Arcvista DO 110 Matt Drip-Off Effect Primer
An oil-based matt effect primer printed from a sheetfed offset unit in the pattern that is to read matt. Its low surface energy film makes the partnering Arcvista DO 120 gloss varnish retract from the printed areas, so the matt pattern forms against a gloss field.
Grade Arcvista DO 110 | Range Decorative and Special Effect Coatings | Technology Oil-based offset effect primer, setting by absorption and oxidation, effectively solvent free

1. Product description
An oil-based matt effect primer printed from a conventional offset inking unit in the pattern that is to read matt. It forms a low surface energy film, well below that of the partnering overprint varnish, so the varnish retracts from the printed areas and the matt pattern defines itself. It sets by absorption and oxidation, so it is specified on absorbent coated stock, and it is supplied only as the matched pair with Arcvista DO 120 and must not be combined with a gloss varnish from another system.
2. Features
- Set film surface energy of 22 to 28 mN/m, well below the surface tension of the partnering varnish
- Printed as a conventional or hybrid ink film from a standard offset inking unit
- Sets by absorption and oxidation on absorbent coated stock
- Tack set below that of the ink set running ahead of it
- Supplied only as a matched pair with Arcvista DO 120
3. Recommended uses
Matt and gloss contrast patterns on folding cartons, covers and other printed work on coated board and coated litho papers, produced in line through the offset units and the coater.
Substrates. Coated folding boxboard, cast-coated board and coated litho papers; gloss laminated and other non-absorbent surfaces on trial only
4. Typical properties
| Property | Typical value | Method |
|---|---|---|
| Technology | Oil-based offset effect primer, setting by absorption and oxidation, effectively solvent free | Formulation |
| Appearance | Offset ink paste | Visual |
| Non-volatile matter | 96 to 100 per cent, effectively solvent free | ISO 3251 |
| Flow, falling rod viscosity | 15 to 60 Pa·s | ISO 12644 (falling rod viscometer) |
| Tack | 5 to 10 at 400 rpm and 30 °C, set below the tack of the ink set running ahead of it | ISO 12634 (rotary tackmeter) |
| Density at 20 °C | 1.00 to 1.15 g/cm³ | ISO 2811-1 |
| Surface energy of the set primer film | 22 to 28 mN/m by contact angle, against 36 mN/m and above on the surrounding printed and open substrate | ISO 19403-2 (contact angle) for the value; test inks as a comparative check only, the 30 mN/m ASTM D2578 solution not wetting the primer film |
| Gloss at 60°, matt field under Arcvista DO 120 | 10 to 25 GU, cross-checked at 85° | ISO 2813 |
Typical values, not a specification. Values for each batch are given on its Certificate of Analysis.
5. Application
| Parameter | Guidance |
|---|---|
| Application method | Sheetfed offset printing unit, run from the last available station ahead of the coater as a conventional or hybrid ink film |
| Substrate | Absorbent coated stock: coated folding boxboard, cast-coated board and coated litho papers; gloss laminated and other non-absorbent surfaces on trial only |
| Dilution | Supplied press ready; no additions without Arctic's advice, since additions can change the surface energy on which the effect depends |
| Film weight | Standard offset ink film, set on trial to give a clean, fully defined matt pattern |
| Setting | Sets by absorption into the coated surface and by oxidation |
| Overcoat | Flooded wet on wet with Arcvista DO 120 from the coater and UV cured in the same pass; not combined with a gloss varnish from another system |
Process. Offset printing unit, sheetfed, as a conventional or hybrid ink film from the last available station ahead of the coater
6. Storage and handling
Store in the original closed containers in a cool, dry place away from direct heat and frost, keeping lids closed between uses to limit skinning. Shelf life is stated on the label and Certificate of Analysis. Handle and use the product in line with its Safety Data Sheet.
7. Safety and regulatory information
Read the Safety Data Sheet before use. Safety Data Sheets and regulatory declarations are issued by our technical centre against the product and batch supplied, so they are sent on request rather than published. Request a Safety Data Sheet or declaration.
This Technical Data Sheet is published for on-screen reference. The information is given in good faith from laboratory and application experience and describes typical values; it is not a specification and does not replace a trial on your own substrate and line.
