1. Product description
A roller-applied internal lining for flat tinplate and tin-free steel stock that is blanked, welded or drawn after cure, covering general food packs and two-piece drawn and redrawn food cans through a standard retort cycle. On a three-piece welded body the lining is completed after welding by a side-seam stripe over the weld, and this grade is supplied with a matching stripe for induction or hot air cure. It sits between the spray lining and the high-resistance grade in both film build and chemical severity.
2. Features
- Sheet or coil applied, with all forming on cured film
- Matching side-seam stripe for induction or hot air cure after welding
- Film build and chemical resistance between Arccan IL 210 and Arccan IL 450
- Coating-free margin held at the weld area on stock for welded bodies
- Raw material exclusions required by the brand owner recorded in the grade documentation
3. Recommended uses
Internal lining of three-piece welded food cans and two-piece drawn and redrawn food cans for general food packs processed through a standard retort cycle.
Substrates. Tinplate and tin-free steel in sheet and coil, including stock destined for three-piece welded bodies and for drawn and redrawn two-piece food cans.
4. Typical properties
| Property | Typical value | Method |
|---|---|---|
| Technology | Heat-cured internal roller-coat lacquer, binder chosen for the pack, solvent-borne or waterborne | Formulation |
| Appearance | Homogeneous liquid lacquer; cures to a smooth, uniform internal film free of visible craters. Continuity is assessed electrically on the formed can, not by visual inspection | Visual inspection |
| Non-volatile content and supply viscosity | Set for the application route and line agreed, and declared on the Certificate of Analysis for the batch supplied | ISO 3251 non-volatile content, ISO 2431 flow cup viscosity |
| Dry film weight | 4 to 9 g/m2 | Gravimetric weight difference on sampled panels, film thickness to ISO 2808 |
| Stoving schedule, sheet in a wicket oven | 10 to 12 min at 195 to 205 degrees C peak metal temperature | Peak metal temperature by thermocouple traced through the oven on a sample panel, customer or supplier protocol |
| Cure schedule, coil line | 232 to 249 degrees C peak metal temperature, dwell 20 to 45 s | Peak metal temperature by traced thermocouple, terminology to EN 13523-0 |
| Cure state, solvent rub | 50 or more MEK double rubs with no breakthrough to metal | ASTM D5402, EN 13523-11 on coil-coated stock |
| Adhesion, cross-cut on flat and formed areas | Classification 0 to 1 | ISO 2409 |
| Flexibility, cupping and bending | 6 to 9 mm cupping indentation with no cracking or loss of adhesion, T-bend rating agreed by grade and gauge | ISO 1520 cupping, ISO 1519 cylindrical mandrel bend, EN 13523-7 T-bend on coil-coated stock |
| Resistance to liquids, pack simulants and process cycle | No blistering, softening or loss of adhesion after the declared immersion or retort condition | ISO 2812-1 on panels, with the pack result decided on filled and seamed packs in a packing trial |
Typical values, not a specification. Values for each batch are given on its Certificate of Analysis.
5. Application
| Parameter | Guidance |
|---|---|
| Application method | Two-roll or three-roll direct roller coater on sheet, or coil coater. |
| Surface preparation | Clean, dry tinplate or tin-free steel as supplied. On stock for welded bodies, hold a coating-free margin at the weld area. |
| Dilution | Supplied at application viscosity for the route agreed. Adjust only with the diluent and within the limit stated by Arctic for the grade supplied, and recheck viscosity after any addition. |
| Applied film weight | Typically 4 to 9 g/m2 dry film, set by roll pressure, roll speed ratio and viscosity and verified by weight difference on sampled panels. |
| Cure schedule | Sheet: 10 to 12 min at 195 to 205 degrees C peak metal temperature in a wicket oven. Coil: 232 to 249 degrees C peak metal temperature with a dwell of 20 to 45 s. |
| Side-seam stripe | On three-piece welded bodies, apply the matching stripe over the weld after welding and cure by induction or hot air. The internal system is not complete until the stripe is cured. |
| Next step | Blanking, welding or draw and redraw on cured film, then qualification by packing trial with the canmaker and the filler. |
Process. Two-roll or three-roll direct roller coater, typically 4 to 9 g/m2 dry film, stoved 10 to 12 min at 195 to 205 degrees C peak metal temperature in a wicket oven, or coil applied at 232 to 249 degrees C peak metal temperature with a dwell of 20 to 45 s. A coating-free margin is held at the weld area on stock for welded bodies. The side-seam stripe is applied after welding and cured by induction or hot air. All forming takes place on cured film.
6. Storage and handling
Store in the original closed containers in a cool, dry, covered area away from heat sources and direct sunlight, protect waterborne grades from frost, and mix to a uniform condition before use. Shelf life is stated on the label and the Certificate of Analysis, and handling guidance is given in the Safety Data Sheet, issued on request. Handle and use the product in line with its Safety Data Sheet.
7. Safety and regulatory information
Read the Safety Data Sheet before use. Safety Data Sheets and regulatory declarations are issued by our technical centre against the product and batch supplied, so they are sent on request rather than published. Request a Safety Data Sheet or declaration.
This Technical Data Sheet is published for on-screen reference. The information is given in good faith from laboratory and application experience and describes typical values; it is not a specification and does not replace a trial on your own substrate and line.
