Arcshield HT 480 Inert Multipolymeric Coating for CUI Service

An inert multipolymeric matrix coating for insulated and cyclic hot service, where corrosion under insulation is the failure mechanism. It is formulated for wet and dry cycling across a wide temperature range and can be applied to steel that is already in service and hot.

1. Product description

An inert multipolymeric matrix coating for insulated and cyclic hot service, where corrosion under insulation is the actual failure mechanism. Water held against the wall by wet insulation during shutdowns, intermittent operation and cycling through the dew point attacks steel that a dry-service silicone would never be asked to resist, so this grade is formulated for wet and dry cycling across a wide temperature range rather than for steady dry heat. It can be applied to steel that is already in service and hot, which removes the shutdown that a conventional coating would require, and it is used on insulated pipework, vessels, reactor skirts and sub-zero to hot transitions within the stated service range.

2. Features

  • Dry heat service typically from minus 45 °C to 650 °C, with wet and dry cycling duty qualified for the CUI class confirmed against the enquiry
  • For carbon steel and austenitic stainless steel under insulation
  • Applied to cold or hot steel within the stated application temperature range, avoiding a shutdown
  • Applied direct to blast-cleaned steel without a separate primer in most schemes
  • Qualification assessed against the CUI classes of ISO 19277

3. Recommended uses

Insulated pipework, vessels, reactor skirts and sub-zero to hot transitions, including austenitic stainless steel under insulation where chloride stress corrosion cracking is the concern.

Substrates. Abrasive blast cleaned carbon steel and austenitic stainless steel, including stainless under insulation where chloride stress corrosion cracking is the concern. Applied over blast-cleaned steel with no separate primer in most schemes, and over prepared aged coating only after adhesion testing.

4. Typical properties

PropertyTypical valueMethod
TechnologyInert multipolymeric matrix coatingFormulation
Service temperatureTypically minus 45 °C to 650 °C in dry heat; wet and dry cycling duty within this range is qualified for the CUI class confirmed against the enquiryASTM D2485 for dry heat; cycling assessed to ISO 19277
Corrosion under insulation qualificationAssessed against classes CUI-1 to CUI-3 according to the service temperature range and cycling regime; the class qualified for the product supplied is confirmed against the enquiryISO 19277

5. Application

ParameterGuidance
MethodAirless spray in one or two coats; brush and roller for detail.
Surface preparationCarbon steel abrasive blast cleaned to Sa 2½ or better (ISO 8501-1); austenitic stainless steel blast cleaned with a non-metallic, iron-free and chloride-free abrasive. Profile typically 50 to 75 µm Rz (ISO 8503-2, ASTM D4417), and soluble salts to the limit set in the specification (ISO 8502-6 with ISO 8502-9).
PrimerNone in most schemes; applied direct to blast-cleaned steel. Over prepared aged coating only after adhesion testing.
Applied film thicknessTypically 100 to 150 µm dry per coat, verified to ISO 2808, with holiday detection where the specification calls for it.
Steel temperatureCold or hot steel within the stated application temperature range, allowing application to plant in service.
Next stepInsulation reinstated once the coating has dried to the state stated on the product data.

Process. Airless spray in one or two coats, brush and roller for detail, applied to cold or hot steel within the stated application temperature range. Thickness is verified to ISO 2808 and holiday detection is used where the specification calls for it. Qualification for this duty is assessed against the CUI classes in ISO 19277.

6. Storage and handling

Store in the original closed containers in a dry, covered store, typically between 5 and 35 °C and out of direct sunlight. Shelf life is stated on the label and the Certificate of Analysis. Handle and use the product in line with its Safety Data Sheet.

7. Safety and regulatory information

Read the Safety Data Sheet before use. Safety Data Sheets and regulatory declarations are issued by our technical centre against the product and batch supplied, so they are sent on request rather than published. Request a Safety Data Sheet or declaration.
