Arcfoil HS 110 Polyolefin Heat-Seal Lacquer
A heat-seal lacquer for aluminium lidding foil that forms a permanent seal to polypropylene and polyethylene containers. It is the lowest film build grade of the Arcfoil HS family and is set up for filling lines running a moderate jaw temperature.

1. Product description
A heat-seal lacquer for lidding foil that has to seal to polypropylene and polyethylene containers, including cups, pots and injection-moulded trays. It is the lowest film build of the HS grades and is aimed at lines running a moderate jaw temperature where a permanent seal, not a peel, is required. Among its siblings it is the polyolefin grade: it will not seal to polystyrene or to PET, and the container polymer must be confirmed before specification.
2. Features
- Permanent seal to polypropylene and polyethylene cups, pots and injection-moulded trays
- Lower film build than the styrenic and polyester HS grades
- Suited to hard and semi-hard temper foil die cut on the filling line
- Does not seal to polystyrene or PET; the container polymer is confirmed before specification
3. Recommended uses
Foil lids for polypropylene and polyethylene cups, pots and trays sealed on rotary or intermittent cup fillers and tray sealers. Applied to plain foil, foil and paper laminate or foil and PET laminate.
Substrates. Aluminium foil 20 to 50 micron, hard and semi-hard temper where lids are die cut on the filling line; foil and paper laminate; foil and PET laminate.
4. Typical properties
| Property | Typical value | Method |
|---|---|---|
| Technology | Solvent-borne modified polyolefin heat-seal lacquer | Formulation |
| Appearance | Hazy to milky liquid | visual |
| Carrier | Organic solvent blend | formulation |
| Non-volatile content | 20 to 30 per cent by weight | ISO 3251 |
| Supply viscosity, ISO flow cup 4 mm at 23 degrees Celsius | 20 to 40 s | ISO 2431 |
| Dry coat weight applied | 3 to 5 g/m2 | in-house, gravimetric |
| Peak metal temperature in the cure oven | 160 to 190 degrees Celsius | in-house, travelling thermocouple on the web |
| Sealing initiation temperature | 120 to 150 degrees Celsius | seals made to ASTM F2029, strength measured to ASTM F88 |
| Seal strength, web to web | 8 to 14 N per 15 mm, permanent seal, window agreed per pack | ASTM F88 |
| Adhesion of the cured lacquer | No removal on tape pull or after a bend over a mandrel; cross-cut classification 0 to 1 on foil laminate and on foil of 50 micron | in-house tape pull and mandrel bend on thin lidding gauges; ISO 2409 on foil laminate and on foil of 50 micron and above |
Typical values, not a specification. Values for each batch are given on its Certificate of Analysis.
5. Application
| Parameter | Guidance |
|---|---|
| Application method | Smooth roll or gravure on a web coating line, oven cured |
| Substrate and surface preparation | Aluminium foil 20 to 50 micron, hard or semi-hard temper, foil and paper or foil and PET laminate. Clean, dry foil with the residual rolling oil level confirmed on incoming coils; hard and semi-hard foil is degreased rather than fully annealed, so confirm direct adhesion by trial and prime with Arcfoil PR 110 where the temper, the oil level or a laminate face makes it unreliable |
| Dilution | Supplied ready for use; if reduction is needed, use only the thinner specified by Arctic for the grade and recheck supply viscosity and solids |
| Applied dry coat weight | 3 to 5 g/m2, checked gravimetrically across the full web width |
| Cure | Peak metal temperature 160 to 190 degrees Celsius, measured with a travelling thermocouple at line qualification and after any change of web speed |
| Sealing conditions | Jaw 160 to 190 degrees Celsius, 0.2 to 0.4 MPa, dwell 0.5 to 1.5 s, set from a temperature and dwell matrix on the customer's filling line |
| Next step | Die cut lids on the filling line and seal to polypropylene or polyethylene containers only |
Process. Roll coated on a web coating line, smooth roll or gravure, oven cured; sealed on a rotary or intermittent cup filler or tray sealer.
6. Storage and handling
Store in the original containers, kept closed, in a cool, dry, covered area out of direct sunlight and within the temperature range given on the label. Shelf life is stated on the label and on the Certificate of Analysis. Handle and use the product in line with its Safety Data Sheet.
7. Safety and regulatory information
Read the Safety Data Sheet before use. Safety Data Sheets and regulatory declarations are issued by our technical centre against the product and batch supplied, so they are sent on request rather than published. Request a Safety Data Sheet or declaration.
This Technical Data Sheet is published for on-screen reference. The information is given in good faith from laboratory and application experience and describes typical values; it is not a specification and does not replace a trial on your own substrate and line.
