Arcshield IN 450 Epoxy Intumescent for Hydrocarbon and Jet Fire

A two-pack epoxy intumescent for structural steel, vessel skirts, pipe racks and blast-exposed structure where the design fire is a hydrocarbon pool fire or a jet fire. It builds much thicker than the acrylic grade, is normally mesh reinforced at jet fire thicknesses and holds its char under the erosive force of a jet flame.

1. Product description

A two-pack epoxy intumescent for structural steel, vessel skirts, pipe racks and blast-exposed structure where the hazard is a hydrocarbon pool fire or a jet fire rather than a cellulosic fire. It builds far thicker than the acrylic grade, is normally reinforced with carbon or glass mesh at the thicknesses used for jet fire, and holds its char under the erosive force of a jet flame. Thickness comes from the loading tables of the tested system, and the applicable fire test regime, hydrocarbon pool fire or jet fire, is stated in the specification because the two give different loadings.

2. Features

  • Two-pack epoxy intumescent for hydrocarbon pool fire and jet fire duty
  • Carbon or glass mesh reinforcement embedded to the tested arrangement
  • Char held under the erosive force of a jet flame
  • Thickness from the loading tables of the tested system for the stated fire regime
  • Durability topcoat in offshore, exposed and weathering positions

3. Recommended uses

Structural steel, vessel skirts, pipe racks and blast-exposed structure on topsides and in exposed positions in oil, gas and process plant. It is not specified for splash zone or immersed steel.

Substrates. Abrasive blast cleaned structural steel over a compatible epoxy or zinc-rich primer, with mesh reinforcement and fixings installed to the tested detail. Offshore, exposed and weathering positions take a durability topcoat over the intumescent. It is a topsides and exposed-structure product and is not specified for splash zone or immersed steel.

5. Application

ParameterGuidance
MethodPlural component or heated single-leg airless spray; trowel application for detail and repair.
Surface preparationAbrasive blast cleaning to Sa 2½ or better (ISO 8501-1), primed with a compatible epoxy or zinc-rich primer.
ReinforcementMesh and fixings installed to the tested detail, with the mesh embedded between passes.
Thickness and recordsThickness recorded per member against the loading table; the system is inspected and documented as a whole rather than coat by coat.
Application conditionsSteel temperature at least 3 °C above dew point (ISO 8502-4) and relative humidity normally 85 per cent or less during application and cure.
TopcoatDurability topcoat over the intumescent in offshore, exposed and weathering positions.

Process. Plural component or heated single-leg airless spray, with trowel application for detail and repair. Mesh is embedded between passes to the tested arrangement, thickness is recorded per member against the loading table, and the system is inspected and documented as a whole rather than coat by coat.

6. Storage and handling

Store base and curing agent in their original closed containers in a dry, covered store, typically between 5 and 35 °C and out of direct sunlight. Shelf life is stated on the label and the Certificate of Analysis. Handle and use the product in line with its Safety Data Sheet.

7. Safety and regulatory information

Read the Safety Data Sheet before use. Safety Data Sheets and regulatory declarations are issued by our technical centre against the product and batch supplied, so they are sent on request rather than published. Request a Safety Data Sheet or declaration.

This Technical Data Sheet is published for on-screen reference. The information is given in good faith from laboratory and application experience and describes typical values; it is not a specification and does not replace a trial on your own substrate and line.
