Arccan SF 120 Size Coat and White Base for Sheet-Fed Lines
A size coat and pigmented white base for sheet-fed metal decorating, formulated to release cleanly in the stack and to feed without doubling on the next pass. It is matched to the wicket oven schedule and to the stack height the line runs.

1. Product description
A size coat and pigmented white base for sheet-fed metal decorating, formulated to release cleanly in the stack and to feed without doubling on the next pass. Blocking resistance under stack load and temperature governs how soon a coated sheet can be returned to the press, so the grade is matched to the wicket oven schedule and to the stack height the line actually runs. Intercoat adhesion to the inks and varnishes applied over it is the second controlling property.
2. Features
- Clean release in the stack, with no doubling on the next pass
- Blocking resistance matched to stack load, temperature and oven schedule
- Intercoat adhesion to the inks and varnishes applied over it
- Cure state verified by solvent rub before the following coat
3. Recommended uses
First coats on tinplate, tin-free steel and aluminium sheet in sheet-fed metal decorating, ahead of lithographic inks and the finishing varnish.
Substrates. Tinplate, tin-free steel and aluminium sheet.
4. Typical properties
| Property | Typical value | Method |
|---|---|---|
| Technology | Heat-cured polyester or acrylic size and white base, solvent-borne or waterborne | Formulation |
| Colour and appearance | Clear size coat, or opaque white base to the agreed standard | Visual, against the agreed colour standard |
| Non-volatile content and supply viscosity | Set for the application route and line agreed, and declared on the Certificate of Analysis for the batch supplied | ISO 3251 non-volatile content, ISO 2431 flow cup viscosity |
| Dry film weight | 3 to 7 g/m2 | Gravimetric weight difference on sampled panels, film thickness to ISO 2808 |
| Stoving schedule, sheet in a wicket oven | 10 to 12 min at 185 to 200 degrees C peak metal temperature | Peak metal temperature by thermocouple traced through the oven on a sample panel, customer or supplier protocol |
| Cure state, solvent rub | 50 or more MEK double rubs with no breakthrough to metal | ASTM D5402 |
| Blocking resistance of stacked sheet | No picking, transfer or pressure marking after the declared dwell under the stack load and temperature the line runs | Stacked coated panels under defined load and temperature, customer or supplier protocol |
| Adhesion, cross-cut, including intercoat adhesion to the inks and varnishes | Classification 0 to 1 | ISO 2409 |
| Flexibility, cupping and bending | 6 to 9 mm cupping indentation with no cracking or loss of adhesion | ISO 1520 cupping, ISO 1519 cylindrical mandrel bend |
| Reverse impact, film in tension | 1.0 to 2.5 J with no cracking or loss of adhesion | ASTM D2794 reverse impact, ISO 6272-1 falling weight |
Typical values, not a specification. Values for each batch are given on its Certificate of Analysis.
5. Application
| Parameter | Guidance |
|---|---|
| Application method | Two-roll or three-roll roller coater on sheet. |
| Surface preparation | Clean, dry tinplate, tin-free steel or aluminium sheet as supplied. |
| Dilution | Supplied at application viscosity for the route agreed. Adjust only with the diluent and within the limit stated by Arctic for the grade supplied, and recheck viscosity after any addition. |
| Applied film weight | Typically 3 to 7 g/m2 dry film. |
| Stoving schedule | 10 to 12 min at 185 to 200 degrees C peak metal temperature in a wicket oven. |
| Stacking | Sheets leave the oven hot and must be cool and non-blocking before they are stacked for the next pass. |
| Next step | Confirm cure state by solvent rub, then print and apply the finishing varnish. |
Process. Two-roll or three-roll coater, typically 3 to 7 g/m2 dry film, stoved 10 to 12 min at 185 to 200 degrees C peak metal temperature in a wicket oven. Sheets leave the oven hot and must be cool and non-blocking before the next pass. Cure state is verified by solvent rub before the line runs the following coat.
6. Storage and handling
Store in the original closed containers in a cool, dry, covered area away from heat sources and direct sunlight, protect waterborne grades from frost, and mix to a uniform condition before use. Shelf life is stated on the label and the Certificate of Analysis, and handling guidance is given in the Safety Data Sheet, issued on request. Handle and use the product in line with its Safety Data Sheet.
7. Safety and regulatory information
Read the Safety Data Sheet before use. Safety Data Sheets and regulatory declarations are issued by our technical centre against the product and batch supplied, so they are sent on request rather than published. Request a Safety Data Sheet or declaration.
This Technical Data Sheet is published for on-screen reference. The information is given in good faith from laboratory and application experience and describes typical values; it is not a specification and does not replace a trial on your own substrate and line.
