Arcstruct PR 220 Zinc Phosphate Barrier Primer
Two-pack epoxy primer pigmented with zinc phosphate and a lamellar extender, giving barrier and inhibitive protection to prepared steel in C2 to C4 atmospheric exposure. It is the general fabrication primer of the Arcstruct range, used where a zinc-rich film is not required or where the specification excludes metallic zinc.

1. Product description
Two-pack epoxy primer pigmented with zinc phosphate and lamellar extender, for C2 to C4 atmospheric exposure where a zinc-rich film is not required, or where the specification excludes metallic zinc. It is the general fabrication primer of the range, easy to recoat and tolerant of shop handling. Chosen when barrier and inhibitive protection are sufficient and the priority is throughput and repairability.
2. Features
- Barrier and inhibitive protection without metallic zinc
- Lamellar extender lengthens the moisture path through the film
- Overcoatable the same working day at 25 degrees Celsius
- Tolerant of shop handling, easy to repair and recoat
- Suits blast-cleaned steel, treated galvanised steel and abraded aluminium
3. Recommended uses
First coat on fabricated structural steel, plant and equipment for C2 to C4 atmospheric exposure where throughput and repairability come first, and on galvanised steel or aluminium ahead of an epoxy intermediate or polyurethane topcoat.
Substrates. Blast-cleaned carbon steel, shop-primed steel, galvanised steel after sweep blast or mordant wash, aluminium after abrasion
4. Typical properties
| Property | Typical value | Method |
|---|---|---|
| Technology | Two-pack solvent-borne epoxy with zinc phosphate and lamellar extender pigmentation | Formulation |
| Finish | Matt, below 35 gloss units at 60 degrees, in the agreed primer shade | ISO 2813 |
| Composition | Two-pack: pigmented epoxy base and curing agent in an organic solvent carrier | Formulation |
| Volume solids | 50 to 70 per cent | ISO 3233-1 |
| Density, mixed | 1.4 to 1.7 g/cm3 | ISO 2811-1 |
| Dry film thickness per coat | 50 to 80 micrometres | ISO 2808 |
| Adhesion, pull-off from blast-cleaned steel | Typically 5 to 15 MPa, cohesive failure preferred over adhesive | ISO 4624 or ASTM D4541 |
| Adhesion, cross-cut | Classification 0 to 1 | ISO 2409 |
| Solvent resistance, fully cured film | 50 to 100 MEK double rubs without softening | ASTM D5402 |
| Neutral salt spray resistance, complete system | 240 to 720 hours, set by the ISO 12944 corrosivity category and durability range, rated for blistering, rusting and undercutting | ISO 9227, rated to ISO 4628-2, -3 and -8 |
Typical values, not a specification. Values for each batch are given on its Certificate of Analysis.
5. Application
| Parameter | Guidance |
|---|---|
| Application method | Airless or conventional spray for the main coat; brush and roller for stripe coats on edges and welds and for touch-up. |
| Surface preparation | Blast-cleaned to Sa 2.5 to ISO 8501-1, with a medium grade profile to ISO 8503-2, typically 40 to 70 micrometres Ry5 with shot or 60 to 100 micrometres Ry5 with grit. On previously exposed steel, soluble salts are sampled to ISO 8502-6, measured to ISO 8502-9 and washed down to typically below 20 to 50 mg per square metre as chloride. Galvanised steel is sweep blasted or mordant washed; aluminium is abraded and degreased. |
| Mixing | Base and curing agent mixed completely at the stated ratio, given the stated induction time and used within the pot life, which shortens as temperature rises. |
| Thinning | Only with the thinner named for the grade, within the limit stated on the label. |
| Film thickness | 50 to 80 micrometres dry per coat, wet film checked with a comb during application and dry film verified to ISO 2808. |
| Conditions and cure | Substrate at least 3 degrees Celsius above the dew point during application and initial cure. Touch dry within a few hours and overcoatable the same working day at 25 degrees Celsius; full chemical cure in 7 to 10 days at 25 degrees Celsius, longer in cold conditions. |
| Next coat | Arcstruct EP 240 MIO Intermediate Coat in a three-coat system, or Arcstruct PU 260 Acrylic Polyurethane Topcoat in a two-coat system, applied within the stated overcoating interval. |
Process. Airless spray, conventional spray or brush and roller for touch-up. Two-pack, mixed at the stated ratio with an induction period. Ambient cure, touch dry in a few hours, overcoatable the same working day at 25 C, full chemical cure in about seven days
6. Storage and handling
Store in the original closed containers under cover, dry and out of direct sun, at 5 to 35 degrees Celsius; stir the base to redisperse any settlement before mixing. Shelf life is stated on the label and the Certificate of Analysis. Handle and use the product in line with its Safety Data Sheet.
7. Safety and regulatory information
Read the Safety Data Sheet before use. Safety Data Sheets and regulatory declarations are issued by our technical centre against the product and batch supplied, so they are sent on request rather than published. Request a Safety Data Sheet or declaration.
