1. Product description

A coil and sheet coating for end stock that is cured flat and then stamped, curled and double seamed, covering plain food and beverage ends and shell stock for closures. The controlling properties are compatibility with the sealing compound lined into the curl and retention of continuity through the seaming operation. It is the base grade of the Arccan EN range and is used where the end carries no score line.

2. Features

  • Base grade of the Arccan EN range, for ends without a score line
  • Compatible with the sealing compound lined into the curl
  • Continuity retained through stamping, curling and double seaming
  • One or two coats on coil or sheet

3. Recommended uses

Plain food and beverage can ends and shell stock for closures, on tinplate, tin-free steel and aluminium.

Substrates. Tinplate and tin-free steel end stock in coil and sheet, and aluminium shell stock.

5. Application

ParameterGuidance
Application methodCoil coater, one or two coats, or roller coater on sheet.
Surface preparationClean tinplate or tin-free steel end stock as supplied; aluminium shell stock cleaned and pretreated for coating.
DilutionSupplied at application viscosity for the route agreed. Adjust only with the diluent and within the limit stated by Arctic for the grade supplied, and recheck viscosity after any addition.
Applied film weightTypically 5 to 9 g/m2 total dry film.
Cure scheduleCoil: 225 to 249 degrees C peak metal temperature depending on substrate, dwell 20 to 45 s. Sheet: 10 to 12 min at 195 to 205 degrees C peak metal temperature.
Next stepBlanking, shell stamping and curling on cured film, then the sealing compound is lined into the curl and dried. Ends are assessed after conversion rather than on the flat coil.

Process. Coil coater, one or two coats at typically 5 to 9 g/m2 total dry film, peak metal temperature 225 to 249 degrees C depending on substrate with a dwell of 20 to 45 s, or sheet applied and stoved 10 to 12 min at 195 to 205 degrees C peak metal temperature. Blanking, shell stamping and curling follow cure, and the sealing compound is then lined into the curl and dried. Ends are assessed after conversion rather than on the flat coil.

6. Storage and handling

Store in the original closed containers in a cool, dry, covered area away from heat sources and direct sunlight, protect waterborne grades from frost, and mix to a uniform condition before use. Shelf life is stated on the label and the Certificate of Analysis, and handling guidance is given in the Safety Data Sheet, issued on request. Handle and use the product in line with its Safety Data Sheet.

7. Safety and regulatory information

Read the Safety Data Sheet before use. Safety Data Sheets and regulatory declarations are issued by our technical centre against the product and batch supplied, so they are sent on request rather than published. Request a Safety Data Sheet or declaration.

This Technical Data Sheet is published for on-screen reference. The information is given in good faith from laboratory and application experience and describes typical values; it is not a specification and does not replace a trial on your own substrate and line.
