1. Product description

An amine-cured, solvent-free epoxy lining for the internal surfaces of fuel and water storage tanks, applied in two coats to a high total build with no solvent retention in the film. Typical service is diesel, gas oil, jet fuel, crude oil, produced water and industrial water storage. A lining for potable water is a separate matter: drinking water contact is a regulated approval held for a specific product under the regime that applies at the point of use, and that status is confirmed against the enquiry rather than assumed from the chemistry.

2. Features

  • Solvent-free, so no solvent is retained in the cured lining
  • High build per coat in a two-coat system
  • For diesel, gas oil, jet fuel, crude oil, produced water and industrial water service
  • Continuity proved by holiday detection and adhesion by pull-off before return to service

3. Recommended uses

Internal lining of storage tanks for diesel, gas oil, jet fuel, crude oil, produced water and industrial water. Potable water contact is a regulated approval held for an individual product, and that status is confirmed against the enquiry.

Substrates. Abrasive blast cleaned carbon steel to Sa 2½ or Sa 3 with a profile to ISO 8503 and soluble salts within the limit set for immersion service. Welds are dressed and sharp edges radiused before priming, because the lining will not hold thickness over an unprepared edge.

4. Typical properties

PropertyTypical valueMethod
TechnologySolvent-free, amine-cured two-pack epoxyFormulation
AppearanceSmooth lining film, shade to the specificationVisual, supplier protocol
Volume solidsTypically 95 to 100 per centISO 3233-1
Pot life, single-leg applicationTypically 20 to 60 min at 20 °C, shorter at higher material temperatureISO 9514
Dry film thickness per coatTypically 250 to 400 µm, two coatsISO 2808, ISO 19840 for blast-cleaned steel
Pull-off adhesionTypically 5 to 8 MPa on blast-cleaned steel, against an acceptance level commonly set at a minimum of 5 to 7 MPa for immersion liningsISO 4624, ASTM D4541
ContinuityHigh-voltage spark testing at the voltage set for the total lining thickness above 500 µm; low-voltage wet sponge for films up to 500 µmASTM D5162
Resistance to liquids and to waterImmersion in the stored medium at service temperature, typically 28 to 90 days, followed by adhesion and blistering assessmentISO 2812-1, ISO 2812-2, blistering rated to ISO 4628-2
Cure before immersionFull cure confirmed against the temperature-dependent schedule on the product data before the tank is filledCustomer or supplier protocol

Typical values, not a specification. Values for each batch are given on its Certificate of Analysis.

5. Application

ParameterGuidance
MethodPlural component or single-leg airless spray at controlled material temperature, with stripe coats to welds, nozzles and internal corners.
Surface preparationAbrasive blast cleaning to Sa 2½ or Sa 3 (ISO 8501-1), profile typically 50 to 85 µm Rz (ISO 8503-2, ASTM D4417), soluble salts typically 20 mg/m² or less as chloride (ISO 8502-6 with ISO 8502-9). Welds dressed and sharp edges radiused before lining.
ThinningNot thinned; application viscosity is controlled by material temperature.
Applied film thicknessTypically 250 to 400 µm dry per coat in two coats, verified to ISO 19840.
Application conditionsSteel temperature at least 3 °C above dew point (ISO 8502-4) and relative humidity normally 85 per cent or less during application and cure.
Overcoating and inspectionSecond coat applied within the maximum overcoating interval. Continuity proved by holiday detection to ASTM D5162 and adhesion by pull-off to ISO 4624 before the tank returns to service.

Process. Plural component or single-leg airless spray at controlled material temperature, with stripe coats to welds, nozzles and internal corners. Each coat is applied within the maximum overcoating interval, and continuity is proved by holiday detection to ASTM D5162 and adhesion by pull-off to ISO 4624 before the tank is returned to service.

6. Storage and handling

Store base and curing agent in their original closed containers in a dry, covered store, typically between 5 and 35 °C and out of direct sunlight. Shelf life is stated on the label and the Certificate of Analysis. Handle and use the product in line with its Safety Data Sheet.

7. Safety and regulatory information

Read the Safety Data Sheet before use. Safety Data Sheets and regulatory declarations are issued by our technical centre against the product and batch supplied, so they are sent on request rather than published. Request a Safety Data Sheet or declaration.

This Technical Data Sheet is published for on-screen reference. The information is given in good faith from laboratory and application experience and describes typical values; it is not a specification and does not replace a trial on your own substrate and line.
