Arcprime DV 110 Overprint Varnish for Digital Print
A water-based overprint varnish formulated to go over digital ink films rather than offset ones. Co-solvent content and choice are held back so that the wet varnish does not soften, attack or lift a fused digital image, and the resin builds gloss and rub resistance at low coat weight.

1. Product description
A water-based overprint varnish formulated to go over digital ink films rather than over offset ones. Co-solvent content and choice are held back so that the wet varnish does not soften, attack or lift a fused digital image, and surface tension is set low enough to wet a printed surface that is closed and low in energy without cratering or crawling. The resin is chosen to build gloss and rub resistance at low coat weight. A conventional overprint varnish that performs over offset can craze a digital print, which is the reason this grade exists as a separate product.
2. Features
- Restricted co-solvent content, so the wet varnish does not soften, attack or lift a fused digital image
- Surface tension set to wet closed, low energy printed surfaces without cratering or crawling
- Builds gloss and rub resistance at low coat weight
- For liquid electrophotographic, dry-toner and inkjet prints
3. Recommended uses
Overprint varnishing of digitally printed paper, board, label stock and primed film from liquid electrophotographic, dry-toner and inkjet processes. Typical work includes protecting and finishing digitally printed cartons, labels and commercial print on a finishing or converting line.
Substrates. Digitally printed paper, board, label stock and primed film, from liquid electrophotographic, dry-toner and inkjet processes.
4. Typical properties
| Property | Typical value | Method |
|---|---|---|
| Technology | Water-based overprint varnish, polymer dispersion with low co-solvent content | Formulation |
| Appearance | Milky liquid, drying to a clear gloss film | Visual |
| Carrier | Water, with restricted co-solvent content | Formulation |
| Non-volatile matter | 30 to 42 per cent by weight | ISO 3251 |
| Flow time at 23 °C | 30 to 60 s | ISO 2431, ISO flow cup No. 4, 4 mm orifice |
| Density at 23 °C | 1.00 to 1.08 g/cm³ | ISO 2811-1, pycnometer |
| Gloss at 60° | 65 to 88 GU, measured over a defined printed substrate at the stated coat weight | ISO 2813 |
| Dry rub resistance, 200 cycles under a 1.8 kg weight | No visible removal of the digital image | ASTM D5264, Sutherland rub tester |
| Block resistance, 30 min at 50 °C under the specified load | Rating 8 to 10 | ASTM D4946 |
| Behaviour over the digital image | No softening, lifting or crazing of the image when tested over the actual print | Customer or supplier protocol, over the production digital image |
Typical values, not a specification. Values for each batch are given on its Certificate of Analysis.
5. Application
| Parameter | Guidance |
|---|---|
| Application method | Flexographic anilox fed by a chamber doctor blade, inline on a finishing or converting line, or roller coater offline |
| Surface preparation | Give the printed stock the dwell time it will have in production before varnishing; test over the actual digital image, not over an offset proof of the same artwork |
| Dilution | Supplied ready for use. Adjust only with water, within the limit stated on the confirmed Technical Data Sheet |
| Applied dry coat weight | 1.0 to 3.0 g/m², set by anilox volume and cell geometry |
| Drying | Hot air, to complete removal of the water at line speed, keeping the print surface below the temperature at which the toner or ink film softens; cool before stacking or rewinding |
| Inspection | Lifting and crazing usually show within minutes, but edge lift on a heavy solid can take a day to appear, so recheck after 24 hours |
Process. Flexographic anilox fed by a chamber doctor blade, inline on a finishing or converting line, or roller coater offline. Hot-air drying.
6. Storage and handling
Store in the closed original container at ambient temperature, clear of frost and direct sunlight; the product must not be allowed to freeze. Shelf life is stated on the label and Certificate of Analysis, and handling information is given in the Safety Data Sheet, issued on request. Handle and use the product in line with its Safety Data Sheet.
7. Safety and regulatory information
Read the Safety Data Sheet before use. Safety Data Sheets and regulatory declarations are issued by our technical centre against the product and batch supplied, so they are sent on request rather than published. Request a Safety Data Sheet or declaration.
This Technical Data Sheet is published for on-screen reference. The information is given in good faith from laboratory and application experience and describes typical values; it is not a specification and does not replace a trial on your own substrate and line.
