Arcshield TL 410 Novolac Epoxy Chemical-Resistant Lining

A solvent-free epoxy phenol novolac lining with a higher crosslink density than a standard epoxy, giving resistance to solvents, oxygenated fuels, acids and hot produced water, and a higher wet service temperature. Selection is made against the actual medium, concentration, service temperature and any thermal gradient through the wall.

1. Product description

A solvent-free epoxy phenol novolac lining with a higher crosslink density than a standard epoxy, giving resistance to solvents, oxygenated fuels, acids and hot produced water, and a higher wet service temperature. It is specified for chemical storage, process vessels, secondary containment and hot immersion duty where a bisphenol A epoxy would soften or blister. Selection is made against the actual medium and concentration, the service temperature and any thermal gradient through the wall, because a hot wall with a cooler exterior drives blistering that the medium alone would not cause.

2. Features

  • Higher crosslink density than a bisphenol A epoxy lining
  • Resistance to solvents, oxygenated fuels, acids and hot produced water
  • Higher wet service temperature for hot immersion duty
  • Reinforcement mat laid in where the specification calls for it
  • Post-cure at elevated temperature where the service temperature requires it

3. Recommended uses

Chemical storage tanks, process vessels, secondary containment and hot immersion duty on steel, and concrete bunds and floors, where a bisphenol A epoxy would soften or blister.

Substrates. Abrasive blast cleaned carbon steel to Sa 2½ or Sa 3, and concrete bunds and floors after mechanical preparation and moisture testing. Where the medium is oxidising or strongly acidic beyond the novolac window, a reinforced vinyl ester system is specified instead.

4. Typical properties

PropertyTypical valueMethod
TechnologySolvent-free two-pack epoxy phenol novolacFormulation
AppearanceSmooth lining film, shade to the specificationVisual, supplier protocol
Volume solidsTypically 95 to 100 per centISO 3233-1
Dry film thickness per coatTypically 250 to 400 µm, two coats; reinforced systems built to the specificationISO 2808, ISO 19840 for blast-cleaned steel
Pull-off adhesionTypically 5 to 8 MPa on blast-cleaned steel, against an acceptance level commonly set at a minimum of 5 to 7 MPa for immersion linings; on concrete, limited by the cohesive strength of the concreteISO 4624, ASTM D4541 on steel; ASTM D7234 on concrete
ContinuityHigh-voltage spark testing at the voltage set for the total lining thickness above 500 µm; low-voltage wet sponge for films up to 500 µmASTM D5162 on steel, ASTM D4787 on concrete
Resistance to liquidsImmersion in the actual medium and concentration at service temperature, typically 28 to 90 days, followed by adhesion and blistering assessmentISO 2812-1, blistering rated to ISO 4628-2
Thermal gradient exposureOne-side exposure with a temperature difference across the lined wall, where the service has a hot wall and a cooler exteriorASTM C868
Wet service temperatureHigher than a standard epoxy lining; the limit is stated against the medium and the wall temperature gradient at enquiryCustomer or supplier protocol

5. Application

ParameterGuidance
MethodPlural component spray for large areas, roller and brush for detail and repair, in two coats with the reinforcement mat laid in where the specification calls for it.
Surface preparation, steelAbrasive blast cleaning to Sa 2½ or Sa 3 (ISO 8501-1), profile typically 50 to 85 µm Rz (ISO 8503-2, ASTM D4417), soluble salts typically 20 mg/m² or less as chloride (ISO 8502-6 with ISO 8502-9).
Surface preparation, concreteMechanical preparation to sound concrete, with moisture tested before lining (ASTM D4263 or ASTM F2170).
Applied film thicknessTypically 250 to 400 µm dry per coat in two coats, verified to ISO 19840 on steel.
Application conditionsSubstrate temperature at least 3 °C above dew point (ISO 8502-4) and relative humidity normally 85 per cent or less during application and cure. On concrete, apply while the substrate temperature is steady or falling, so that air leaving the pores does not pinhole the film.
Cure and commissioningPost-cure at elevated temperature where the service temperature requires it. Immersion service is not commissioned before full cure is confirmed.
Selection limitWhere the medium is oxidising or strongly acidic beyond the novolac window, a reinforced vinyl ester system is specified instead.

Process. Plural component spray for large areas, roller and brush for detail and repair, applied in two coats with the reinforcement mat laid in where the specification calls for it. Post-cure at elevated temperature is applied where the service temperature requires it, and immersion service is not commissioned before full cure is confirmed.

6. Storage and handling

Store base and curing agent in their original closed containers in a dry, covered store, typically between 5 and 35 °C and out of direct sunlight. Shelf life is stated on the label and the Certificate of Analysis. Handle and use the product in line with its Safety Data Sheet.

7. Safety and regulatory information

Read the Safety Data Sheet before use. Safety Data Sheets and regulatory declarations are issued by our technical centre against the product and batch supplied, so they are sent on request rather than published. Request a Safety Data Sheet or declaration.

This Technical Data Sheet is published for on-screen reference. The information is given in good faith from laboratory and application experience and describes typical values; it is not a specification and does not replace a trial on your own substrate and line.
