Arccan AE 310 Aerosol Can Internal Lacquer

An internal lacquer for three-piece welded tinplate aerosol cans, specified for the concentrate and the propellant acting together under pressure across shelf life. Dimethyl ether is taken as the reference hard case because it can carry water into the pack.

1. Product description

An internal lacquer for three-piece tinplate aerosol cans, specified for the concentrate and the propellant acting together under pressure across shelf life rather than for either alone. Dimethyl ether is treated as the reference hard case because it is partly miscible with water, up to about 35 per cent by weight, and allows water to be carried into the pack, which changes the corrosion mechanism at any defect in the film. The side seam is striped after welding, and adhesion has to survive the necking, flanging and seaming that follow cure.

2. Features

  • Specified for concentrate and propellant together, under pressure
  • Dimethyl ether taken as the reference hard case
  • Induction-cured side-seam stripe applied after welding
  • Adhesion held through necking, flanging and seaming after cure
  • External systems taken from the Arccan EX and Arccan SF ranges

3. Recommended uses

Internal lining of three-piece welded tinplate aerosol bodies, specified against the concentrate, the propellant and the water content of the fill. Monobloc aluminium aerosol bodies are covered by the Arctube range.

Substrates. Three-piece welded tinplate aerosol bodies, with matching external systems taken from the Arccan EX and Arccan SF ranges. Monobloc aluminium bodies are covered by Arctube.

4. Typical properties

PropertyTypical valueMethod
TechnologyHeat-cured internal lacquer, binder chosen for the fill, solvent-borne or waterborneFormulation
AppearanceHomogeneous liquid lacquer; cures to a smooth, uniform internal film free of visible craters. Film defects are assessed by pressurised storage and teardown, not by visual inspectionVisual inspection
Dry film weight5 to 10 g/m2Gravimetric weight difference on sampled panels, film thickness to ISO 2808
Stoving schedule, sheet in a wicket oven10 to 12 min at 185 to 205 degrees C peak metal temperature, schedule set for the grade suppliedPeak metal temperature by thermocouple traced through the oven on a sample panel, customer or supplier protocol
Cure state, solvent rub50 or more MEK double rubs with no breakthrough to metalASTM D5402
Adhesion, cross-cut on flat and formed areasClassification 0 to 1ISO 2409
Flexibility, cupping and bending6 to 9 mm cupping indentation with no cracking or loss of adhesionISO 1520 cupping, ISO 1519 cylindrical mandrel bend
Reverse impact, film in tension1.0 to 2.5 J with no cracking or loss of adhesionASTM D2794 reverse impact, ISO 6272-1 falling weight
Resistance to liquids, pack simulants and process cycleNo blistering, softening or loss of adhesion after the declared immersion condition in the concentrateISO 2812-1 on panels, with the pack result decided on filled, valved and pressurised cans in storage
Resistance under pressurised storageNo blistering, softening, loss of adhesion or seam attack after storage of filled cans at 40 to 50 degrees C for the declared shelf lifePressurised storage of filled cans with teardown of seam, shoulder and base, customer or supplier protocol

Typical values, not a specification. Values for each batch are given on its Certificate of Analysis.

5. Application

ParameterGuidance
Application methodRoller coater on sheet for three-piece construction.
Surface preparationClean, dry tinplate sheet as supplied, with the weld margin kept free of coating.
DilutionSupplied at application viscosity for the route agreed. Adjust only with the diluent and within the limit stated by Arctic for the grade supplied, and recheck viscosity after any addition.
Applied film weightTypically 5 to 10 g/m2 dry film.
Cure scheduleStoved in a wicket oven within 10 to 12 min at 185 to 205 degrees C peak metal temperature, as set for the grade supplied.
Side-seam stripeInduction-cured stripe applied over the weld after welding.
Next stepNecking, flanging and seaming on cured film. Qualification is by pressurised storage of filled cans at 40 to 50 degrees C for the declared shelf life, then teardown of the seam, the shoulder and the base.

Process. Roller applied to sheet at typically 5 to 10 g/m2 dry film for three-piece construction and stoved in a wicket oven, with an induction-cured side-seam stripe after welding. Qualification is by pressurised storage of filled cans at 40 to 50 degrees C for the declared shelf life, followed by teardown and inspection of the seam, the shoulder and the base.

6. Storage and handling

Store in the original closed containers in a cool, dry, covered area away from heat sources and direct sunlight, protect waterborne grades from frost, and mix to a uniform condition before use. Shelf life is stated on the label and the Certificate of Analysis, and handling guidance is given in the Safety Data Sheet, issued on request. Handle and use the product in line with its Safety Data Sheet.

7. Safety and regulatory information

Read the Safety Data Sheet before use. Safety Data Sheets and regulatory declarations are issued by our technical centre against the product and batch supplied, so they are sent on request rather than published. Request a Safety Data Sheet or declaration.

The information is given in good faith from laboratory and application experience and describes typical values; it is not a specification and does not replace a trial on your own substrate and line.
