Arcvista PL 320 Interference Effect Coating
A UV curing interference coating using coated platelet pigment that reflects one colour and transmits its complement, so the field appears to travel in colour as the pack is turned. The effect is strongest over a dark or solid printed ground and weakest over white board.

1. Product description
An interference coating using coated platelet pigment that reflects one colour and transmits its complement, so the field appears to travel in colour as the pack is turned. The effect is strongest over a dark or solid printed ground, which absorbs the transmitted light, and weakest over white board, which scatters it back. Film thickness sets the strength of the travel, so the applied weight is fixed as part of the effect specification rather than left to the coater setting.
2. Features
- Colour travel with viewing angle from coated platelet interference pigment
- Strongest over a dark or solid printed ground, which absorbs the transmitted light
- Applied weight fixed as part of the effect specification, since film thickness sets the strength of the travel
- Coater or flexo application, with screen application where a heavier film is wanted
3. Recommended uses
Colour travel effects on folding cartons, labels and printed board, laid over dark or solid printed areas of the design.
Substrates. Coated folding boxboard, coated papers, labelstock, and printed solids on board or film
4. Typical properties
| Property | Typical value | Method |
|---|---|---|
| Technology | UV curing coating with coated platelet interference pigment, effectively solvent free | Formulation |
| Appearance | Liquid carrying interference pigment; colour travel develops over a dark ground | Visual |
| Viscosity at 23 °C | 250 to 1,200 mPa·s for coater and flexo application, towards the upper end; viscosity for screen application confirmed for the job | ISO 2884-1 (cone and plate) |
| Density at 20 °C | 1.00 to 1.15 g/cm³ | ISO 2811-1 |
| Non-volatile matter | 96 to 100 per cent, effectively solvent free | ASTM D5403 (volatile content of radiation curable materials, cured before heating) |
| Colour travel | Assessed at several viewing angles against the agreed standard over the production ground | Customer or supplier protocol |
| Adhesion of the cured film | No coating removal at a tape test on the uncut cured film; on film, laminate or rigid sheet, 4B to 5B by cross-cut and tape, or classification 0 to 1 by cross-cut | Tape test to customer or supplier protocol on board and paper; ASTM D3359 Method B and ISO 2409 (cross-cut) on film, laminate or rigid sheet |
| Rub resistance, cured film | No transfer or loss of effect after 50 cycles at 2 lb (0.9 kg) load | ASTM D5264 |
| Coefficient of friction, coater applied film | 0.25 to 0.55 static and kinetic | ASTM D1894 |
Typical values, not a specification. Values for each batch are given on its Certificate of Analysis.
5. Application
| Parameter | Guidance |
|---|---|
| Application method | Coater or flexo unit with a high volume anilox; screen application where a heavier film is wanted |
| Ground | Dark or solid printed ground for the full effect; white board gives a weaker effect |
| Preparation | Stir gently before use so the platelet pigment is evenly dispersed; avoid high shear mixing, which can break the platelets |
| Dilution | Supplied ready for use; not diluted |
| Applied coat weight, dry | 3 to 4 g/m² from a coater, fixed as part of the effect specification; screen deposit agreed on trial |
| Cure | UV cured; cure confirmed on the job |
Process. Coater or flexo unit with a high volume anilox, UV cured; screen application where a heavier film is wanted
6. Storage and handling
Store in the original closed containers in a cool, dry place, protected from daylight, UV light sources, heat and frost. Shelf life is stated on the label and Certificate of Analysis. Handle and use the product in line with its Safety Data Sheet.
7. Safety and regulatory information
Read the Safety Data Sheet before use. Safety Data Sheets and regulatory declarations are issued by our technical centre against the product and batch supplied, so they are sent on request rather than published. Request a Safety Data Sheet or declaration.
This Technical Data Sheet is published for on-screen reference. The information is given in good faith from laboratory and application experience and describes typical values; it is not a specification and does not replace a trial on your own substrate and line.
