1. Product description

A photoluminescent decorative coating carrying strontium aluminate pigment that absorbs ambient light and re-emits it as a visible glow once the light source is removed, used as a graphic effect on pack. Brightness and decay rise with pigment loading and applied film weight, so it is laid down heavy, normally by screen, and over a white or light ground; the pigment itself absorbs UV and competes with the photoinitiator, so the cure is set for depth at that film build and confirmed on the job. The pigment is moisture sensitive, the coating is not a safety or escape route marking, and afterglow is measured to DIN 67510-1 against a target agreed before the job is specified.

2. Features

  • Strontium aluminate pigment giving a visible afterglow
  • Brightness and decay rise with pigment loading and applied film weight
  • Screen applied at high deposit over a white or light ground
  • Cure set for depth, since the pigment absorbs UV and competes with the photoinitiator
  • Afterglow measured to DIN 67510-1 against a target agreed before the job

3. Recommended uses

Glow in the dark graphic effects on folding cartons, coated papers, labelstock and laminated board. It is a decorative effect and is not specified for safety or escape route marking.

Substrates. Coated folding boxboard, coated papers, labelstock and laminated board

4. Typical properties

PropertyTypical valueMethod
TechnologyUV curing coating with strontium aluminate photoluminescent pigment, effectively solvent freeFormulation
AppearanceThixotropic liquid carrying photoluminescent pigmentVisual
Viscosity at 23 °C, low shear3,000 to 15,000 mPa·s, thixotropic, for screen application; viscosity for coater application confirmed for the jobISO 3219-2 (rotational viscometer at low shear)
Density at 20 °C1.4 to 1.8 g/cm³, reflecting the high density pigmentISO 2811-1
Non-volatile matter96 to 100 per cent, effectively solvent freeASTM D5403 (volatile content of radiation curable materials, cured before heating)
Applied coat weight, dry, screen20 to 60 g/m²In-house, gravimetric
Afterglow luminance and decayExcitation for 5 minutes under the standard source, with the 10 minute and 60 minute luminance values reported against the agreed targetDIN 67510-1
Adhesion of the cured filmNo coating removal at a tape test on the uncut cured film; on laminated board, 4B to 5B by cross-cut and tape, or classification 0 to 1 by cross-cutTape test to customer or supplier protocol on board and paper; ASTM D3359 Method B and ISO 2409 (cross-cut) on laminated board
Rub resistance, cured filmNo transfer or loss of effect after 50 cycles at 2 lb (0.9 kg) loadASTM D5264

Typical values, not a specification. Values for each batch are given on its Certificate of Analysis.

5. Application

ParameterGuidance
Application methodScreen printing unit at high deposit; coater application gives a reduced effect where film build is limited
GroundWhite or light ground beneath the coating
PreparationStir before use to redisperse the dense pigment; keep the container closed when not in use
DilutionSupplied ready for use; not diluted
Applied coat weight, dry20 to 60 g/m² by screen
CureUV cure set for depth at the applied film build, since the pigment absorbs UV; cure confirmed on the job
ApprovalAfterglow target agreed and measured to DIN 67510-1 before the job is specified

Process. Screen printing unit at high deposit, UV cured; coater application at reduced effect where film build is limited

6. Storage and handling

Store in the original tightly closed containers in a cool, dry place, protected from moisture, daylight, UV light sources, heat and frost, since the pigment is moisture sensitive. Shelf life is stated on the label and Certificate of Analysis. Handle and use the product in line with its Safety Data Sheet.

7. Safety and regulatory information

Read the Safety Data Sheet before use. Safety Data Sheets and regulatory declarations are issued by our technical centre against the product and batch supplied, so they are sent on request rather than published. Request a Safety Data Sheet or declaration.

This Technical Data Sheet is published for on-screen reference. The information is given in good faith from laboratory and application experience and describes typical values; it is not a specification and does not replace a trial on your own substrate and line.
