Arccan IL 450 High-Resistance Retort Lining

A two-coat, high-build internal lining for packs that combine an aggressive fill with a full retort cycle, such as acid fruit, tomato, brine, fish in oil and sulphur-bearing protein. The second coat closes the porosity a single coat leaves at draw radii and at the side seam.

1. Product description

The highest build lining in the range, applied in two coats for packs that combine an aggressive fill with a full retort cycle: acid fruit, tomato, brine, fish in oil and sulphur-bearing protein. The second coat is there to close the porosity that a single coat leaves at draw radii and at the side seam, which is where internal failures normally start. Where the brand owner has specified an exclusion of particular raw materials, that requirement is taken at enquiry and recorded in the documentation issued for the grade, and the pack-specific result is settled by packing trial with the canmaker and the filler rather than by panel testing.

2. Features

  • Two-coat system at the top of the Arccan IL film build
  • Second coat closes porosity at draw radii and at the side seam
  • Intercoat cooling between the two stoving passes
  • Raw material exclusions required by the brand owner taken at enquiry and recorded in the grade documentation
  • Pack-specific result settled by packing trial with the canmaker and the filler

3. Recommended uses

Internal lining of three-piece welded bodies, drawn and redrawn food cans and heavy-duty ends for acid fruit, tomato, brine, fish in oil and sulphur-bearing protein packs processed through a full retort cycle.

Substrates. Tinplate and tin-free steel sheet and coil for three-piece welded bodies, drawn and redrawn food cans, and heavy-duty ends.

4. Typical properties

PropertyTypical valueMethod
TechnologyHeat-cured two-coat internal lacquer, binder chosen for the pack, solvent-borne or waterborneFormulation
AppearanceHomogeneous liquid lacquer; cures to a smooth, uniform film free of visible craters. Porosity left by the first coat is closed by the second, and continuity is assessed by enamel rater on the finished canVisual inspection
Dry film weight9 to 16 g/m2 total over two coatsGravimetric weight difference on sampled panels, film thickness to ISO 2808
Stoving schedule, sheet in a wicket oven10 to 12 min at 200 to 205 degrees C peak metal temperature for each coat, with intercoat coolingPeak metal temperature by thermocouple traced through the oven on a sample panel, customer or supplier protocol
Cure state, solvent rub50 or more MEK double rubs with no breakthrough to metalASTM D5402, EN 13523-11 on coil-coated stock
Adhesion, cross-cut on flat and formed areasClassification 0 to 1ISO 2409
Flexibility, cupping and bending6 to 9 mm cupping indentation with no cracking or loss of adhesion, T-bend rating agreed by grade and gaugeISO 1520 cupping, ISO 1519 cylindrical mandrel bend, EN 13523-7 T-bend on coil-coated stock
Reverse impact, film in tension1.0 to 2.5 J with no cracking or loss of adhesionASTM D2794 reverse impact, ISO 6272-1 falling weight, EN 13523-5 on coil-coated stock
Film continuity of the finished can, electrolytic testMean current typically below 5 to 10 mA at 6.3 V on a 4 s reading, acceptance set by the canmaker for the packEnamel rater on an electrolyte-filled finished can, customer or supplier protocol
Resistance to retort with aggressive fillsNo blistering, softening or loss of adhesion after retort at 121 degrees C for 60 to 90 min on filled and seamed packs, followed by shelf-life hold and teardownISO 2812-1 on panels for screening, with the result decided by packing trial with the canmaker and the filler

Typical values, not a specification. Values for each batch are given on its Certificate of Analysis.

5. Application

ParameterGuidance
Application methodTwo coats by direct roller coater. The stoving schedule published for this grade is for sheet in a wicket oven; where coil application is required, the coil schedule is agreed with Arctic for the line.
Surface preparationClean, dry tinplate or tin-free steel sheet or coil as supplied.
DilutionSupplied at application viscosity for the route agreed. Adjust only with the diluent and within the limit stated by Arctic for the grade supplied, and recheck viscosity after any addition.
Applied film weightTypically 9 to 16 g/m2 total dry film over the two coats, verified by weight difference on sampled panels.
Cure scheduleEach coat 10 to 12 min at 200 to 205 degrees C peak metal temperature in a wicket oven, with intercoat cooling. Confirm cure of the first coat by solvent rub before the second coat is applied.
Next stepWelding, draw and redraw or end stamping on cured film; on welded bodies the side seam is striped after welding. Qualification is a full retort cycle at 121 degrees C for 60 to 90 min on filled and seamed packs, then shelf-life hold and teardown.

Process. Two coats by direct roller coater, typically 9 to 16 g/m2 total dry film, each coat stoved 10 to 12 min at 200 to 205 degrees C peak metal temperature with intercoat cooling. Qualification runs a full retort cycle at 121 degrees C for 60 to 90 min on filled and seamed packs, followed by shelf-life hold and teardown.

6. Storage and handling

Store in the original closed containers in a cool, dry, covered area away from heat sources and direct sunlight, protect waterborne grades from frost, and mix to a uniform condition before use. Shelf life is stated on the label and the Certificate of Analysis, and handling guidance is given in the Safety Data Sheet, issued on request. Handle and use the product in line with its Safety Data Sheet.

7. Safety and regulatory information

Read the Safety Data Sheet before use. Safety Data Sheets and regulatory declarations are issued by our technical centre against the product and batch supplied, so they are sent on request rather than published. Request a Safety Data Sheet or declaration.

This Technical Data Sheet is published for on-screen reference. The information is given in good faith from laboratory and application experience and describes typical values; it is not a specification and does not replace a trial on your own substrate and line.
