Arcvista RF 420 Heavy Relief Coating
A high film build UV relief coating applied by screen to form a raised, tactile pattern that holds its edge after cure. It adds height on the surface where a design would otherwise need an embossing die, but it does not deform the board, so it cannot reproduce a deboss or a structure that runs through the board thickness.

1. Product description
A high film build relief coating applied by screen to create a raised, clearly tactile pattern that holds its edge after cure. It carries the heaviest applied weight in the range and is used where a design would otherwise need an embossing die, with the qualification that it adds height on the surface and does not deform the board, so it cannot reproduce a deboss or a structure that runs through the caliper. Relief height is governed by mesh, deposit and cure, and is agreed as a target on the production substrate before the job is specified.
2. Features
- Raised, tactile pattern that holds its edge after cure
- Heaviest applied weight in the range, 40 to 60 g/m² dry
- Thixotropic, so the deposit holds its edge before cure
- Relief height governed by mesh, deposit and cure, agreed as a target on the production substrate
- Adds surface height only; does not deform the board
3. Recommended uses
Raised tactile patterns, lettering and graphic details on folding cartons, cast-coated and laminated board and rigid coated sheet, in place of embossing where only surface height is needed.
Substrates. Coated folding boxboard, cast-coated board, laminated board and rigid coated sheet
4. Typical properties
| Property | Typical value | Method |
|---|---|---|
| Technology | UV curing high build relief coating, effectively solvent free | Formulation |
| Appearance | Thixotropic liquid for screen application | Visual |
| Viscosity at 23 °C, low shear | 3,000 to 15,000 mPa·s, thixotropic | ISO 3219-2 (rotational viscometer at low shear) |
| Density at 20 °C | 1.00 to 1.15 g/cm³ | ISO 2811-1 |
| Non-volatile matter | 96 to 100 per cent, effectively solvent free | ASTM D5403 (volatile content of radiation curable materials, cured before heating) |
| Applied coat weight, dry | 40 to 60 g/m² | In-house, gravimetric |
| Relief height | Agreed as a target on the production substrate before the job is specified | Customer or supplier protocol |
| Adhesion of the cured film | No coating removal at a tape test on the uncut cured film | Tape test to customer or supplier protocol; cross-cut not applied, since ISO 2409 excludes textured coatings |
| Rub resistance, cured film | No transfer or loss of effect after 50 cycles at 2 lb (0.9 kg) load | ASTM D5264 |
| Coefficient of friction | Assessed on the job, as the relief surface is not continuous | ASTM D1894 |
Typical values, not a specification. Values for each batch are given on its Certificate of Analysis.
5. Application
| Parameter | Guidance |
|---|---|
| Application method | Screen printing unit, flat bed or rotary |
| Screen | Mesh and stencil selected for the target deposit, since mesh, deposit and cure govern relief height |
| Dilution | Supplied ready for use; not diluted |
| Applied coat weight, dry | 40 to 60 g/m² |
| Cure | UV cured with the cure set for depth at full film build, confirmed through the full deposit on the job |
| Approval | Relief height target agreed on the production substrate before the job is specified |
Process. Screen printing unit, flat bed or rotary, UV cured with a cure set for depth at full film build
6. Storage and handling
Store in the original closed containers in a cool, dry place, protected from daylight, UV light sources, heat and frost. Shelf life is stated on the label and Certificate of Analysis. Handle and use the product in line with its Safety Data Sheet.
7. Safety and regulatory information
Read the Safety Data Sheet before use. Safety Data Sheets and regulatory declarations are issued by our technical centre against the product and batch supplied, so they are sent on request rather than published. Request a Safety Data Sheet or declaration.
This Technical Data Sheet is published for on-screen reference. The information is given in good faith from laboratory and application experience and describes typical values; it is not a specification and does not replace a trial on your own substrate and line.
