1. Product description
A baked protective lacquer for foil packs that are sterilised after filling, typically at 121 to 135 degrees Celsius under steam and pressure. It is formulated to hold adhesion through the retort cycle without blistering, whitening, delamination or loss of seal at the flange. It is the highest performance grade of the PT pair and carries the higher film build of the two.
2. Features
- Holds adhesion through steam retort at 121 to 135 degrees Celsius
- Formulated against blistering, whitening and delamination after the retort cycle
- Higher film build than PT 150
- Cured at high peak metal temperature
- Qualified on the customer's own retort cycle
3. Recommended uses
Retort trays and pouched foil components on foil and polyamide or polyester laminate, sterilised under steam and pressure after filling.
Substrates. Aluminium foil 40 to 150 micron; foil and polyamide or polyester laminate for retort trays and pouched foil components.
4. Typical properties
| Property | Typical value | Method |
|---|---|---|
| Technology | Solvent-borne thermosetting protective baking lacquer, heat-crosslinked resin binder | Formulation |
| Appearance | Clear to slightly hazy liquid | visual |
| Carrier | Organic solvent blend | formulation |
| Non-volatile content | 35 to 45 per cent by weight | ISO 3251 |
| Supply viscosity, ISO flow cup 4 mm at 23 degrees Celsius | 30 to 60 s | ISO 2431 |
| Dry coat weight applied | 6 to 10 g/m2 | in-house, gravimetric |
| Peak metal temperature in the cure oven | 200 to 220 degrees Celsius | in-house, travelling thermocouple on the web |
| Adhesion of the cured lacquer | Cross-cut classification 0 to 1 on foil of 50 micron and above and on laminate, before and after retort; no removal on tape pull on thinner gauges | ISO 2409; in-house tape pull on thinner gauges |
| Retort resistance | 121 to 135 degrees Celsius, 30 to 60 min under steam and pressure, no blistering, whitening or delamination | in-house |
Typical values, not a specification. Values for each batch are given on its Certificate of Analysis.
5. Application
| Parameter | Guidance |
|---|---|
| Application method | Roll coated on a web coating line, oven cured at high peak metal temperature |
| Substrate and surface preparation | Aluminium foil 40 to 150 micron or foil and polyamide or polyester laminate. Clean, dry, fully annealed foil; confirm the residual rolling oil level on incoming coils and prime with Arcfoil PR 110 where oil level, temper or a laminate face makes direct adhesion unreliable |
| Dilution | Supplied ready for use; if reduction is needed, use only the thinner specified by Arctic for the grade and recheck supply viscosity and solids |
| Applied dry coat weight | 6 to 10 g/m2, checked gravimetrically across the full web width |
| Cure | Peak metal temperature 200 to 220 degrees Celsius, measured with a travelling thermocouple on the web; under-cure leaves the film under-crosslinked and retains solvent, and both show as whitening or blistering in the retort |
| Retort qualification | State cycle time, temperature and overpressure at enquiry; qualify on the full cycle and examine for blistering, whitening, delamination and flange seal loss after cooling |
Process. Roll coated on a web coating line and oven cured at high peak metal temperature; the pack is retorted after filling, and cycle time, temperature and overpressure must be stated at enquiry.
6. Storage and handling
Store in the original containers, kept closed, in a cool, dry, covered area out of direct sunlight and within the temperature range given on the label. Shelf life is stated on the label and on the Certificate of Analysis. Handle and use the product in line with its Safety Data Sheet.
7. Safety and regulatory information
Read the Safety Data Sheet before use. Safety Data Sheets and regulatory declarations are issued by our technical centre against the product and batch supplied, so they are sent on request rather than published. Request a Safety Data Sheet or declaration.
This Technical Data Sheet is published for on-screen reference. The information is given in good faith from laboratory and application experience and describes typical values; it is not a specification and does not replace a trial on your own substrate and line.
