Arcvista MS 220 UV Metallic Gold Coating

A UV curing gold metallic coating on the same leafing pigment platform as Arcvista MS 210, transparent tinted to a gold shade. It is applied at a slightly higher film weight than the silver grade so that it carries the colour without dulling the metal.

1. Product description

A UV curing gold metallic coating built on the same leafing pigment platform as Arcvista MS 210, transparent tinted to a gold shade and applied at a slightly higher film weight to carry the colour without dulling the metal. Shade is assessed on the production substrate, because the board white and any underlying print both read through the metal. Like all leafing metallics it presents a low energy surface, so anything printed, glued, laminated or foiled on top of it is trialled before the sequence is fixed.

2. Features

  • Leafing aluminium pigment with a transparent gold tint
  • Run slightly heavier than the silver grade to carry shade without dulling the metal
  • Shade assessed on the production substrate, since board white and underlying print read through
  • Low energy surface, so printing, gluing, laminating or foiling on top is trialled first

3. Recommended uses

Gold panels, borders and graphic fields on folding cartons, labels and printed board where an in-line metallic is preferred to gold foil.

Substrates. Cast-coated board, high-gloss coated board, coated papers and gloss laminated film

4. Typical properties

PropertyTypical valueMethod
TechnologyUV curing coating with transparent tinted leafing aluminium pigment, effectively solvent freeFormulation
AppearanceGold metallic liquidVisual
Viscosity at 23 °C250 to 1,200 mPa·s, towards the upper end of the windowISO 2884-1 (cone and plate)
Density at 20 °C1.00 to 1.25 g/cm³ISO 2811-1
Non-volatile matter96 to 100 per cent, effectively solvent freeASTM D5403 (volatile content of radiation curable materials, cured before heating)
ShadeMatched visually against the agreed standard on the production substrate, including any underlying printISO 3668
Adhesion of the cured filmNo coating removal at a tape test on the uncut cured film; on film, laminate or rigid sheet, 4B to 5B by cross-cut and tape, or classification 0 to 1 by cross-cut, confirmed on the production substrate, since leafed pigment can lift at the tape testTape test to customer or supplier protocol on board and paper; ASTM D3359 Method B and ISO 2409 (cross-cut) on film, laminate or rigid sheet
Rub resistance, cured filmTarget of no transfer or loss of effect after 50 cycles at 2 lb (0.9 kg) load, confirmed on the production substrate at the job's cure, since the leafed pigment lies at the surfaceASTM D5264
Coefficient of friction, cured film0.25 to 0.55 static and kineticASTM D1894

Typical values, not a specification. Values for each batch are given on its Certificate of Analysis.

5. Application

ParameterGuidance
Application methodCoater or flexo unit with a low line count, high volume anilox, sheetfed or narrow web
PreparationStir gently before use to redisperse the pigment; avoid high shear mixing, which damages the flakes
DilutionSupplied ready for use; not diluted
Applied coat weight, dry5 to 8 g/m², run slightly heavier than Arcvista MS 210 on the same substrate
Shade approvalOn the production substrate over the intended print, since both read through the metal
CureUV cured in line; cure confirmed on the job
Next stepAny printing, gluing, laminating or foiling over the metallic is trialled before the sequence is fixed

Process. Coater or flexo unit with a low line count, high volume anilox, UV cured, sheetfed or narrow web

6. Storage and handling

Store in the original closed containers in a cool, dry place, protected from daylight, UV light sources, heat and frost. Shelf life is stated on the label and Certificate of Analysis. Handle and use the product in line with its Safety Data Sheet.

7. Safety and regulatory information

Read the Safety Data Sheet before use. Safety Data Sheets and regulatory declarations are issued by our technical centre against the product and batch supplied, so they are sent on request rather than published. Request a Safety Data Sheet or declaration.
