Arccan CL 250 Roll-On Pilfer-Proof Closure Coating
A high elongation coating for aluminium roll-on pilfer-proof closures, where the thread and tamper band are rolled into the shell at the capping head. The cured film has to move with the aluminium without cracking at the thread crest or at the score bridges.

1. Product description
A high elongation coating for roll-on pilfer-proof closures, where the shell is placed over the bottle finish and the thread and the tamper band are rolled into it at the capping head. The cured film is therefore deformed at the point of application, not in a press shop, and the whole film build has to move with the aluminium without cracking at the thread crest or at the score bridges. It is the most flexible grade in the Arccan CL range.
2. Features
- High elongation grade of the Arccan CL range
- Takes thread rolling at the capping head without cracking
- Film integrity held at the thread crest and at the score bridges
- Coil or sheet applied
- Torque retention and film integrity checked on capped bottles after the process cycle
3. Recommended uses
Roll-on pilfer-proof aluminium closures for bottles, including packs that see a process cycle after capping.
Substrates. Aluminium closure stock in coil and sheet.
4. Typical properties
| Property | Typical value | Method |
|---|---|---|
| Technology | Heat-cured high elongation closure lacquer, binder chosen for the pack, solvent-borne or waterborne | Formulation |
| Appearance | Smooth, uniform cured film free of visible craters. Film integrity is assessed on capped bottles after the process cycle, not by visual inspection | Visual inspection |
| Dry film weight | 5 to 9 g/m2 | Gravimetric weight difference on sampled panels, film thickness to ISO 2808 |
| Cure schedule, coil line | 200 to 215 degrees C peak metal temperature, dwell 20 to 60 s | Peak metal temperature by traced thermocouple, terminology to EN 13523-0 |
| Stoving schedule, sheet in a wicket oven | 10 min at 190 to 200 degrees C peak metal temperature | Peak metal temperature by thermocouple traced through the oven on a sample panel, customer or supplier protocol |
| Cure state, solvent rub | 50 or more MEK double rubs with no breakthrough to metal | ASTM D5402, EN 13523-11 on coil-coated stock |
| Adhesion, cross-cut on flat and formed areas | Classification 0 to 1 | ISO 2409 |
| Flexibility, cupping and bending | 8 to 9 mm cupping indentation with no cracking or loss of adhesion, T-bend rating agreed by grade and gauge | ISO 1520 cupping, ISO 1519 cylindrical mandrel bend, EN 13523-7 T-bend on coil-coated stock |
| Reverse impact, film in tension | 1.0 to 2.5 J with no cracking or loss of adhesion | ASTM D2794 reverse impact, ISO 6272-1 falling weight, EN 13523-5 on coil-coated stock |
| Torque retention and film integrity after capping | No cracking at the thread crest or score bridges, torque held within the limit set by the filler after the process cycle | Customer or supplier protocol, on capped bottles |
Typical values, not a specification. Values for each batch are given on its Certificate of Analysis.
5. Application
| Parameter | Guidance |
|---|---|
| Application method | Coil coater, or roller coater on sheet. |
| Surface preparation | Cleaned and pretreated aluminium closure stock as supplied for coating. |
| Dilution | Supplied at application viscosity for the route agreed. Adjust only with the diluent and within the limit stated by Arctic for the grade supplied, and recheck viscosity after any addition. |
| Applied film weight | Typically 5 to 9 g/m2 dry film. |
| Cure schedule | Coil: 200 to 215 degrees C peak metal temperature with a dwell of 20 to 60 s. Sheet: 10 min at 190 to 200 degrees C peak metal temperature. |
| Next step | Shell drawing, knurling and scoring before capping, wad or liner fitted, then thread and tamper band rolled on the bottle at the capping head. |
Process. Coil or sheet applied, typically 5 to 9 g/m2 dry film, cured at 200 to 215 degrees C peak metal temperature with a dwell of 20 to 60 s on coil, or 10 min at 190 to 200 degrees C peak metal temperature on sheet. Shell drawing, knurling and scoring take place before capping, the wad or liner is fitted, and thread rolling takes place on the bottle. Torque retention and film integrity are checked on capped bottles after the process cycle.
6. Storage and handling
Store in the original closed containers in a cool, dry, covered area away from heat sources and direct sunlight, protect waterborne grades from frost, and mix to a uniform condition before use. Shelf life is stated on the label and the Certificate of Analysis, and handling guidance is given in the Safety Data Sheet, issued on request. Handle and use the product in line with its Safety Data Sheet.
7. Safety and regulatory information
Read the Safety Data Sheet before use. Safety Data Sheets and regulatory declarations are issued by our technical centre against the product and batch supplied, so they are sent on request rather than published. Request a Safety Data Sheet or declaration.
This Technical Data Sheet is published for on-screen reference. The information is given in good faith from laboratory and application experience and describes typical values; it is not a specification and does not replace a trial on your own substrate and line.
