Arccan CL 140 Crown and Lug Cap Coating System
A matched external and internal coating system for crowns and twist-off lug caps. The internal lacquer beneath the sealing compound is specified for the pack contents and pasteurisation with torque held, and the external build for the stamping, fluting and lug forming that follow cure.

1. Product description
A matched system for crowns and twist-off lug caps, comprising the external decorative build and the internal lacquer that sits beneath the sealing compound. The internal film is specified for the pack contents and for the pasteurisation cycle with torque held on the closure, and the external film is specified for the stamping, fluting and lug forming that follow cure. It is the lower deformation case in the Arccan CL range, because the shell geometry is pressed before capping and the capping head only crimps the skirt or engages the formed lugs.
2. Features
- Matched external decorative build and internal lacquer
- Internal film specified for the pack and the pasteurisation cycle with torque held
- External film takes stamping, fluting and lug forming after cure
- Lower deformation case in the Arccan CL range, with the shell pressed before capping
3. Recommended uses
Crowns and twist-off lug caps made from tinplate and tin-free steel closure stock, for packs pasteurised after capping.
Substrates. Tinplate and tin-free steel closure stock in sheet.
4. Typical properties
| Property | Typical value | Method |
|---|---|---|
| Technology | Heat-cured closure lacquer system, internal binder chosen for the pack, solvent-borne or waterborne | Formulation |
| Appearance | Internal: continuous lacquer film beneath the compound. External: decorative build to the agreed colour standard | Visual inspection |
| Dry film weight | 4 to 8 g/m2 per coat | Gravimetric weight difference on sampled panels, film thickness to ISO 2808 |
| Stoving schedule, sheet in a wicket oven | 10 to 12 min at 190 to 205 degrees C peak metal temperature | Peak metal temperature by thermocouple traced through the oven on a sample panel, customer or supplier protocol |
| Cure state, solvent rub | 50 or more MEK double rubs with no breakthrough to metal | ASTM D5402 |
| Adhesion, cross-cut on flat and formed areas | Classification 0 to 1 | ISO 2409 |
| Flexibility, cupping and bending | 6 to 9 mm cupping indentation with no cracking or loss of adhesion | ISO 1520 cupping, ISO 1519 cylindrical mandrel bend |
| Reverse impact, film in tension | 1.0 to 2.5 J with no cracking or loss of adhesion | ASTM D2794 reverse impact, ISO 6272-1 falling weight |
| Resistance to liquids, pack simulants and process cycle | No blistering, softening or loss of adhesion after the declared pasteurisation condition, assessed on the finished closure | ISO 2812-1 on panels, with the pack result decided on filled and capped packs in a packing trial |
| Torque retention through pasteurisation, twist-off closures | Removal torque held within the limit set by the filler on capped packs after the process cycle; pry-off crowns are assessed for seal integrity on capped packs instead | Customer or supplier protocol |
Typical values, not a specification. Values for each batch are given on its Certificate of Analysis.
5. Application
| Parameter | Guidance |
|---|---|
| Application method | Roller coater on sheet, internal and external coats. |
| Surface preparation | Clean, dry tinplate or tin-free steel closure stock as supplied. |
| Dilution | Supplied at application viscosity for the route agreed. Adjust only with the diluent and within the limit stated by Arctic for the grade supplied, and recheck viscosity after any addition. |
| Applied film weight | Typically 4 to 8 g/m2 dry film per coat. |
| Cure schedule | 10 to 12 min at 190 to 205 degrees C peak metal temperature in a wicket oven for each coat. |
| Next step | Stamping, fluting and lug forming on cured film, then the sealing compound is lined into the formed shell and dried. Assess on the finished closure after capping and after the process cycle. |
Process. Roller coated on sheet, typically 4 to 8 g/m2 dry film per coat, stoved 10 to 12 min at 190 to 205 degrees C peak metal temperature in a wicket oven. Stamping, fluting and lug forming follow cure, and the sealing compound is then lined into the formed shell and dried. Assessment is on the finished closure after capping and after the process cycle.
6. Storage and handling
Store in the original closed containers in a cool, dry, covered area away from heat sources and direct sunlight, protect waterborne grades from frost, and mix to a uniform condition before use. Shelf life is stated on the label and the Certificate of Analysis, and handling guidance is given in the Safety Data Sheet, issued on request. Handle and use the product in line with its Safety Data Sheet.
7. Safety and regulatory information
Read the Safety Data Sheet before use. Safety Data Sheets and regulatory declarations are issued by our technical centre against the product and batch supplied, so they are sent on request rather than published. Request a Safety Data Sheet or declaration.
This Technical Data Sheet is published for on-screen reference. The information is given in good faith from laboratory and application experience and describes typical values; it is not a specification and does not replace a trial on your own substrate and line.
