Arcfoil OV 130 Overprint and Spacer Varnish for Foil
A varnish applied over print on the foil web to protect the image through converting, die cutting and filling and to set the surface behaviour of the reel. Used as a spacer varnish, it keeps the wraps apart on the reel and prevents print pick-off on unwind.

1. Product description
A varnish applied over print on the foil web to protect the image through converting, die-cutting and filling, and to set the surface behaviour of the reel. It is formulated to control the coefficient of friction, measured to ASTM D1894, and to resist blocking when the coated web is wound warm and stored. Used as a spacer varnish, it keeps the wraps apart on the reel and prevents print pick-off on unwind.
2. Features
- Protects the printed image through converting, die cutting and filling
- Coefficient of friction set to an agreed target, measured to ASTM D1894
- Resists blocking when the coated web is wound warm and stored
- Acts as a spacer varnish to prevent print pick-off on unwind
3. Recommended uses
Overprint protection and winding control on printed aluminium foil, printed foil and paper laminate and lacquered foil, applied inline after printing or on a separate coating pass.
Substrates. Printed aluminium foil 20 to 50 micron; printed foil and paper laminate; lacquered foil.
4. Typical properties
| Property | Typical value | Method |
|---|---|---|
| Technology | Solvent-borne oven-cured overprint varnish with slip and anti-block additives | Formulation |
| Appearance | Clear to slightly hazy liquid | visual |
| Carrier | Organic solvent blend | formulation |
| Non-volatile content | 25 to 40 per cent by weight | ISO 3251 |
| Supply viscosity, ISO flow cup 4 mm at 23 degrees Celsius | 20 to 40 s | ISO 2431 |
| Dry coat weight applied | 3 to 5 g/m2 | in-house, gravimetric |
| Peak metal temperature in the cure oven | 150 to 180 degrees Celsius | in-house, travelling thermocouple on the web |
| Gloss at 60 degrees | 50 to 90 GU, by specification, measured over a solid printed area; over bare or clear-lacquered foil the metal governs the reading | ISO 2813 |
| Kinetic coefficient of friction | 0.20 to 0.50, coated face to coated face, set to the target agreed for the reel | ASTM D1894 |
| Blocking and pick-off | No blocking or print pick-off on unwind under the agreed winding and storage conditions | customer or supplier protocol |
Typical values, not a specification. Values for each batch are given on its Certificate of Analysis.
5. Application
| Parameter | Guidance |
|---|---|
| Application method | Roll coated or gravure applied on a web coating line, oven cured, inline after printing or on a separate pass |
| Substrate and surface preparation | Printed aluminium foil 20 to 50 micron, printed foil and paper laminate or lacquered foil; print fully dried before varnishing |
| Dilution | Supplied ready for use; if reduction is needed, use only the thinner specified by Arctic for the grade and recheck supply viscosity and solids |
| Applied dry coat weight | 3 to 5 g/m2, checked gravimetrically across the full web width |
| Cure | Peak metal temperature 150 to 180 degrees Celsius; under-cure leaves retained solvent that shows as blocking on the reel |
| Specification inputs | State the coefficient of friction target, winding temperature and storage conditions at enquiry; any digitally printed foil needs a press trial on the customer's own press |
Process. Roll coated or gravure applied on a web coating line and oven cured, inline after printing or on a separate coating pass.
6. Storage and handling
Store in the original containers, kept closed, in a cool, dry, covered area out of direct sunlight and within the temperature range given on the label. Shelf life is stated on the label and on the Certificate of Analysis. Handle and use the product in line with its Safety Data Sheet.
7. Safety and regulatory information
Read the Safety Data Sheet before use. Safety Data Sheets and regulatory declarations are issued by our technical centre against the product and batch supplied, so they are sent on request rather than published. Request a Safety Data Sheet or declaration.
This Technical Data Sheet is published for on-screen reference. The information is given in good faith from laboratory and application experience and describes typical values; it is not a specification and does not replace a trial on your own substrate and line.
