Arcweb PS 330 UV High-Build Durable Overprint Varnish
A high-build UV varnish for durable labels whose print has to resist abrasion, water and common cleaning chemicals over the exposure and service period the customer specifies. It is applied at a heavier film weight by rotary screen or high-volume anilox.

1. Product description
A high-build UV varnish for durable label work where the print has to resist abrasion, water and common cleaning chemicals over the exposure and service period the customer specifies. It is applied at a heavier film weight, usually by rotary screen or a high-volume anilox, and gives the toughest surface in the subfamily. Where a published durability protocol such as BS 5609 Section 3 has to be satisfied, the converter runs that qualification on their own face stock, ink set and adhesive, because the result is a property of the whole construction and not of the varnish alone.
2. Features
- Heavier film build than PS 110 and PS 220, up to 12 g/m² by rotary screen, for abrasion and chemical resistance
- Resists water and common cleaning chemicals over the exposure the customer specifies
- Applied by rotary screen or high-volume anilox UV flexo
- Supplied for mercury or UV LED curing, matched to the lamp specified
- Durability qualified on the converter's full construction of face stock, ink set and adhesive
3. Recommended uses
Durable pressure-sensitive labels on synthetic PP and PET face stock and heavyweight coated paper for chemical, industrial and household cleaning product containers. Where a published durability protocol applies, the converter qualifies the complete construction, since the result depends on the whole label and not on the varnish alone.
Substrates. Synthetic filmic face stock, primarily PP and PET, and heavyweight coated paper
4. Typical properties
| Property | Typical value | Method |
|---|---|---|
| Technology | High-build UV-curing acrylate, free-radical cure, no water carrier | Formulation |
| Appearance | Clear liquid curing to a clear gloss film | Visual |
| Non-volatile content | 98 to 100 per cent by weight | ASTM D5403, Test Method A (volatile content of radiation-curable material, cured film) |
| Supply viscosity at 25 °C | 500 to 900 mPa.s, rotational | ISO 2884-1 |
| Gloss at 60°, on coated label paper or filmic face stock | 80 to 92 GU | ISO 2813 |
| Rub and scuff resistance | 400 to 500 cycles under a 2 lb, 0.91 kg, weight without pick or print removal | ASTM D5264 |
| Water and chemical resistance | No softening, lifting or print removal after exposure to water and the cleaning chemicals named by the customer, for the agreed period | Customer or supplier protocol |
| Block resistance, rewound reel and stacked sheet | No picking or transfer after 16 h at 40 °C under 10 kPa | ISO 4622 |
| Adhesion over the printed ink, tape test | No removal of coating or ink on filmic face stock; on paper face stock any failure is fibre tear in the paper, not separation at the ink or varnish | ASTM F2252 |
| Cure state at the die | Tack-free, with no softening or film removal at the solvent rub count agreed with the customer | ASTM D5402 |
Typical values, not a specification. Values for each batch are given on its Certificate of Analysis.
5. Application
| Parameter | Guidance |
|---|---|
| Application method | Rotary screen, or UV flexo with a high-volume anilox, narrow-web |
| Surface preparation | Corona treat PP and PET face stock in line at the time of coating and confirm wetting tension before the run |
| Dilution | Supplied ready for use; do not dilute |
| Applied dry coat weight | 6 to 12 g/m² by rotary screen, the route for the full durable build; 2.0 to 2.5 g/m² by UV flexo with a high-volume anilox, at the top of the flexo window |
| Curing | Mercury or UV LED lamps with enough output to cure the heavier film through its full depth at line speed. State the lamp type, and for UV LED the peak wavelength, when ordering, because the photoinitiator package is matched to the lamp; confirm surface cure at the die on the lamp in use. |
| Die-cutting | The heavier film raises the load the die has to cut through; set cut depth and strip tension on the coated stock |
| Qualification | Durability to any published protocol is qualified by the converter on the face stock, ink set and adhesive in use |
Process. Rotary screen or high-volume anilox UV flexo, narrow-web; mercury or UV LED curing
6. Storage and handling
Store in the original closed, opaque container at 5 to 25 °C, away from direct sunlight and UV light sources, with the lid kept closed between uses. Shelf life is stated on the label and Certificate of Analysis. Handle and use the product in line with its Safety Data Sheet.
7. Safety and regulatory information
Read the Safety Data Sheet before use. Safety Data Sheets and regulatory declarations are issued by our technical centre against the product and batch supplied, so they are sent on request rather than published. Request a Safety Data Sheet or declaration.
This Technical Data Sheet is published for on-screen reference. The information is given in good faith from laboratory and application experience and describes typical values; it is not a specification and does not replace a trial on your own substrate and line.
