Arcvista MS 210 UV Metallic Silver Coating
A UV curing silver metallic coating carrying leafing aluminium pigment, used to lay down a metallic field in line rather than by foil. The metallic result depends on the pigment orienting at the coating surface and on the smoothness of the substrate.

1. Product description
A UV curing silver metallic coating carrying leafing aluminium pigment, specified where a metallic field is wanted in line rather than by foil. The pigment has to float and orient at the coating surface to give mirror character, so anilox volume, press speed and cure are set to protect that orientation. It does not reach the specular brilliance of hot foil, cold foil or metallised board, and the result it does give is limited by the substrate, with a smooth cast-coated or gloss laminated surface returning a markedly brighter field than an uncoated or recycled stock.
2. Features
- Leafing aluminium pigment that floats and orients at the coating surface
- In-line metallic field from a coater or flexo unit
- Brighter on smooth cast-coated or gloss laminated surfaces than on uncoated or recycled stock
- Metallic character below that of hot foil, cold foil or metallised board
- Low energy surface, so printing, gluing, laminating or foiling on top is trialled first
3. Recommended uses
Silver panels, borders and graphic fields on folding cartons, labels and printed board where an in-line metallic is preferred to foil or metallised board.
Substrates. Cast-coated board, high-gloss coated board, coated papers, pre-coated recycled liners and gloss laminated film
4. Typical properties
| Property | Typical value | Method |
|---|---|---|
| Technology | UV curing coating with leafing aluminium pigment, effectively solvent free | Formulation |
| Appearance | Silver metallic liquid | Visual |
| Viscosity at 23 °C | 250 to 1,200 mPa·s, towards the upper end of the window | ISO 2884-1 (cone and plate) |
| Density at 20 °C | 1.00 to 1.25 g/cm³ | ISO 2811-1 |
| Non-volatile matter | 96 to 100 per cent, effectively solvent free | ASTM D5403 (volatile content of radiation curable materials, cured before heating) |
| Metallic appearance | Assessed against the agreed standard on the production substrate | Customer or supplier protocol |
| Adhesion of the cured film | No coating removal at a tape test on the uncut cured film; on film, laminate or rigid sheet, 4B to 5B by cross-cut and tape, or classification 0 to 1 by cross-cut, confirmed on the production substrate, since leafed pigment can lift at the tape test | Tape test to customer or supplier protocol on board and paper; ASTM D3359 Method B and ISO 2409 (cross-cut) on film, laminate or rigid sheet |
| Rub resistance, cured film | Target of no transfer or loss of effect after 50 cycles at 2 lb (0.9 kg) load, confirmed on the production substrate at the job's cure, since the leafed pigment lies at the surface | ASTM D5264 |
| Coefficient of friction, cured film | 0.25 to 0.55 static and kinetic | ASTM D1894 |
Typical values, not a specification. Values for each batch are given on its Certificate of Analysis.
5. Application
| Parameter | Guidance |
|---|---|
| Application method | Coater or flexo unit with a low line count, high volume anilox, sheetfed or narrow web |
| Preparation | Stir gently before use to redisperse the pigment; avoid high shear mixing, which damages the flakes |
| Dilution | Supplied ready for use; not diluted |
| Applied coat weight, dry | 4 to 7 g/m² |
| Press settings | Anilox volume, press speed and cure set together to protect pigment orientation, and recorded with the job specification |
| Cure | UV cured in line; cure confirmed on the job |
| Next step | Any printing, gluing, laminating or foiling over the metallic is trialled before the sequence is fixed |
Process. Coater or flexo unit with a low line count, high volume anilox, UV cured, sheetfed or narrow web
6. Storage and handling
Store in the original closed containers in a cool, dry place, protected from daylight, UV light sources, heat and frost. Shelf life is stated on the label and Certificate of Analysis. Handle and use the product in line with its Safety Data Sheet.
7. Safety and regulatory information
Read the Safety Data Sheet before use. Safety Data Sheets and regulatory declarations are issued by our technical centre against the product and batch supplied, so they are sent on request rather than published. Request a Safety Data Sheet or declaration.
This Technical Data Sheet is published for on-screen reference. The information is given in good faith from laboratory and application experience and describes typical values; it is not a specification and does not replace a trial on your own substrate and line.
