Arcterra EP 260 High-Build Epoxy Surfacer
A sandable high-build epoxy surfacer that carries the bulk of the film in a three-coat system and fills weld texture, grinding marks and blast profile so the topcoat reads evenly. It is formulated to deform under impact rather than fracture, for surfaces exposed to thrown stone.

1. Product description
A sandable high-build epoxy surfacer that carries the bulk of the film in a three-coat system and fills weld texture, grinding marks and blast profile so the topcoat reads evenly. It is formulated to deform under impact rather than fracture, which is what makes it the grade for lower panels, wheel arches, undercarriage areas and any surface in the path of thrown stone. Compared with EP 210 it is chosen for film build, flexibility and sandability rather than for corrosion function, and the two are normally used together rather than as alternatives.
2. Features
- Applied at 80 to 150 µm dry in one or two passes
- Fills weld texture, grinding marks and blast profile
- Flexible build for stone chip zones
- Dry or wet sandable before the topcoat
- Used together with Arcterra EP 210 rather than as an alternative to it
3. Recommended uses
Intermediate coat on lower panels, wheel arches, undercarriage areas and other surfaces in the path of thrown stone, and on visible fabrications where an even topcoat appearance is needed over welded plate.
Substrates. Arcterra EP 210 primed steel. Direct over Arcterra PR 140 only where the specification accepts the reduced anti-corrosive film, and not direct over PR 110, which is too thin to carry the corrosion function of the system on its own.
4. Typical properties
| Property | Typical value | Method |
|---|---|---|
| Technology | Solvent-borne two-pack high-build epoxy surfacer | Formulation |
| Appearance | Matt, sandable surfacer film | Customer or supplier protocol |
| Pot life of mixed material at 25 °C | Typically 2 to 6 h, shortening sharply as temperature rises | ISO 9514 |
| Dry film thickness per coat | 80 to 150 µm, in one or two passes | ISO 2808 |
| Total system dry film thickness | 180 to 320 µm for a primer, surfacer and topcoat build | ISO 2808 |
| Drying and cure | Through-dry in 16 to 24 h at 20 to 25 °C, full properties in 5 to 7 days; or, after an ambient flash-off, force dry at 60 to 80 °C for 20 to 40 min counted from when the part reaches temperature, since a high-build film sent straight into the bay can solvent-pop and heavy plate lags the bay air | ISO 9117-1 for through-dry; full properties and force-dry schedule to customer or supplier protocol |
| Flexibility, cylindrical mandrel bend | No cracking or detachment at a 5 to 10 mm mandrel for the surfacer and topcoat build on sheet | ISO 1519 |
| Multi-impact stone chip resistance | Characteristic value 1 to 2 for a chip-resistant build over primer and surfacer, lower being better | ISO 20567-1 |
| Pull-off adhesion, full primer, surfacer and topcoat build | Typically 5 MPa and above on blast cleaned steel carrying Arcterra EP 210, with failure sought in the coating rather than at the steel interface | ISO 4624 |
Typical values, not a specification. Values for each batch are given on its Certificate of Analysis.
5. Application
| Parameter | Guidance |
|---|---|
| Method | Airless spray in one or two passes with a flash-off between them; substrate held at least 3 °C above dew point through application and flash-off |
| Substrate | Arcterra EP 210 primed steel. Direct over Arcterra PR 140 only where the specification accepts the reduced anti-corrosive film; not direct over Arcterra PR 110. |
| Mixing and thinning | Base and hardener mixed in the ratio stated on the label and stirred mechanically before use. Thin only where needed and only with the thinner specified by Arctic for the grade. |
| Applied film | 80 to 150 µm dry |
| Cure | Ambient at 20 to 25 °C, through-dry in 16 to 24 h; or, after an ambient flash-off, force dry at 60 to 80 °C for 20 to 40 min counted from when the part reaches temperature, since a high-build film sent straight into the bay can solvent-pop and heavy plate lags the bay air |
| Sanding and next coat | Dry or wet sanded where a flatted surface is required; after wet sanding the surface is rinsed and dried fully before Arcterra PU 320 or PU 360 goes on, since moisture under an isocyanate-hardened topcoat causes pinholing and blistering |
| Safety | Handling and personal protection as set out in the Safety Data Sheet, issued by Arctic on request. |
Process. Airless spray at 80 to 150 µm dry, in one or two passes with a flash-off between them. Ambient cure or force dry at 60 to 80 °C, then dry or wet sanded where a flatted surface is required before the topcoat.
6. Storage and handling
Store base and hardener in their original, tightly closed containers in a cool, dry, covered store away from direct heat and sunlight, within the temperature range on the label, and keep hardener containers sealed against moisture. Shelf life is stated on the label and the Certificate of Analysis. Handle and use the product in line with its Safety Data Sheet.
7. Safety and regulatory information
Read the Safety Data Sheet before use. Safety Data Sheets and regulatory declarations are issued by our technical centre against the product and batch supplied, so they are sent on request rather than published. Request a Safety Data Sheet or declaration.
This Technical Data Sheet is published for on-screen reference. The information is given in good faith from laboratory and application experience and describes typical values; it is not a specification and does not replace a trial on your own substrate and line.
