Arcterra DT 450 High-Build Direct-to-Metal Polyurethane
An aliphatic polyurethane direct-to-metal finish at higher film build than Arcterra DT 410, for attachments and fabrications in full sun that must hold colour and gloss alongside the machine. It reaches a build closer to a primer and topcoat system with a single product and a single bay visit.

1. Product description
An aliphatic polyurethane direct-to-metal finish at higher film build than DT 410, for attachments and fabrications that stay in full sun and are expected to hold colour and gloss alongside the machine. It is applied in two passes with a short flash-off to reach a build closer to that of a primer and topcoat system while keeping a single product and a single bay visit. It is the grade to specify where a single coat route is needed but the part is on show, and DT 410 is the grade where cost, throughput and milder exposure dominate.
2. Features
- Aliphatic polyurethane for colour and gloss retention in full sun
- Applied at 80 to 120 µm dry, in one pass or two with a short flash-off
- Single product and single bay visit
- Also used as a single coat repair and touch-in finish
3. Recommended uses
Attachments and visible fabrications that need a single coat route but stay in full sun, and repair and touch-in on parts already in the fleet colour. Arcterra DT 410 is the alternative where cost, throughput and milder exposure dominate.
Substrates. Degreased and mechanically abraded or blast cleaned steel. Also used as a single coat repair and touch-in finish on parts already in the fleet colour.
4. Typical properties
| Property | Typical value | Method |
|---|---|---|
| Technology | Solvent-borne two-pack aliphatic polyurethane direct-to-metal finish with aliphatic isocyanate hardener | Formulation |
| Colour | Fleet colours matched from a customer sample or colour standard; tolerance agreed at approval | ISO 3668 visual comparison; instrumental to ISO/CIE 11664-4 where agreed |
| Dry film thickness | 80 to 120 µm, in one pass or two passes with a short flash-off | ISO 2808 |
| Pot life of mixed material at 25 °C | Typically 2 to 6 h, shortening sharply as temperature rises | ISO 9514 |
| Drying and cure | Through-dry in 16 to 24 h at 20 to 25 °C, full properties in 5 to 7 days; or, after an ambient flash-off, force dry at 60 to 80 °C for 20 to 40 min counted from when the part reaches temperature, since a high-build film sent straight into the bay can solvent-pop and heavy plate lags the bay air | ISO 9117-1 for through-dry; full properties and force-dry schedule to customer or supplier protocol |
| Cross-cut adhesion | Class 0 to 1 on degreased and abraded or blast cleaned steel | ISO 2409 |
| Accelerated weathering, gloss retention | Typically specified to retain 60 per cent or more of initial gloss after 1000 h xenon arc exposure | ISO 16474-2 for exposure, ISO 2813 for gloss, ISO 4628-6 for chalking |
| Multi-impact stone chip resistance | A higher, that is poorer, characteristic value expected than for a primer, surfacer and topcoat build; a lower value is the better result | ISO 20567-1 |
Typical values, not a specification. Values for each batch are given on its Certificate of Analysis.
5. Application
| Parameter | Guidance |
|---|---|
| Method | Airless or air-assisted airless spray; substrate held at least 3 °C above dew point through application and flash-off |
| Surface preparation | Degreased and mechanically abraded or blast cleaned steel; for touch-in, sound fleet-colour coating cleaned and abraded |
| Mixing and thinning | Base and hardener mixed in the ratio stated on the label and stirred mechanically before use. Thin only where needed and only with the thinner specified by Arctic for the grade. |
| Applied film | 80 to 120 µm dry, in one pass or two with a short flash-off |
| Cure | Ambient at 20 to 25 °C, through-dry in 16 to 24 h; or, after an ambient flash-off, force dry at 60 to 80 °C for 20 to 40 min counted from when the part reaches temperature, since a high-build film sent straight into the bay can solvent-pop and heavy plate lags the bay air |
| Safety | Handling and personal protection as set out in the Safety Data Sheet, issued by Arctic on request. |
Process. Airless or air-assisted airless spray at 80 to 120 µm dry, in one pass or in two passes with a short flash-off between them. Ambient cure or force dry at 60 to 80 °C. Supplied-air respiratory protection and trained operators for isocyanate-hardened materials.
6. Storage and handling
Store base and hardener in their original, tightly closed containers in a cool, dry, covered store away from direct heat and sunlight, within the temperature range on the label, and keep hardener containers sealed against moisture. Shelf life is stated on the label and the Certificate of Analysis. Handle and use the product in line with its Safety Data Sheet.
7. Safety and regulatory information
Read the Safety Data Sheet before use. Safety Data Sheets and regulatory declarations are issued by our technical centre against the product and batch supplied, so they are sent on request rather than published. Request a Safety Data Sheet or declaration.
This Technical Data Sheet is published for on-screen reference. The information is given in good faith from laboratory and application experience and describes typical values; it is not a specification and does not replace a trial on your own substrate and line.
