Arccoil PV 550 PVDF Metallic Coil System, Three Coat
A three-coat PVDF coil system of primer, metallic or mica pigmented basecoat and a clear fluoropolymer top layer, for metallic and pearlescent architectural finishes. The clear layer protects the effect pigment and helps hold an even orientation, which a two-coat film would not.

1. Product description
A three-coat PVDF system of primer, metallic or mica pigmented basecoat and a clear fluoropolymer top layer, for metallic and pearlescent architectural finishes where a two-coat film would not protect the effect pigment or hold an even orientation. Total film build is higher than Arccoil PV 510 and, on a conventional two-coater line, the coil has to run twice, which roughly halves effective output. Metallic finishes are directional, so panel orientation has to be fixed on the drawing and carried through fabrication and installation.
2. Features
- Three coats: primer, metallic or mica pigmented basecoat, clear fluoropolymer top layer
- Clear layer protects the effect pigment
- Higher total film build than Arccoil PV 510
- Directional finish: panel orientation is fixed on the drawing and carried through fabrication and installation
- Runs in two passes on a conventional two-coater line
3. Recommended uses
Metallic and pearlescent finishes on architectural cladding, rainscreen and curtain wall. Supplied on primed aluminium strip, and on primed steel strip where the specification allows it.
Substrates. Primed aluminium strip, and primed steel strip where the specification allows it.
4. Typical properties
| Property | Typical value | Method |
|---|---|---|
| Technology | Solvent-borne three-coat PVDF system with a clear fluoropolymer top layer | Formulation |
| Dry film thickness | Primer 5 to 8 microns; basecoat nominally 20 microns, inside the 18 to 25 micron topcoat window; clear coat 10 to 15 microns | EN 13523-1; ASTM D7091 for the magnetic induction or eddy current check on the line |
| Peak metal temperature at oven exit | 232 to 249 degrees Celsius in each oven section | Strip-attached thermocouple or peak metal temperature recorder read on the line; a line measurement, as there is no dedicated published test standard |
| Specular gloss, 60 degrees | 25 to 40 gloss units | ISO 2813, ASTM D523, EN 13523-2 |
| Colour and effect against the approved panel | Tolerance and viewing geometry agreed separately, because a single Delta E does not describe an effect finish | Customer or supplier protocol, agreed on approved panels |
| T-bend flexibility on 0.5 mm strip, no cracking with a tape pull across the bend | 0T to 1T, with the higher total film build of the three-coat system tending toward the 1T end; confirm against the actual forming schedule | EN 13523-7, ASTM D4145 |
| Pencil hardness | HB to F, as the fluoropolymer film is soft by design | EN 13523-4, ASTM D3363 |
| Solvent resistance, methyl ethyl ketone double rubs | 50 to 100 double rubs on the clear coat without breakthrough to the basecoat, used as a cure check on the line; check the first-pass basecoat the same way, without exposure of the primer, before the second pass | EN 13523-11, ASTM D5402 |
| Accelerated ultraviolet exposure, UV-A 340 lamps with condensation | 1000 to 2000 hours, with gloss retention and colour change agreed for the grade; cabinet hours rank systems and do not convert into years in service | EN 13523-10, ISO 16474-3, ASTM G154 |
| Neutral salt spray resistance, finished system | 500 to 1000 hours with creep from the scribe not more than 2 mm and no field blistering, set by the system chemistry and film build | ISO 9227, ASTM B117, EN 13523-8 |
Typical values, not a specification. Values for each batch are given on its Certificate of Analysis.
5. Application
| Parameter | Guidance |
|---|---|
| Application method | Roll coating in two passes on a two-coater line |
| Surface preparation | Strip cleaned, rinsed, chemically pretreated and dried on the line; a clean, correctly weighted conversion coating is required, as no primer recovers a contaminated or under-treated strip |
| First pass | Primer at 5 to 8 microns and basecoat at nominally 20 microns dry, held inside the 18 to 25 micron topcoat window, each oven section run to 232 to 249 degrees Celsius peak metal temperature and quenched |
| Second pass | Clear coat at 10 to 15 microns dry, cured to 232 to 249 degrees Celsius peak metal temperature and quenched |
| Viscosity adjustment | Hold the supply at the agreed viscosity and coater temperature; correct with the supplied thinner only, to the supplied ratio |
| Line output | Running the coil twice roughly halves effective output on a conventional two-coater line |
| Panel orientation | Fix orientation on the drawing and carry it through fabrication and installation, as metallic finishes are directional |
Process. Roll coated in two passes on a two-coater line: primer at five to eight microns and basecoat at nominally twenty microns in the first pass, clear coat at ten to fifteen microns in the second. Each oven section is run to a peak metal temperature of 232 to 249 degrees Celsius and the strip is quenched after each.
6. Storage and handling
Store each component in the original, tightly closed containers in a cool, dry, covered area away from direct sunlight and heat, and stir to a uniform consistency before use. Shelf life is stated on the label and Certificate of Analysis. Handle and use the product in line with its Safety Data Sheet.
7. Safety and regulatory information
Read the Safety Data Sheet before use. Safety Data Sheets and regulatory declarations are issued by our technical centre against the product and batch supplied, so they are sent on request rather than published. Request a Safety Data Sheet or declaration.
This Technical Data Sheet is published for on-screen reference. The information is given in good faith from laboratory and application experience and describes typical values; it is not a specification and does not replace a trial on your own substrate and line.
