Arccan IL 210 Spray-Applied Beverage Can Lining
A low film weight internal lining sprayed into two-piece drawn and wall-ironed bodies after forming and washing, then cured in a hot air internal bake oven before necking and flanging. It is set for carbonated soft drink and beer packs that are tunnel pasteurised rather than retorted.

Issue 2026.09
1. Product description
A low film weight internal lining sprayed into two-piece drawn and wall-ironed bodies after the body has been formed and washed, then cured in a hot air oven before necking and flanging. It is directed at carbonated soft drink and beer packs that see tunnel pasteurisation rather than retort, where continuity at the dome radius and neutrality to taste and aroma decide the job. It is the lightest build in the Arccan IL range and the only grade applied to an already-formed body.
2. Features
- Sprayed into the formed body; the one Arccan IL grade not applied to flat stock
- Deposit weighted towards the dome radius, where continuity is decided
- Specified for neutrality to taste and aroma in beer and carbonated soft drink
- Cured film takes necking and flanging after the internal bake
- Raw material exclusions required by the brand owner recorded in the grade documentation
3. Recommended uses
Internal lining of aluminium and tinplate two-piece drawn and wall-ironed cans for beer and carbonated soft drinks that see tunnel pasteurisation. It is not used on flat sheet or on retorted packs.
Substrates. Aluminium and tinplate two-piece drawn and wall-ironed bodies. Tinplate is used rather than tin-free steel on this route because the tin layer carries the body through the ironing dies. Not used on flat sheet.
4. Typical properties
| Property | Typical value | Method |
|---|---|---|
| Technology | Heat-cured internal spray lacquer, binder chosen for the pack, solvent-borne or waterborne | Formulation |
| Appearance | Homogeneous liquid lacquer; cures to a smooth, uniform internal film free of visible craters. Continuity is expressed by the enamel rater reading on the finished can, not by visual inspection | Visual inspection |
| Non-volatile content and supply viscosity | Set for the application route and line agreed, and declared on the Certificate of Analysis for the batch supplied | ISO 3251 non-volatile content, ISO 2431 flow cup viscosity |
| Dry film weight, spray applied | 100 to 170 mg per 330 ml body, with the heavier deposit on the dome | Gravimetric weight difference on sampled bodies |
| Cure schedule, internal bake oven | 60 to 120 s at 195 to 210 degrees C peak metal temperature | Peak metal temperature by thermocouple traced through the oven, customer or supplier protocol |
| Cure state, solvent rub | 50 or more MEK double rubs with no breakthrough to metal | ASTM D5402 |
| Film continuity of the finished can, electrolytic test | Mean current typically below 5 to 10 mA at 6.3 V on a 4 s reading, acceptance set by the canmaker for the pack | Enamel rater on an electrolyte-filled finished can, customer or supplier protocol |
| Adhesion, cross-cut on the wall and dome of the lined body | Classification 0 to 1 | ISO 2409, on sections cut from lined and cured bodies |
| Resistance to liquids, pack simulants and process cycle | No blistering, softening or loss of adhesion after the declared pasteurisation condition | ISO 2812-1 on sections cut from lined and cured bodies, with the pack result decided on filled and seamed packs in a packing trial |
| Sensory and taint assessment | Carried out on the finished pack where the brand owner requires it | DIN 10955 |
Typical values, not a specification. Values for each batch are given on its Certificate of Analysis.
5. Application
| Parameter | Guidance |
|---|---|
| Application method | Airless spray on an indexing or rotary internal spray machine, with gun output, body index time and gun position set for the body size. |
| Surface preparation | Spray into the formed body after it has passed the can washer and dryer. The body must be clean and dry at the gun. |
| Dilution | Supplied at application viscosity for the route agreed. Adjust only with the diluent and within the limit stated by Arctic for the grade supplied, and recheck viscosity after any addition. |
| Applied film weight | Typically 100 to 170 mg dry film per 330 ml body, heavier on the dome radius and thinning towards the open end that will be necked. Verify by weighing sampled bodies. |
| Cure schedule | 60 to 120 s at 195 to 210 degrees C peak metal temperature in a hot air internal bake oven. |
| Next step | Necking and flanging on cured film, then continuity read on the finished can by electrical test rather than on a flat panel. |
Process. Airless spray on an indexing or rotary spray machine, typically 100 to 170 mg dry film per 330 ml body with the heavier deposit placed on the dome. Cured 60 to 120 s at 195 to 210 degrees C peak metal temperature in a hot air internal bake oven. Necking and flanging follow cure, and continuity is read on the finished can by electrical test, not on a flat panel.
6. Storage and handling
Store in the original closed containers in a cool, dry, covered area away from heat sources and direct sunlight, protect waterborne grades from frost, and mix to a uniform condition before use. Shelf life is stated on the label and the Certificate of Analysis, and handling guidance is given in the Safety Data Sheet, issued on request. Handle and use the product in line with its Safety Data Sheet.
7. Safety and regulatory information
Read the Safety Data Sheet before use. Safety Data Sheets and regulatory declarations are issued by our technical centre against the product and batch supplied, so they are sent on request rather than published. Request a Safety Data Sheet or declaration.
This Technical Data Sheet is published for on-screen reference. The information is given in good faith from laboratory and application experience and describes typical values; it is not a specification and does not replace a trial on your own substrate and line.
