run |
| Surface preparation | Filmic facestock at 38 mN/m or above at the point of printing, not at the point of manufacture (ISO 8296 on PE and PP; equivalent wetting tension test on PET and vinyl). In-line corona on PP and PE; PET normally top-coated or primed |
| Dilution | Supplied at press viscosity. No solvent or water. Any viscosity adjustment only with a reactive thinner approved by Arctic for the grade, within the limit on the confirmed Technical Data Sheet |
| Anilox | As for the blend: typically 3.0 to 5.0 cm³/m² for process colours and 4.0 to 6.0 cm³/m² for line and spot colours |
| Cure | Mercury-arc or LED at 395 nm at the dose set for the colour it is blended into, measured with a radiometer at the web |
| Next step | Check tape adhesion and rub resistance at 24 hours; confirm the blend at a press trial on the production stock |
Process. Narrow-web UV flexo, blended into PR and LC colours at the mixing station before printing, dual cure under mercury-arc or LED at 395 nm.
6. Storage and handling
Store in the closed, opaque original container in a cool, dry place away from daylight, UV sources and heat, and return press ink to a covered, light-proof container after the run. Shelf life is stated on the label and Certificate of Analysis, and handling information is given in the Safety Data Sheet, issued on request. Handle and use the product in line with its Safety Data Sheet.
7. Safety and regulatory information
Read the Safety Data Sheet before use. Safety Data Sheets and regulatory declarations are issued by our technical centre against the product and batch supplied, so they are sent on request rather than published. Request a Safety Data Sheet or declaration.
This Technical Data Sheet is published for on-screen reference. The information is given in good faith from laboratory and application experience and describes typical values; it is not a specification and does not replace a trial on your own substrate and line.
