1. Product description
A two-pack epoxy primer heavily pigmented with zinc dust, giving galvanic protection to the steel at coating defects and barrier protection across the film. The epoxy binder is more tolerant of variable application conditions and of long or short overcoating intervals than a silicate binder, which makes it the usual choice for fabrication shops and site work on bridges, transmission structures, process steelwork and tank exteriors. It is the base coat for three-coat and multi-coat systems written for ISO 12944 corrosivity categories C4 and C5 at high or very high durability.
2. Features
- Galvanic protection of blast-cleaned steel at damage and coating defects
- Epoxy binder tolerant of variable application conditions and of short or long overcoating intervals
- Base coat for ISO 12944 C4 and C5 systems at high or very high durability
- Suited to fabrication shop and site application
3. Recommended uses
Primer for bridges, transmission structures, process steelwork and tank exteriors, overcoated with epoxy intermediate coats and a polyurethane or polysiloxane finish.
Substrates. Abrasive blast cleaned carbon steel to Sa 2½ or better with an angular profile to ISO 8503. Not applied over hand or power tool cleaned steel, over hot-dip galvanising or over non-ferrous metal, where a surface-tolerant epoxy or a primer formulated for zinc is used instead.
4. Typical properties
| Property | Typical value | Method |
|---|---|---|
| Technology | Two-pack epoxy binder with zinc dust pigment, solvent-borne | Formulation |
| Appearance | Grey, matt zinc-rich film | Visual, supplier protocol |
| Zinc dust content of the dry film | 80 per cent or more by mass of the non-volatile portion where the specification calls for a zinc-rich primer to ISO 12944-5 | Content declared in the product data, zinc dust pigment to the classes of ISO 3549 |
| Volume solids | Typically 55 to 70 per cent | ISO 3233-1 |
| Density, mixed product | Typically 2.3 to 2.8 kg/L | ISO 2811-1 |
| Dry film thickness per coat | Typically 50 to 80 µm | ISO 2808, ISO 19840 for blast-cleaned steel |
| Surface drying | Typically 0.5 to 2 h at 20 °C, slower at lower temperature | ISO 9117-3 |
| Pull-off adhesion, as part of an atmospheric system | Typically 3 to 8 MPa on blast-cleaned steel | ISO 4624, ASTM D4541 |
| Neutral salt spray, complete system | Typically 720 h for C4 and 1440 h for C5 at high durability, with degradation rated after exposure | ISO 9227 exposure, durations set in ISO 12944-6, rated to ISO 4628-2, ISO 4628-3 and ISO 4628-8 |
Typical values, not a specification. Values for each batch are given on its Certificate of Analysis.
5. Application
| Parameter | Guidance |
|---|---|
| Method | Airless spray at a pump ratio of 45:1 or higher with a 0.017 to 0.021 in tip; brush for stripe coats on edges, welds and bolt heads. Keep the mixed material under continuous agitation to hold the zinc in suspension. |
| Surface preparation | Abrasive blast cleaning to Sa 2½ or better (ISO 8501-1) with an angular profile, typically 50 to 85 µm Rz (ISO 8503-2, ASTM D4417), the medium grade used under the high-build C4 and C5 systems it primes, and soluble salts typically 50 mg/m² or less as chloride (ISO 8502-6 with ISO 8502-9). Not for hand or power tool cleaned steel, hot-dip galvanising or non-ferrous metal. |
| Thinning | Thinner as stated on the product data, added only as needed for the application conditions. |
| Applied film thickness | Typically 50 to 80 µm dry per coat, verified to ISO 19840. |
| Application conditions | Steel temperature at least 3 °C above dew point (ISO 8502-4) and relative humidity normally 85 per cent or less during application and cure. |
| Overcoating | Overcoat after the stated minimum interval once the film is through-dry. Wash zinc corrosion products off weathered films before overcoating. |
Process. Airless spray at a 45:1 or higher pump ratio with a 0.017 to 0.021 in tip, and brush for stripe coats on edges, welds and bolt heads. Continuous agitation is required to keep the zinc in suspension. Overcoat after the stated minimum interval once the film is through-dry, and wash zinc corrosion products off weathered films before overcoating.
6. Storage and handling
Store base and curing agent in their original closed containers in a dry, covered store, typically between 5 and 35 °C and out of direct sunlight. Shelf life is stated on the label and the Certificate of Analysis. Handle and use the product in line with its Safety Data Sheet.
7. Safety and regulatory information
Read the Safety Data Sheet before use. Safety Data Sheets and regulatory declarations are issued by our technical centre against the product and batch supplied, so they are sent on request rather than published. Request a Safety Data Sheet or declaration.
